I suppose this nation never really gave me equal rights to begin with. It started out with a general idea, 'equality for all', not really knowing that they truly meant 'equality for straight white males'. Thankfully, the true meaning was never written, and fair men of the court came to see, after much turmoil, that that phrase actually meant 'straight men and women'.
And probably - no, definitely - I have it way better than the generations of gay men before me. At least I don't risk certain death by coming out. Rather, that risk has been diminished, depending on where in the country I live.
So who am I to complain, really, when the majority of my "equals" use the Democratic process to strip me of a right I never had the chance to be afforded?
Ah, yes, says the priest. Homosexuals will rape your children and deplete your mores. (He would certainly know, wouldn't he?) Definitely, says the sunshine brat Anita Bryant, we must protect our children from the nasty vile influences that gay men JUST PLAN to carry out.
And yet, you would think that in the 21st century, human beings would have evolved enough to recognize logic from irrationality. No, that's not the case.
It is quite sickening, I must tell you, to watch your fellow citizens vote your rights (they say don't exist) from existence. I suppose the only solution is to grow up to be a bitter old man scorned by bigotry and hatred. Sickening more, perhaps, to know that some of those are people you have come to admire.
Democracy at its finest.
To be a second class citizen.
