Don't Speak- you Might be on to something

As long as there are humans there will always be idiots.

Don’t speak

I find it frustrating that you cannot use certain words. When these words are censored, the reader fills in the gaps- we’re not that daft. Take for instance the “Nig”. Oh I had written it but had to pull it. But I didn't write it to insult anyone. It was not in an offensive context. I just wrote it. Does that make me racist? No. Not in the least. So why the fuss? I’ll tell you:

It’s because uptight prudes that can’t take action for themselves.

That’s right…if it bothers you, stop reading.

It’s not a complicated concept really. Anybody can do it.  If it’s in violation of policy, point that out. If it’s insulting write the author.

There are tons of ways to communicate without resorting to censorship.  Think before you throw a shit fit. That’s half the battle. Put things into context and assume your audience is intelligent (most of the time).

But alas our tongues are tied and our fingers kept from keyboarding certain letters in order to spell certain words…George Carlin Composed a list of the 7 words you can’t say on TV “shit piss fuck cunt, cocksucker motherfucker and tits” and tits doesn’t even belong on the list. The same applies to racial slurs.

Someday we’ll get over it.

After all, if people wearing white sheets over their heads can rally in hate, why can we not write for hope?

We’ve come a long way.

But idiots with pitchforks and personal vendettas keep throwing us back.

Hopefully someday we can use all words properly.

After all, the Hindus have a symbol the nazis stole and inverted, which means nothing like the connotation Hitler gave it. Why should the word “Nig”;  some ignorant whites hundreds of years ago used, stop us from writing and speaking?

As long as there are humans there will always be idiots.

and as long as people invent derogatory insults for condescending purposes, there will always be thought control and censorship.

Words have the power to move and inspire change. Words can make or break a country, speech or even twist for humour. What's written isn't half as bad as what's being said at home (not always...often). What's cool lingo on the streets, might be hot topic or barred in various places.

Rightly so. Because words can be powerful.

That's why dumb people shouldn't be literate. They make us all look bad— cuz some are only half literate and won't take the time to look deeper.

Someday, someone will write about SLAVERY in poetic verse or in an epic. They'll need that word for accuracy and impact. If it's not used to bring anybody down (ie documentary purposes, historical purposes, hippy protest etc etc).

I had the full N word written here. I had to censor it.

I'll follow the rules, I don't want a huge fuss or pay fines or whatever other consequences may be.

Just know this: I didn't call anybody an "N", I didn't say it in condescention- I only spoke ABOUT THE WORD AND ITS CONNOTATION.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

now for my next trick, I'm going to pull rockets out of my ass!
N word- use your imagination, you're not that daft I know it

George Carlin: famous comedian with lots of good rants about common sense, words, language. You should listen someday

I seem to be in the middle ground here.I agree with the usage of certain words if they are to validate something,as in your example, however, without censorship of some kind my worry would be that where would the line be drawn? I already read swear words that are unnecessary within poetry on site.We cannot erase from historical fact that coloured people were once referred to by certain offensive names, however,by writing those names down we may be teaching a new generation terminlogy that they don`t need, we may be perpetuating these names by their usage. In ideal world we would have self censorship on site but as everyone has different standards that may not be relied upon.A very interesting debate.

Well done Kryspin. Say it as it is.
Personally I am 100% in favour of censorship.
    Self Censorship!
I would hope we all do this automatically when we consider the context of our utterances and choose the appropriate word according to the intention and the audience. If we have done this correctly then there is no reason for others to jump in. Especially if they do not consider those two areas of audience and intention.

As you point out. If something offends you personally then you personally should speak to the author. You should not become the modern equivalent of that old infamous Bawdler.

As I am sure you are aware there is an epic on slavery in the public domain. I refer to Harriet Beecher Stowe's classic Uncle Tom's Cabin which contains that word and its plural 109 times {Project Guttenberg etext version}.

Should this masterpiece, written by someone with first hand experiences of the culture that bred the terminology, be banned?

See, now, here we go - another on of you delusional types who expect that just because a person has a brain in their head that they should us it. I mean, seriously "Think before you throw a shit fit. That’s half the battle."? What kind of antiquated sentiment is that? Don't you know that there are governing bodies and clergy out there to do that FOR US?

Ok, enough sacasm. At least for the present.

