Making AN's count for something - A Rant

So, I got DQ'd from a contest yesterday with no warning, because I forgot to put a silly little saying in the AN (author notes). Some contest hosts think putting a little saying in your AN is proof that you've read or haven't their rules, but this isn't so.

You see, I read the rules and simply forgot to go in and edit my pre-write to add the silly little, non-sensical saying to my AN. Again, I was one of the good little poetesses who actually read the rules, which, by the way, consisted of about 4 lines of the typical bullshit. On the other hand, there are those who manage to zero in on those contest words that say something like "put caramel swirl ice cream is dripping from my nose in your AN so that I know you read my rules..." and do so without even reading the rest of the rules. So where's your proof, Einstein?

I was so pissed off. I got into it with this little girl. You can check out my back-n-forth with her here: http://allpoetry.com/contest/show/2430629?ok=1 It's sort of funny. I was in a bad mood to begin with. I've never had a tiff with anyone on AP before. It probably wasn't worth it, but it sure felt good, and it made me think about what's important and prompted me to write this column.

And another thing......If the contest is anonymous, what's the damn point of telling the authors to put their AP names in the AN's??? That's just brilliant. Why make the contest anonymous in the first place? EDIT: Amaranthine Lover (a silver member) has pointed out that unless you're a gold member you have to make the contest anonymous, thus her reason for requesting authors to put their AP names in the AN spot if the contest host doesn't want the contest to be anonymous, so I accept this reason for non-gold members. Thanks for pointing this out. I didn't know this and appreciate the clarification. I think that's unfair to the paying members on this site!!

Finally, why don't we get back to making the AN's count? I mean, seriously. We use it to put prompts in there to let our contest hosts know what we're writing about. Makes sense, yes?? And just the other day, ok yesterday, I used it, upon the hosts wonderfully thoughtful request, to write an encouraging note with a poem to a little boy who lost his sight from a gunshot wound. These notes and poems are to be forwarded and read to him by his family. How much better can it getthan that? How meaningful. Beats the hell out of "caramel swirl ice cream is dripping from my nose."

Enough said.

Kim

I've had the same happen to me too. I've seen some REALLY dumb AN requirements too. I've gotten to the point where I just skip over any contest that requires those.

You know the whole anonymous contest thing is pretty pointless anyway because if you log out you can see who everyone is anyway.

    Hi Palozoo!
I tried the link but couldn't find your poem on the page. I take it that it's been removed. How shallow! Sorry, I'm not usually that forwards but I thought that this site was all about good poetry. Surely you look at the quality of the poem and not some quirk? If it was my contest I wouldn't DQ a poem for not putting some silly message in the AN. I feel so sorry for you, because I read your poetry and love it. It touches me in a special way, so it's sad to think anyone could DQ a super writer like you. Never mind, here's a bunch of roses to make up.

    Author's Notes

If I take the time to enter a contest, if I wish to win, I am damn sure going to read the rules for that contest. I don't like childish additions like the ones required for this contest and usually just skip the whole thing. BUT, I think anyone holding a contest should recognize the effort of the entrant and give them the courtesy of a PM or something before pulling a poem or not judging it. I understand rules but geeeeze people this ain't rocket surgery ...

I am not a fan of the "prove you read my rules by remembering to write these particular words in your AN." I believe the write will testify for itself whether or not the rules were observed. One can put "the words" in the AN, and still have a write that is clearly not in keeping with the stated intent of the contest.

Perhaps it is more about a sense of control and attendant power to hit the Eject/Delete button than about inviting other writers to share their time and skill on our topic?

Sometimes contest hosts tend to be overbearing with their nonsensical rules and often, quality contestants are dq'd because of a simple oversight.--I've had this happen to me also as I'm sure many other AP contestants shared the same misfortune---learn from the experience and be happy in the knowledge that it is not worth the anger or aggravation that it causes.
Ap has members of all ages and degrees of maturity---I now have to laugh when I see a long, negative critique of one of my submissions only to discover the contest host was 13 years old --It used to aggravate me, but now I accept it for what it is!
I'm glad you spoke your mind, however and I'm sure it made you feel better!--Take care & God Bless

Agree totally, AN's should be for the prompt, and any additional information the Author of the poem wants to include, not to satisfy immature minds and make them feel popular...

Dear Sis, this rant is well justified... what is this site about anyway!

I went back and read all the comments made back and forth and I felt that there were a few that was unnecessary and uncalled for!

For example... "all 17 years old should be shot" come on now who is the adult there? I think that person was taking it alittle too far!

We are all here because we enjoy reading and writing poetry and our words are important to us because it is a part of who we are... so when someone DQ's us for such a little thing like forgetting to put some made up junk in our notes without warning it can piss us off! The AN is for us to put what "WE" want to put in it!

That "person" is infamous for insulting teenagers. I don't know what his problem is. He's been on my block list for at least a year now.

