Notification system live, and other fixes

The email notification system I mentioned in my last post is now live. Some of you will be irritated by the email you suddenly get, but hopefully some of you also find it useful. It's designed to be easy to disable - there's a link in 'my account' for notification preferences.

There's also been many bug-fixes, and some behind the scene upgrades which caused some random error messages over the last few days (but are now fixed). Go-poetry!
As people experience the notification system, I'd love to hear feedback about how it might be improved

Another minor upgrade is that when you check 'show edge lines' in the background editing system, it'll let you choose the color of the line.

Quite a few emoticons have been added to the system as well, by request.

Thanks for your patience with the upgrades, and happy poetry writing!

Kevin, can you please make it so that when people get emails about new poems posted, they don't actually receive the poem in said email and just the link to the poem instead so that they have to log in to view it? A lot of people are uncomfortable with the idea of their poems getting mailed out to anyone who happens to have them added on their favorites list and it's not exactly a comforting thought to me that they have a copy of my poem in their email and could easily claim it as their own. I wouldn't care if it was only the people on my favorites list receiving them, as I happen to trust those people, but it's not something I or many others are comfortable with when it comes to people we deem as strangers.

I really don't think you have any right to do that sort of thing without our permission. You're breaching our privacy and that's not okay.

for once, I have no complaints. I know you were holding your breath for that one. I never check my email anyway, so what do I care if people are notified or not? Half of them dont comment anyway. Thanks for working to make this site member-friendly. New emoticons...I can sleep a happy woman tonight, knowing I will awaken with new emotes to play with tomorrow.

I have turned off the notifications, but continue to get emails when a favorite posts a new poem. Is there some lag time we should be aware of before our changes take effect?

why hasn't a horse been added to the emoticons by now? Not just the cowboy poets would enjoy it...

I also notice that I can't get rid of the edge line, no matter if I check "hide" or "show" or both.

As for the notification; I received it and was able to follow the link provided to disable it, so no problem.

    I am concerned!
The AP terms of use do not appear to give you the right to email my poetry to your users. They give you the right to display it on the Internet. I do not think an email meets that description. When people read on AP I can see that they have done so, but I do not have even that illusory control over emailed poems.

Shouldn't poets have the right to not have their poems emailed out in this way?

100% agree with Cricketjeff here, surely a link to a new poem would be better that way the reader at least will visit the site.

Thanks for the updates, Kevin. I've already turned off the notification, as I am online every day, usually, so it's not an essential feature for me to have in place. However, there is one issue that's been on the forum list for awhile regarding an issue that (apparently only) some of us are having, a question about the "newest by favorites" listings.

As of this moment, there are 15 new posts by the same author showing on my "newest by favorites" list. And she's probably not done yet, either.

I really don't want to have to delete her again just to able to see new poems from my other favorite authors. Is there any resolve to this issue? I did go to the notifications page to turn off the "poem preview" portion, but that doesn't help much, as far as adding more new poems by other people.

I do appreciate that these things take time and considerable effort to manipulate into place, so thank you.

And thanks for the new emoti-crayons.

I suffer from this too, I deliberately keep my number of favourites small so I do not miss their posts but if one of them has a productive night I will see only 1 or 2 poems on my front page, not the 6 I see if no-one has written more than 1 poem.
