Diet for reversing disabilities

i read this awesome poem about disability here http://allpoetry.com/poem/5202273 by BearWoman. OK, disabilities suck. i fell off my dirtbike about a month ago and had my arm in a sling because i hurt my shoulder and had to keep it unmoving and it was sooo frustrating so i kind of understand but not really about how bad it must be to have real and sometimes permanent disabilities, oh and I hate that word permanent too unless you're talking about love or faith. I'll be a doctor someday, i read about hte body all the time, mostly the brain but there are things i read in all areas that say consistent things about taking care of you and giving yourself the best chance of being or getting healthy. One thing, Carbs are totally evil, they stick to your hips and cancer loves them and feeds on them but you still need to have them, most people eat wayyyy too much carbs though. One thing i believe is that the best diet is way low carb with pro alkaline foods where you eat lots of times a day fats and protiens (but not meat protien which is acidity positive, like kidney and pinto beans which are alkaline positive) and bright veggies, especially for guys bright veggies and turmeric is like awesome to keep you from getting prostrate things. ketogenic diets are great if you wanna trim pounds and raise your metabolism faster and burn fat faster because it makes the body use fat for energy instead of carbs because you're not giving it enough carbs and it puts you in a alkaline positive ph in your body if you eat the right veggies that are low starch. Another thing I learned is that cancer can't live in a alkaline positive environment, it dies or at least cant feed right to grow. it also helps make arthritis less, arthritis thrives in a acidity positive ph too. heres a great link to the kind of food thats good for alkaline balance and ones that are bad.

i wish i could help disabled people more, maybe someday i will, i pray God gives me the knowledge to understand it all about the body and to use the knowledge in the right places to cure stuff especially stuff in the brain if i'm blessed to make it past my SATs oh and ketogenics is a diet that was first used on children who had epilepsy and siezures becuase the ketogenic diet produces a anticonvulsive state so if your disability is shaking or convulsing then thats totally the diet and the only reason it didnt grow bigger as a thing for more stuff i think is that they developed anti convulsing drugs and didnt want to lose money selling them by giving people the diet that does the same thing way to go you greedy, bloating politicians dont look at me to play ball im gonna try to avoid giving my patients drugs someday if i can fix them other ways

i wish you all awesome life that gets better everyday and God Bless

Boy, I sure wish you were a Naturapathic doctor now! I'd certainly come to you. You can not find a doctor (well, it's very rare) that will discuss natural ways to work with cancer - all they want to do is slice, dice, radiate and drug with poison chemicals!!! (well, the American docs anyways; most foreign countries no longer use those 'barbaric' treatments )(their words, not mine))....
Many groups of people whose lifestyles are vegetarian do not have the diseases that the rest of the people get - the Amish for example and also other groups....
anyways, I sure hope you get to go into that field - I honestly believe that is the way of the future....
    best wishes

The column and attendant comments are thought-provoking and helpful. There is no single simple diet for every person or every condition, but for every person there is probably a diet that is good for whatever ails him/her.
We are going to use these bodies for a while, so it is good to treat them as well as we can, but as the comments note we should not neglect the spirit. Treating the body well, though, is one part of treating well the soul and spirit.

An interesting take on the subject

Thank you for thinking my poem is awesome.

I must respectfully disagree with many of the points in your column, however. I have spent most of my life studying in one form or another and to one degree or another how the body functions and ways it can break down and how much variation there can be from individual to individual.

For example, in my particular case, I live with several conditions which each in isolation respond better to polar opposite treatments. I experience reactive hypoglycemia, a pre-cursor to diabetes, both of which often respond best to a diet of several smaller meals, each of which is protein adequate, moderate carbohydrate (about 9 grams of carbs for every 7 grams of protein ingested), and low fat, EXCEPT for if you have a high metabolism (such as being an athlete). In that case, you must eat all of your additional calories from "good" fats. Carbohydrate consumption in excess of that in proportion to one's individual protein needs (based on lean body mass and activity level) tends to be detrimental and is likely to worsen the condition over time. (Note: The "Zone" diet is this kind of diet.)

I also have a condition called porphyria, in which the most effective treatment for acute attacks is massive consumption of (often high glycemic index) carbohydrates--for example, 1/2 cup of maple syrup diluted in water (yuk!). Ironically, I went on an extremely low carbohydrate diet for five days as part of a protocol to test for this condition. During those five days I experienced such a severe flare up of symptoms and (at least some was semi-)permanent damage that it took literally over a decade for me to regain much of the capacity I lost during those five days. And still, 14 years later, some of the capacity I had before beginning that test protocol has not (and is therefore not likely) to ever return. In cases more severe than mine, people actually are hospitalized and given intravenous glucose (sugar)!

Also, a note on forms of carbohydrates. People used to (and often do) still think of "simple" carbohydrates as "bad," and "complex" carbodydrates as "better" or "good." The scientific picture is actually more complex than that. There has been testing going on for several years now, and an international database* of results is continually being compiled on what is being called the "glycemic index" of various foods. Some simple carbs are low glycemic, and some complex carb are high glycemic. Just like what is now said "you are what you digest/assimilate" (instead of "you are what you eat"), so too is it with carbohydrates: their value lies in their positive health benefits as they are expressed in your personal metabolism.

The other point that depresses me to say, is that while I believe in the possibility that "full" healing from anything is possible, humanity does not seem to be in a position to be able to access whatever resources are necessary (evolved/enlighted thinking, God's healing power, whatever) for that to occur. Think of a broken bone or a wound. The scar tissue is usually there for life. So with many other forms of damage. Yet why must this distress us? Do we really want immortal bodies in this life? I, for one, do not.

In spite of holding a differing opinions than you in several particulars, I applaud your willingness to speak out on what you believe. I would also encourage you, if you retain your interest in the medical field, to consider one of the "alternate" lines of medicine such as Naturopathy. This system uses methods that are as natural as possible to work with, stimulate, and rebalance (rather than to dominate or overpower) the body's natural systems.

    hello sweetie,
    a very interesting column ...
you are right about the danger of an acid body-territory ...
there are many foods that increase acidity ...
high intake of sugar, coffee, alcohol, proteins (especially meat) etc. contribute to the body's acidity ...
as you say, the best is a balanced, preferrably vegetarian, diet that includes lots of fresh organic fruits and veggies, if possible not cooked too much, or even raw ...
I have adopted a pure raw-food vegan diet for a couple of months to cure myself from a serious lung-disease ... it worked and now I am in perfect health ...
if you like, check out this website :

and, last not least, the true "source" of illness as well as the remedy, that not only cures but heals, is in the spirit ...