  • You took the words right outta my mouth, Mum. It really is ridiculous, but I totally laughed my head off!

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm so knew at this, that I have to go back and edit alot of times because I missed it the first time. And I do read the rules. I just can't remember everything the first time around. Thank you for sharing this column with us.

I agree that all the silly things required to be put in the AN is such a waist of time. It is not only another thing for the entrant to remember, but it is also another thing for the holder to have to remind you of or DQ you for if it isn't done.

I think it is plain enough, that if we don't follow the rules, either remind us or just DQ. Why just add to the number of reasons for being reminded or DQ'd. I can be a little more understanding when it is a kid doing it, but when it is an adult, I feel it is a power trip.

Thanks for saying what a lot of us have been thinking.
    Good Job
    Don

  • Haha. I have been DQ'd for the same. I find it silly and usually something added by kids. I dont worry about it too much and try not to think that they will be running the country when I need my social security check for Cat Food and Depends.

    Great job.

    Mike

Very good point here Authro's Notes are, as it says, the author's notes on the poem so it is very unfairto have to put what the judge/host of the contest wants you to.

    How ironic.....hehe .>>>>

I just reminded a person of the Rules, because when he reviewed my write, I went to his page to return the favor, and there was a comment from the Host...

..Read the Rules!..........how rude......at least say.....please do not forget to read all of the Rules for your Authors Notes.....or something a little more kind..>>>

    http://allpoetry.com/poem/4929715

.....and yes, I agree AN's are for what matters....not for making sure someone place *santa fell on his butt and slid back to the north pole* ....just to make sure they read all of the Rules.......a simple reminder via contest page *send note to all entrants* in contest will suffice

    Rants

I go along with everything you say Kim I had 4 poems one after the other D.Q.d in the same pre-write contest with no reason given or apparent. My main rant is the obsessive habit
of the "No pre writes allowed" syndrome if the poem is relevant what the hell.I have to plead to be allowed to enter
any one of my 200 pre-writes in a prohibitive contest
I know everybody is in the same boat, but it's one unneccesary boat too many. George.....

    Hi Kim, Um...
sometimes there is a reason for wanting the name in the AN,like if the same poet is entering multiple poems, etc... contests don't always let you know who is who, unless you're a gold member, they don't.

My mother always use to say,
opinions are like assholes~~~everybodys got one.
I say to each their own.
You have just as much right to voice your opinion as anyone else.
    Love you, Bell

I think you need a hug sweetie.
I know how you feel and exactly what you mean. LOL At my age, I'm lucky to remember which poem I want to post in what contest even if they aren't prewrites.
I feel bad just asking people to post their prompt in my contests but I'd drive myself crazy trying to figure out what they are writing for otherwise. People post some really strange things and think you should know what prompt they are using.
Maybe we should form our own group or something and host contests for people with none of the stupid rules?
And who really lets carmel swirl icecream drip from their nose anyway? Well, I know a couple of folks that might but they aren't site members.
Love you dear and thanks for sharing your rant. We know exactly how you feel.

Oh yea, I almost forgot, I ask people sometimes for their username because only gold members can choose if they want the names shown. Us lowely members have no choice.

I agree with you in a lot of ways. I really do. I never DQ anyone without explaining first and at times even give them time to answer back. To let me know if I am just missing something. Which is always possible.

I think that use of the AN about the little blind child is wonderful. I think that would be one inspirational write. We should see a whole lot more of that around here.

Personally, I would rather not know who is writing for my contests. To me that would be more fair. I like to see who wins after I have made my choices. When the names pop up after I have chosen the winner I am shocked sometimes... sometimes I am not. Some of you guys have very distinct writing and I can guess just by that.

It is more fun for me not to know.

Still, I think it is only nice to let someone know you have a problem with their writings. I try and speak truthfully but I do not try and be insulting. However, people have been known to take words in the wrong way.

And some people... they are born to get mad at anyone, anytime, no matter what is said or done.

So rant away my friend. We here understand where you are coming from.

aaaaaa, a tempest in a teapot, but I do see your point here!! well said, indeed!

  • the only reason why I have people put their user name or link to their profile is because I am a silver member and can't view who they are. I like to see who enters my contest. That way, I know that they read the rules because then I know who they are. I usually give a suggestion first so they can change it. If not, then they get a reason for removal and then they are removed.

That's something I didn't know, so I thank you for clarifying it for me. It's certainly your choice for NOT wanting to run an anonymous contest. I think Kevin needs to let all paying members be able to make that choice when running contests. That's a bunch of bullshit.

Aww, I sympathize Kim. Been there myself. Some of the contest quirks at AP leave one scratching your head. There are on given standards all contests have to follow beyond things like adult contests have to be labeled and there has to be a certain amount of points. So we all get those times when it goes ouch.

I hate when you get DQ and the host doesn't even say why. Hope writing this helped.
