A Practical Guide To ÅLT codes and Emoticons

ALT codes

This column is the work of the author Methods, statements and opinions expressed are not to be construed as the official policy of or of any person appointed in a position of authority at AP. All actions are at the reader’s risk. All names shown in images are imaginary and bear no intentional resemblance (at the time of writing) to any AP name.

Emoticons

If posted into the Chatterbox as a single emoticon, adding a space BEFORE the emoticon usually avoids the emoticon coming out as just text.

Note: the text has no spaces, even if there seem to some here

Note: These emoticon codes can sometimes be a bit flaky and will only work when other emoticons are placed before them. If you bothered to read this note then the last  emoticons is a spoof but isn't it great? lol

ALT codes

Alt codes overcome the limitations of a keyboard by using the ALT (alternative) function together with the character keys. These were vital to keep keyboards down to a reasonable size yet extend the characters available. They are a legacy from the early days of computing.

To input a character that is not on the keyboard:
(note: the charactyers that ARE on the keyboard also have ALT codes but I have not bothered with them)

Press AND hold down the ' ALT ' key and also type in the relevant number using the Number Pad on the right-hand side of the keyboard. Release the 'ALT' key

The top row of numbers do not work with the ALT key. The leading zero MUST be keyed in.

What's the blank space code? Not the Alt + 32 because that doesn't work for bio pages.
BUT this is an awesome guide. You rockers

    EDIT
    nevermind. alt + 0160 works

Thanks, although you did not even begin to cover all the ALT Codes, lol, there are so many, although you left out one that would be used a lot and that is the heart, I have found like 4 codes for it but the simplest is ALT & 259 ¢¾ ...... for anyone reading this please note that you are not hitting the & key, you are simply, holding down ALT, pressing in the number sequence, then letting go of ALT ... ok, now my question to you Topaz is, Do you know the ALT Codes for getting the Infinity Symbol also known as the sideways eight? I did not see it above. Thanks for the help. CHA!

Hi! I appreciate the time you put into this page indeed! I printed it, made my own copy in Word and got the codes on my monitor. Thankie you! Question: the spoofs, means that there is no way to make them happen? How can I find out how to do other emoticons, since they look like yahoo emoticons, there must be a way to do the others that are not in here.. well. hopefully? In any case, as I said, this helped a lot.

Oh, this is VERY helpful. I've been wondering how I will ever post work in French or whatnot... I am going to bookmark this (though it appears I have too much bookmarked already!) One question- is the emoticons section in progress? Or was it supposed to be a link?
