Briefly the criteria are Relevance, Decency and Courtesy.

Other than the rule about the time elapsing between a poet’s death and their work appearing on the Oldpoetry site, I wouldn’t like to be too prescriptive about how we work. With translations though I do feel that we should try to make things as clear as possible for the readers and so I have some recommendations.

There is a whole world of poetry out there and a whole world of potential readers. I am conscious that we are not reaching vast areas of that target audience since we post work, predominantly, in English. True we do have a smattering of other languages on offer as well as translations of some of the more prominent non-English poems.
But we do not have enough.

Poems have been written about War since the dawn of time, yet the stature of the greatest of World War 1 poets is unquestioned.
Some of the most beautiful poetry ever written has come from the horrors of the trenches. Represented here are poems quickly written in the full awareness of the battlefield, and some written with the benefit of hindsight.

Oldpoetry is a free site run by volunteers who enjoy poetry for people who also enjoy poetry.
We want to pass on our love of poetry and give a single point of reference for the many fine poets from all over the world who have contributed to the development of the genre.
That includes well known poets such as Chaucer, Whitman, Tagore and Patterson as well as the thousands of less well known poets whose work has nevertheless given pleasure to many people and, perhaps, influenced them to go on to write good poems of their own.
-
Oldpoetry is basically a site with poems by OLD poets. Those that are out of copyright and hard to find. We do have a few by authors after 1950 but not many and only those with a solid reputation and generous copyright holders.
We are here primarily for fun but many readers, especially students, find it a useful project resource.
As you are aware it is a free site. No user charges.

August: not only named for Augustus Roman Emperor 63 B.C.–A.D. 14. It also celebrates such wonderful events as all ‘Horses birthdays’ (1st) , 4th is ‘National Twins Day’, 6th is ‘Wiggle your Toes day” hard to beat perhaps but the 13th takes some beating as ‘Blame Someone Else day’ and one we can perhaps all relate to is ‘Bad Poetry Day’ on the 18th.**