I agree that censoship is never the answer. If people have the chance to discover the true power of words unhindered, then they will never learn how to use them properly. I have always believe that words are tools of both creation, destruction and of change. The are the foundation of worlds. In forbidding the use of certain words, we limit what can be created and changed.

    Well written piece. And bravo.

^ahh now all of the stupid people on an island together? that would be great for the rest of us... ahhh oh so great! haha

Wow, just wow. Such a touchy topic, everyone has their own ideas about it and all of that, but I think you were able to pull it off without really insulting/hurting anyone, I mean you didn't insult/hurt/offend (etc. etc.) me, if it matters. Great job with this. You were able to express what you felt and to me, that's always great. I liked this, awesome job and keep up the great work, it's too bad people are prudes and they made you censor this, bastards....

Free Speech Online!!! Blue Ribbon Campaign! Of all places the Blue Ribbon Campaign (or at least the advocation fo free speech) should be strong is AllPoetry. It's a sad state when we can't even talk *about* certain words.

A friend of mine (white) uses the standard greeting "BLACK PEOPLE!!! BLACK ONES!!!" The first time he did it I was looking around to see if anyone had heard him. He pointed out that while he's not saying anything negative, simple "black people", that about 90 percent of the population takes a negative meaning, and inject the negative connotation into his greeting by themselves.

Agh. We should ship all the stupid people to an island somewhere. They are stupid... how hard could it be to trick them?

To "cave into" "to waffle" all for the sake of political correctness! Is just wrong! It's cowardice! If one person is offended than all have to suffer? Isn't that tantamount to driving a school bus full of children off a cliff to save the dog on the road? This sounds to me like the type of dicipline the military uses. My God! Thomas Payne, Thomas Jefferson, Shakespear, W. Sommerset Maugham, Rudyard Kipling, Sylvia Plath,Richard Pryor, Paul Robeson, James Baldwin (just a few off the top of my head) they all must be turning in their graves! I read and responded to the open letter to Kevin and I stand by what I said there. I think that there are some that need to seriously grow up and get over themselves! You can use words like cunt which is a word equally as derogatory, humiliating, degrading and inflammatory as "n". You know the mouse works much in the same way a remote control does. If you don't like what you're reading. MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE. CHANGE THE CHANNEL.

    Great Job.

First of all, I'll post a disclaimer, I really agree with you. But, in the spirit of the Devil's Advocate, I'm going to point out two things that I saw in this that I disagree with.

    The First being:

"Put things into context and assume your audience is intelligent (most of the time)."

I don't know if this is a rant or what, maybe I just misunderstrood you, but I've had a lot of things that I've sent for publication sent back because some idiot, in some building 2000 miles away was offended by one word in a fucking long poem. Honestly, I don't think there is anyway in the world, no matter how perfect you write something, to get around offending at least one close-minded, hypocritical individual. Just my 2 cents.

    Second:

"As long as there are humans there will always be idiots."

Amen. I don't think I've ever heard a truer statement about humanity. There will always be that one person who thinks that what we do is wrong, or immoral, or whatever. The only problem I have with a blanket statement such as this is, that for the most part, what is normal? We always talk about stupid people doing things that we don't understand, however, who are we to say those who disagree with us are stupid? Once again, Just my 2 cents.

All in all, I really think this is an awesome write. It provokes a lot of intriguing questions about who or what we are and why we do the things we do. Thank you for taking the time to open my eyes. See ya around.

    zZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZipP!

    mMmMmmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmmMmMmMmff...

    I prefer button flies, myself.

Maybe me need a "durogatory term" filter. Because i can sit here and make a list of words that can be taken the wrong way.

What's the phrase; I'm not a racist. I hate everyone equally.

As usual this site opens up another can of worms it cant fich with. Perhaps if i say "skinhead" i will offend one of those Nazi bastards. wait a minute, can i say "bastard"

I used bastard in a durogatory manner; i just offneed every orphan on the site. Hell i just offended every German on the site.

    lets go on...

    What if i say "slope"

either i just offeneded every oriental on the site or i just offened every snowboarder.

what if i say "fag" or "queer"

god for bid. but i have seen those terms used often on this site. I have even used them myself in my ted e bear and dollface rants. I won a gold trophy for the first one i ever wrote and entered in the "write like chasingtheday" contest.

and i had alot of gays applaud that write.

