On Cops, Firefighters, EMTs, Military, and Teachers

.

So I had a new guy as my driver for the period of time I was actually out on the road today. He's working here part time to get extra money. His actual job? He's a firefighter. And in one month he'll be graduating as a certified EMT, which he is actually required to do in the county he works in (most counties here do not allow you to just be EMT, you also have to be a firefighter. In some counties, the EMTs are also required to be cops instead of firefighters). His pay? $23,000.00 a year. As he says, he's actually bringing in more money as an armored guard than as a firefighter.

Opinion time, no ass kissing intended, this is just something I've always thought.

I think we should take these actors/actresses and these sports players and pay them what teachers are paid. Then take all those millions of dollars and spread them across fields of work that actually matter. Ya know, teachers, cops, EMTs, and firefighters. And military.

There is no reason why a starting firefighter should not be making AT LEAST $45,000.00 a year. Think about this. We have teachers, which are the people who are teaching our children and prepping them to run the world eventually.

Military: who risk their lives on many levels to defend our country.

Police: who go out on those streets every day and get spit at and shot at just to protect the same people who spit at them and shot at them the night before.

Firefighters: who run in to burning buildings to save the lives of people inside, even though it could possibly cost them a horrible death, too.

EMTs: who go out every day in to the thick of God knows what with no weapons to deal with injured and sick people, many of which are trying to hurt them, too.

And we can't pay them better than $23,000.00 a year? But Joe Nike can make $10 million a year for running a ball across a field? Fuck you!

Just my opinion.

    A good but flawed point

Although I agree it simply can never be that simple. People pay for what it is that they want. Untill the masses are willing to pay a higher taxation these things will never happen. This takes on many issues of how to tax people and the simple answer is the rich are not taxed enough.
Unfortunatly its not an issue of what people do but what people want and how selective performing in that occupation is.

I couldn't have agreed more with this write. Thank you for bringing to light one of those little things that most of us don't think about. I hope to never need to have close contact with a firefighter, a policeman, or an EMT, but if I do I hope that they are paid well for saving my life! I'm currently in the public school system, and every day I wonder how much better it would be if we actually had decent teachers. And you know why we don't have decent teachers? Because they don't make enough! People have suggested that I go into teaching, but I won't because I want to be self-sufficient, thank you very much! Sorry, kinda got carried away there... Anyway, great persuasive write! I have the feeling that even if I hadn't agreed with you to begin with by this point I would be singing your tune, just because of your eloquence, good arguments, and backing information. Great write! Applause time...

Erin, my dear sister, you have said something that many of us have thought of for years. Actors we can do without, but those you have mentioned, we need desperately. And they ARE heroes! Even the teachers sometimes risk their lives just to teach our children.

An excellent write and I, for one, share your point of view. God bless them all! Hugs, Patricia

WOW... This is a very powerful column Auntie Erin!!! I love this... I completely agree (and not just because I'm going to be a teacher in the next few years)... I think that the people mentioned in this column are a lot more important than Actors/Jocks/ect... Thank you so much for writing this!!

    Hugs,
