controversial column.

pshttt. emal.
alright, so i won't lie, i've read [and probably written] some of the crappiest, stupidest poems in the world and i've been pissed off because i wasted time out of my life to read/write that shit.

but here's the thing- we all started out shitty.
my thirteen year old little sister tries, she really, really tries to be a poet, and she's developing nicely- but the truth is, the first couple she wrote were so horrible that i never thought she'd be able to compose something worth reading.

some kids are sad and some kids are addicts and some kids got beat up by mommy and daddy and they don't really have the best word choice or poetry skills- but they are still expressing themselves, and that in itself is enough for me to respect their words on the screen/paper.

so for those of you that think you are so much better than other writers because you have better structure, better thoughts, better words- get over yourself. everyone is just trying to be heard.

don't leave hateful comments, leave constructive criticism.
be helpful, not hurtful.

[p.s. if there is a little kid that sits in the corner and cuts himself all day because daddy just didn't love him enough, then get him some bandages- don't call him stupid. everyone just wants a place in the world- if we'd all be more open minded there wouldn't be "emo" and "scene" and "redneck" and "prep."]

damn.

i came across this column and i agree on everything you just said. poetry to me isn't just about the structure and what not, it's mostly the feeling you give in to it. they write to let out what they are unable to other people. they do this through their heart and soul through words. it's good to see there's still people like you in the world.

seriously, if i could applaud columns, i would right now.

i agree. i'm so sick and tired of poets on all-poetry thinking they're the best just because they write "prose" or really good freeverse and received a few nice comments or are friends with some random poet here. i have seen firsthand poets here bash poetry just because it was a little cliche. it makes me sick and i think they should be notified of their rude comments. great column! i know i definitely wasn't that good when i started and i'm still growing today.

i was that girl five years ago. i'm pretty sure a lot of the people on this site that i read now would have just written me off then. it's sad, kind of.

and i agree, i think we should be constructive, just because we may be better writers doesn't mean we can't appreciate someone expressing themselves. they could have potential to be amazing.
from that poem up there, no one took me seriously.