Granted it all depends on how the word is used in the context of a sentence. where does it end? who defines this terminiogy. that any gove word at any given time can and will offend anyone or everyone.

again; the site policies need to shat or get off the pot.

they cannot define any hardline policies and has no one to blame but theirselves.

there are two things i've learned from posting on this site.

don't believe anything you hear, and half of what you see.

(assuming yu can get your page to load)

& you can't argue with stupid.

that this site aint far from the recycle bin.

ah I did catch a few of those, but between getting hijacked and flooded with spyware/adware popups I've been having problems- no excuse!

I did go over your suggestions and corrected. Although the comma places you commented on, can be written with or without and still be grammatically correct. I used to comma quite a bit, then when I did the hardcore grammar in College English- I realized there are many ways to write without using the comma. It is over used, misused and misunderstood. Poor thing. Just like pronouns

"But I did write it to insult anyone."

    Do you mean 'didn't'?

"If it’s insulting, write the author."

I think that comma goes there.

"“shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker and tits”"

    And commas there, I believe.

"And as long as people invent derogatory insults for condescending purposes, there will always be thought control and censorship."

    Capitalization.

"Words have the power to move and inspire change. Words can make or break a country, speech or even twist for humour."

    And there.

    "Rightly so."

    There too.

"That's why dumb people shouldn't be literate. They make us all look bad— cuz some are only half literate and won't take the time to look deeper."

There as well. And, if it were me, I wouldn't use 'cuz', but instead, 'cause.

    "hippy protest etc etc)."

Typo. You put three p's in hippy.

"Now for my next trick, I'm going to pull rockets out of my ass!"

    Capital.

Very nice work. I liked it a lot.

This is a well thought and written look at the issue.I have been in trouble before and will again.I will soon be in trouble with the fcc if I don't curb my seeming need to throw darts into the crowd. When I use shocking language, I do it in a calculated way.Sometimes I think I need a tongue in cheek icon to clarify for small minded people who would keep it all nice and soft.If someone fails to care for language in a piece, click, it's gone and you are reading about kittens or Dick butt*ed Jane, which, oddly enough, gives the censors no fits like the ones produced by those foolish enough to use adjectives in an attempt to inspire or inform.Best of luck with this mellow but succinct write that may get people thinking who are too tender to get the less sensitive messages here.Great job.

I've been asked to remove words from my entry into this contest as well, and have refused to do so. "They" will remove it for me, or so I've been told. Sad, that such ignorance still has a place in this world.

O.J. got off because of a stupid technicality because Furman used the N word on a tape where he was working on a book about police and how they acted. Well, you gotta know that a derogatory remark even IN context is not always meant to be degrading or imply something. I taught my kids not to use the word, while their daddy and granddaddy said and continue to say it. Another thing my teenage kids are saying to their FRIENDS, not when they disagree just in conversation is "You’re so gay". It means nothing to them, it's a fad and hopefully everyone will come to a day when you hear what is said from the SPEAKER'S INTENT instead of YOUR INTURPRETION.

Kevin, I think you are missing the very obvious point, which makes me quite sad in all honesty. When used in poetry, the words you find so offensive could, in fact, be easily used to make a point, and that point doesn't always have to be of a hateful nature but, instead, to point out the FLAWS of hate in the first place. You are not censoring freedom of thought by censoring these words, you are censoring a cure.

I love the view from where you sit little sister! I agree, what's so damn hard about not reading something if it offends you? Walk away! Duh! Even place the SOB on the ignore list if he/she is truly an ignorant "idiot". You have captured the sentiments of many, and mused with intelligence and great candior. I love this! I'm not trying to cause a fuss, it was a contest entry and I understand the rules are in place for a reason. There is another write that implies the use but simply refers to it as "The N" word. It is tasteful and shows progression and different uses.

    Don't worry, I won't be any trouble

I'm all for 'writing for hope'. I have yet to see very many non-racist uses the 'nigger'. The only reason to use it is because of it's racist history. Most of the world just isn't ready to see this word again yet. Give it another 10 years, I'm sure it will be fine then.

I agree that censorship restricts poetic freedom, and we've had this discussion before. Perhaps there will be a future completely unmoderated allpoetry site, but that's not the case now, so I ask you (and all our members) to please stick to the rules we've set up.
