  • You'll notice a 'customize' link next to your 'new poems by friends' list on the front page. Click it to choose which of your friends you'd like to have included. There's also a 'fast' link in the chatterbox - click it to make it 'live', so you'll see updates as they're made.
  • I'm planning to remove the 'friends' stuff and just go back to 'favorites'.
  • OLD - see the newer column. This was ideas for splitting up favorites from friends, and calling them "readers" and a "reading list".
  • More tweaks to the notification system. Briefly: default no longer emails @ new friend adding a poem, option to stop favorites from being emailed when you post, joint settings across sites.
  • The email notification system I mentioned in my last post is now live. Some of you will be irritated by the email you suddenly get, but hopefully some of you also find it useful. It's designed to be easy to disable - there's a link in 'my account' for notification preferences.

There's also been many bug-fixes, and some behind the scene upgrades which caused some random error messages over the last few days (but are now fixed). Go-poetry!
  • I'm excited to announce the 'beta test' version of Chatact, Allpoetry's newest sister site. It's targeted at role-players, with groups and journals being the main focus. There are contests too. Please be patient with any bugs Check it out!
  • Poems by online users has replaced rewards as the default for when you click the 'read' link. I've also cleaned up the sidebar when browsing poems, and simplified the 'add a feature' page.

When making a comment, you can choose a poem of yours to ask the person to 'return the favor' by commenting. Seemed like it might make that a more social feature.

Journals now autosave drafts like they should, and a few dozen other bugs have been fixed. The chatroom hopefully will lag less now as well.
  • The comment rating system has been updated again. Now you can rate a comment however many stars you like - that's up to you, as it should be.

The points given are based on the length, so a small (<100 letter) comment gets 1 point per star, medium gets 2 points, and long gets 3 points.

Points are given by the site, based on ratings, to encourage longer and more constructive comments. Intentionally "padding" comment length is not allowed and can get you in trouble if caught.

  • Comments of 100-130 characters now have a maximum rank of 3 stars. 130-200 character comments can be awarded 4 stars. 200 characters isn't really that long - just exactly as long as this paragraph is!

The goal of this is to encourage people to write longer, more meaningful comments. Authors love hearing details about how you felt reading their poem. Take a second longer and write something that is useful!

Edit: Added some more reasons and explanations.
  • Lingering bug from the database upgrade should be fixed, for example with addlines. The featured box now attempts to hide adult items from users who can't view them, and will display a * (star) at the end of the title if something is adult. The "chat with this user" link is back - invite your friends to chat about a poem!
  • With this update we introduce the idea of 'friends', which are favorites that have also added you as a favorite. Also, when you click on a poem in the featured box, you'll be encouraged to comment before leaving the page. And much more, please report any bugs you might stumble across
  • We call it writing "practice", in the menus here. I've just moved some of my favorite topics to the top of the list, so get inspired!

This is a great way to keep up with National Poetry Month - even if you haven't started yet, jump in!

  • a.k.a. NaPoMo, the goal of this is that you write a poem *every day* for the month of April. If you write one for each day this month, we'll give you a free month of silver membership! Join the NaPoMo Group 2, or just post them as regular poems with the napomo category. Lets get writing!
  • April fools day is one of my favorite days of the year. Here I chronicle this year's attempt at humor, along with some (anonymized) responses.
  • American Life in Poetry: Column 201 "At 14" by Ted Kooser, U.S. Poet Laureate 2004-2006, from Kevin
  • American Life in Poetry: Column 200 by Ted Kooser, U.S. Poet Laureate 2004-2006, from Kevin
  • We've been testing it for weeks, but now most of the bugs are ironed out and I'm excited to announce that allpoetry now supports Journals! Blog or write about your day to day life, things you're excited about, etc. Choose 'add' at the top, then 'add a journal' on the right side. Or just browse the journals at alljournal.com.
  • Ghost Villanelle - American Life in Poetry 187 by Ted Kooser, U.S. Poet Laureate 2004-2006, Poem by Dan Lechay, from Kevin
This one is topical to a bit ago, halloween. Do the drifting veils of rhyme and meter disclose a ghost, or is it a ghost?
  • How Is It That the Snow, American Life in Poetry 193 by Ted Kooser, U.S. Poet Laureate 2004-2006, from Kevin
The first two lines of this poem pose a question many of us may have thought about: how does snow make silence even more silent? And notice Robert Haight's deft use of color, only those few flecks of red, and the rest of the poem pure white. And silent, so silent. Haight lives in Michigan, where people know about snow.
  • American Life in Poetry: Column 191 by Ted Kooser, U.S. Poet Laureate 2004-2006, from Kevin
Most of us love to find things, and to discover a quarter on the sidewalk can make a whole day seem brighter. In this poem, Robert Wrigley, who lives in Idaho, finds what's left of a Bible, and describes it so well that we can almost feel it in our hands.
  • We've updated the front page for halloween! You might also notice the new darker raven, he's the winter raven, and should visible on the site about half the year
Also some bugfixes and changes, particular with the quick-comment feature to make it hover over poem content less.
  • Contest minimums have been increased. The featured box now randomly shows 7 of the top 15 bids, and rewards only show one item per person.
  • On the edit background page, there are now checkboxes on the right to 1) have the background image stay on the left edge of the screen, and 2) turn off the line (if there was one).

