A Practical Guide To Loading A Graphic Onto A Page

A mechanical guide to loading graphics at AP

This column is the work of the author and methods, statements and opinions expressed are not to be construed as the official policy of or of any person appointed in a position of authority at AP. All actions are at the reader’s risk.

The Correct Method of Inserting Images at

This guide assumes you are a Gold or Silver Member

As a newbie on AP it is not always obvious how to accomplish things. This is a guide to inserting graphics legally. Copyright is not discussed. NB This guide deals with LOADING a graphic onto a page. For other information about graphics see 'A Practical Guide to the Text and Graphics Box'

How To...
The first step is to locate your graphic and copy it to  your computer. (We’ll copy it to My Pictures for reference).

2 Log on to AP in your  Name.

3 On the right-hand side of your ‘my poetry ' page you will find:

This is on the right of the page, at the top

4 Click on ‘settings’ to take you to the ‘settings’ page

5 Once there, click on ‘custom backgrounds

6 Once on your ‘custom backgrounds ’ page, click on ‘browse

7 This should take you to:

Please excuse the graphic!

8 Highlight and select the graphic you wish to upload to AP.

9 Press the upload button:

Your graphic will now be available in ‘background manager’

10 If you are using more than one graphic, repeat steps 1-9 until all are loaded into your AP background manager.

11 It is easier to open more then one browser window to load graphics into a poem, but this guide assumes you will only use one at a time. Write your poem/author’s page/column and save it, estimating where you would like to insert your graphic.

12 Return, via ‘settings’ , then ‘manage backgrounds ’ to the background manager and locate the graphic you wish to insert.

13 Place your cursor over the image and right click and select ‘properties

14 A (grey) box will open with the image properties. Using your mouse, highlight the URL

15 Right click and select ‘copy’. This will place the highlighted URL onto your computers clipboard.

16 Press the ‘cancel’ button and go back to your poem or page. Select ‘edit’ from the top of the poem. When the ‘edit’ window opens, go into the text entry box, find the place where you wish to insert the image with your cursor and click there. On the text entry box menu bar find the ‘Insert Image’ icon  and click on it.

17 The URL is still on your clipboard. When the ‘Insert Image’ dialogue box opens, click into the ‘Image URL ’ box and delete the ‘http://’ that is there so that the box is empty. Right click and select ‘paste’. This should paste the image URL into the box. Press OK and the image should load into your poem/page.

INFO: The ‘alternate text’ box is a ‘mouseover’ box. Type in text and when the image is loaded and a reader hovers their mouse over the image, after a short pause, the text you typed here will ‘appear’ on the screen and disappear when the mouse is removed from the image! Smileys will not work here and will cause a glitch.

18 The wise thing to do is to update or save each time you load an image by pressing the appropriate 'Edit' button (see below). This avoids you having to go through the whole process again from the start.

19 Your poem/page should now have the graphic embedded into it. (With an author's page, you need to press 'my poetry' to view the final page as it stays on the edit page.) Assuming all the images are available on AP, for each image repeat steps 12 to 19 until finished.

They say that a picture paints a thousand words. Note that Images of excessive violence, self-harm or those likely to be deemed pornographic are not allowed on Allpoetry.

This guide does not cover 'smart' positioning or moving the graphic after it is placed into your poem/page. Go play and good luck

Good luck to one and all
Ideas as to what you think should be covered in future 'How To's would be gratefully received

    Good job :)

I want to learn how to do this, so I am glad to see the infomation here. I know it will be a challenge for me being a newbie and all, but I have faith. I think the poems just look so much better with the graphics. They give them that unique, personal touch. That says its only from you.

Okay Topaz me dear. I have a question that I think you are best suited to answer I got the graphics loading finally, am able to center it [oh THANK YOU!] but only one question remains: In order to load multiple graphics onto a page here, they have to be uploaded as backgrounds? I mean that's a lot of images for mods to look through. Am I correct? Sorry I know you're on Mod holiday but you know this so well and I appreciate your tutorials

Very good column... I'm intriqued by the Delilah parody lyrics you used as an example... LOL... I do have a question though- is there a page that explains in detail what's allowed and what's not as far as images go? I know I may be an exception but I don't think censorship of any art is good- although I can understand wanting to control things that aren't directly words, for whatever reasons. Just wondering if there's an actual page for people to read, or just a warning that pictures are reviewed.

    Brilliance TRUE GOLD

~God Bless you Topaz~ This is a long distance call, thank you for helping us all.
I was longing for instructions on how to upload multiple images on allpoetry. For me the experience was a magical turn around. I am on a MAC G4, which only has Internet Explorer 5.2. Which means i am i am not compatible with allpoetry. Well where there is a will there is a way. Internet Explorer Version 6 is not and never will be available for the Macintosh. Therefore in my quest to be my creative best. I found a crack in the light to share with everyone in the light of the sun. If ever anyone asks you how do you upload multiple images on a Macintosh? The answer is very easy, as easy as 1 2 3. After many hours of discussing this dilemma with Macintosh Technical Staff there is only one solution. The answer is Purchase Microsoft Virtual PC for MAC, Version 7, With Windows XP Professional. Microsoft does provide a Home version with the same name, which is less expensive. ~Namaste Blessed Be, to you and yours eternally, thanks for sharing this well thought out diagram to help all of us. If my author’s page disappears i will let you know. Until then i will joyfully follow all your heaven sent instructions! Thank you and Maatkara, once again for your help and insight on the proper formatting of images. "The Correct method of Inserting Images at AllPoetry". I for one would applaud the decision when anyone joins allpoetery they should immediately be linked to your page and the other Author's Page who instructs you on how to place the smiley's, and roses in your private and system messages. Your page is well constructed and shows everyone clearly what to do step by step. Who could ask for more? ~Je'tadore in silver wings of Amour, Love & Light Sharron

Yay! You beat me to this... I have spelled this out so many times I was about to write a column on 'How To' myself. You saved me the trouble . Well done, the visual graphics are great too. I have a query about the 'copy & paste' of the URL into the pop-up window... How do you do that without the pop-up disappearing? I always type it in.. ?? Anyway, good job, Kim.

That's a good point about uploading to AP first, so that the other servers are not burdened with false "hits". This looks pretty clear to me, well done, and well illustrated.
Not that it's of any use to me.
