Why do they consider those who talk to themselves or address themselves as other people insane and facing any sort of mental disorder? Most of us do actually speak to ourselves, whether we like it or not, aloud or in silence, and whether we feel ashamed of it or not. It's a part of why we live as human beings, and part of the consequences of the fact that we've been granted a mind to reason with.
Talking to yourself never meant you're a "schizophrenic psycho" or an "MPD" (Multiple Personality Disorder). But at night, when you lay your head on your pillow to sleep, if you rewind the tape of your day, you'll find yourself saying: "I should have said that…", "How on Earth did I do this…??!", "I'm such a coward" or even "I know I was good…" It's both involuntary and natural. It isn't freaky, it isn't crazy, and it has nothing to do with brainsickness.
There's some kind of intangible link between your outer self, the one which deals with people's world, and your inner self, the one which deals with your own world, your internal kingdom. This link varies; according to the way we express ourselves, which may be spoken words, lines of verse, silent thoughts, art, sports, facial expressions or sudden actions. Pens, papers, mirrors, books or even your best friend can perform the role of this link. They simply deliver the hints of your mind outside, where they can be employed in your actions and reactions, especially the verbal ones.
You may think that the inner self is what is generally called the "conscience" which represents the guide who came to life when we first realized that life isn't the innocent pure world we think it is when we're children. It dictates all the do's and don'ts, and sets the general outline for what's good and what's not. But what I'm talking about now is "The Being Within". Beneath each and every one of us lies a unique creature that talks to us every now and then, through a certain route, which I like to call a "personal LINK".
I have to admit, I always loved talking to myself in my bedroom 150cm-lengthed mirror, sometimes, to practice saying something for a presentation, having a nice time singing alone with the loudest voice I can reach, or trying to change the way I smile… however, I caught myself staring silently at my own face, more than once, for no particular reason (does this sound so weird?!). Although I don't think that that moment lasted for long, I guess that it was one of those moments when my "personal link" was being created out of the ocean-deep eye contact between me and myself. Though I cannot find a vivid interpretation for many of what happens throughout my day, it seems like it's not meant for my "outer self" to know, the one who is speaking right now. A mirror is more than just a mere reflection of who you are.
Try drawing and painting, if that by any means appeals to you as much as it does to me. Whether you're good at it or not, you'll end up with some exquisite painting which really expresses your thoughts. Black, grey and white reflect a different "Being Within" yourself than red, blue and green. Detailed drawings of human beings manifest a different personality than that of imprecise features. The "link" between your inner and outer selves is vastly concluded through drawing.
So, talk to you, smile to you, and write for you. Try to be friends with your "Being Within"; know its wants and needs, and don't you ever be ashamed of your tiny chit chat!
Materialism has prevailed, and the links between mind and soul are getting less and less... may we all be granted inner peace...