These options are in the right column, under "Advanced".

If you want all of your past poems with left-justified images to be like this, a moderator can update them in bulk for you.
  • Today the announced change to center the page for people with large monitors took place.

Most bugs are fixed now. Please post if you notice things looking especially strange, and I'll try and take a look. Thanks to everyone for your support, and lets get back to poetry
  • It has dawned on me that most of our poets probably don't realize that everyone's monitor is different, so just because their screen looks great now, it doesn't look great on everyones.

I briefly go into what the site looks like currently on monitors, and what it will look like after the upgrade.
  • And front page design Hope you like them! The front page top image will change every few months, roughly with the seasons.

Update: some IE6 users weren't seeing the logo nor the 'Read' menu. This should be fixed now.

You may also notice that it is centered on the screen. Over the next week, all pages will be centered like that on large monitors. We'll be upgrading the background chooser so you can choose the 'edge' color. Happy poetry writing!
  • We're doing an experiment - all bids in the featured box have just been refunded. The base cost is 5, and will of course go up depending upon what people pay. Please join me in attempting to read and comment as much as possible to keep the costs low! Click 'read' just below the featured box to use our new 'quick read' feature.
  • Drafts are here! And autosaving every minute while you're adding your poem. To view drafts, click 'add from a draft' on the right of the add page.

Also a new format for browsing notes, advanced mode now defaults to the regular allpoetry header, and the 'Read' button under the featured box goes straight to a 'quick comment' page that should help keep down featured bid costs.
  • My obsession has carried me towards another set of potential logos. I think one of these will be the lucky one!
  • We've had our current awesome logo for several years now, and it's time for a change. I'll present several that I've been working on, as well as my current favorite.
  • Below the online list on the right, you'll notice a new menu for 'Your mood is'. You can set your mood as a smiley, and it will show next to your name for your favorites. Your "mood text" will also show below the link to 'View profile' when they hover over your name. We're still testing some things with the latest update, so please be patient with the bugs
  • The title bar along the top goes all the way across the screen and is more consistenly colorful. The 'send message' box is now always open, rather than doing it's little hide thing. The IM page got an overhaul, and on your profile edit page is 'edit advanced' and 'allow another to edit'. Ads have been minimized some, especially the ones shown in contests and comments.
  • The chatroom is a common source of frustration on Allpoetry, and we've launched a new system where you get to be the chat moderator. Anyone can make anonymous complaints, and users who get multiple complaints will be given a short chat ban. Also, we've lowered purchasing point costs quite a bit, so get 'em while they're hot! And made countless other little site-tweaks and fixes that you will hopefully enjoy.
  • American Life in Poetry: Column 161 by TED KOOSER, U.S. POET LAUREATE, 2004-2006, from Kevin
This poem by Jonathan Holden introduces us to a young car salesman
  • American Life in Poetry: Column 151 by Ted Kooser, U.S. POET LAUREATE, 2004-2006, from Kevin
  • Past top commentors... the 'current' list was getting too long, so I'm clearing it and postin these old winners here
  • Now available at Amazon: Feeling is first!
  • A new small feature is the browsing history at the bottom of the page. It shows the last 4 pages you've visited. Some seem to find it useful, and some not so much - what group do you belong to?
