Dear Kevin,
History, when I was at school, was always boring and hard to learn for me and others.
How different it would have been if there had been a site like this where, with just a click, we would be taken to all the history poems written by talented poets to enjoy reading and to learn at the same time.
There are many students on Allpoetry who would benefit from a category on History
and I know that there are many wonderful poets here who write about history but whose work goes unseen by students who would be pleased to add to their knowledge and learning.
Kevin, is it possible for you to consider creating a link or section for poems about History?
My friend Hugh Wyles is only one of many poets who write about historical subjects
which, like the Old Poetry site, deserve a section of their own.
.
Here is one example of Hugh’s writing on History http://allpoetry.com/poem/5499825
Sincerely,
Beatrice Joan Benecke, (Angelica)
A letter to Kevin asking for a History link or section to be included

I'm back and a bit calmer now... lol
Bea,
I am so sorry about that last comment and the rant, I hope you will forgive me. I am passionate about education in America and I do believe that anyone that can assist our children or even adults should reach out and do so. There are poets on this site willing to do their part but many of us do not know who they are and so they go about thinking that one man can't make a difference. They are wrong, one man can make a difference. Imagine what two, or three or four... or twenty four could do? But it all really starts with just ONE man right now who can make a major difference and we now must wait to find out if he is willing to make that difference... Kevin are you willing to make a difference? -
I too have written to Kevin requesting something to be set up to make these sorts of writes easily accessible and the response that I got was a bit disappointing to say the least. However, I must add that it was my understanding that Kevin misunderstood exactly what it is that we are requesting soooooo.... I sent him another request, rewording my request in another manner. Because I can't get to that reply without leaving this box and coming back, I can't quote him, but his reply was something to the effect that his goal on this site was not to teach history but to teach poetry. However, he did finish the reply by saying he would give it some thought, although that is not very comforting after having heard the first half of his reply. I too believe that there could be a link dedicated to these types of writes. It doesn't seem to be that it should be so difficult. We have all of those links at the top of our pages. It seems to me that the link that is marked "learn" could just have another sub link under it titled "poetic tools" or " educational poems" something that poets could click on when they post that would add their poems to that link so that anybody who comes to this site could place a poem with factual information that has teaching value in it there for others to access and use to teach with or learn from. ( Can it really be that difficult to accomplish?) I don't know where this site originates from, but I am located in the United States. Here in the states we are considered the underdogs of the educated world. Our children are so far behind the rest of the world, yet we are so advanced when it comes to our children having access to the internet. It just seems silly to me not to use the internet in every possible way to help educate our children and those who have sites on the internet that can help advance that education without cost to them... why hesitate when you can aid the betterment of society? It really makes no logical sense at all not to... it is a link for petes sake! Please don't take my bluntness as being rude. I am just so passionate about this subject. I am so tired of my children getting a substandard education. So tired of everyone screaming about how our education system lacking yet nobody every wishes to do anything about it. I am so tired of everytime I have tried to go up against any system to help better the education of my children... I get this same ole brick wall! This is the first time that I have fought for my childrens education when there was no money to raise, no buearacratic red tape to cross over and still I am running into red tape... I really am asking myself WHY....why would anyone hesitate to prevent others from learning, especially one whom owns a poetry site... why would they prevent others from learning through POETRY?

KEVIN...
Dear Kevin,
I am in total agreement with Hugh, and Bea. It seems that we have been asking for such an application for a few years now. There are many poets on this site that would contribute to a "history" category. The best way to learn of our history is to write about it. Hugh has poetry here that is written in historical form about historical people. I too have such poetry. I really wish you would consider this option. I know it would enhance the site and help young people with educational assignments, even college students. I know that a month or so ago, I asked you to write a column on the history of AllPoetry. Possibly that column could head off such a sister-site, link, application... however you choose to add this positive entity to an already state of the art site.
Thank you Joan for creating this column. Thank you Hugh and every artist that has written poetry from a historical perspective.
Much Love & Respect ♥
Renee

Dear Bea,
I cannot commend too highly, your initiative in writing this letter to Kevin. I asked him, some time ago, for a "History" category to be added and received a reply which, though rather lukewarm, indicated that my request would at least be considered in future.
Considering that, in our modern education system, little is known or taught by teachers of great men and events that shaped the world as it is, most of our children (and adults too) have little chance of learning
their own historic backgrounds. Knowing that the minstrels and minnesingers of old had passed on history from generation to generation in rhyming ballad form, which is more mentally accessible (less boring?) than prose, I decided, some years ago to attempt by emulation, to present in similar ballad form, the histories of individuals
whose lives have attracted my own interest or that of others who have prompted me such as you did with your request for a ballad about the brothers Barton.
I think Kevin could perform a great service to this site and to readers in general by establishing a section devoted to general History just as we already have one for Old Poetry.
One poet alone of many who I would especially recommend is POETRYALITY who has written a huge number of poems concerning American/African writers and thinkers which are of tremendous historical value and which should be available to students as an easily accessible collection.
I hope that Kevin reponds positively to your request.
With thanks, love and hugs, XXX Hugh. -
WOW! GREAT IDEA AAAJ
I love how Hugh has a nice pic to go along with. Sounds like a splendid idea.

I would like to endorse Angelica's request. Even I at my mature years :-) am learning more about great people/events of history through reading excellent historical poems written by such worthy poets such as Hugh Wyles. Please give this request the consideration it deserves.
Cheers
Anne
