True Emo

Emo was become an over used misleading stereotype. its not about the cloths or the hair, it's about the people...this is about the True Emos.
What is emo anyways? technically "emo" is short for emotional, but do people look at it that way? No. When someone says "that person looks so emo", or "You are so emo", and even, "those skinny jeans are awesome!" to them being emo is all based on looks! and everyone does it! most of all i have found are the people that call themselves emo, not the preps, not the jocks, not the nerds or whoever else, but the "emos" themselves. everyone falls victim to this stereotyping, that is just how humans are. it's a psychology/sociology thing. anyways....back to my point. emo has become based on the look. and what is the look?

skinny jeans
black anything
eyeliner
the side bangs over one eye
strait black/red/green/purple hair
cutting
poetry

these are just a few examples, but there is so much more that is plastered to the emo lable. again, everyone follows these cultural standards; preps, jocks, regular people, nerds, and especially "emos" themselves. there are so many posers out there today that no one really knows what it means to be emo anymore!

A true emo, doesn't have a closet full of hottopic. a true emo, doesn't wine and cry about their "horrible, terrible, traumatic lives" to friends and anyone else. a true emo, won't show off their scars. a true emo, won't bitch about how they are being labeled and stereotyped by everyone else because, "they just don't understand".

No. A true emo, will painstaking strive to hide the truth just so that no one will know that they are in pain and need help. A true emo, is emotionally beaten and bruised and they won't tell you. yes emos cut, but unlike the posers, they won't show you. these people would rather die of heat stroke from wearing a long sleeved shirt in the middle of summer in the Sahara dessert, than let someone find out that they cut. being emo is being scared of who you are, and whats happened to you. whether its emotional abuse, physical abuse, rape, not knowing how to handle death, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, some loved one doing these things, being abandoned, being chronically depressed beyond the help of anti-depressants, and so many other things, true emos don't want anyone to know. True emos walk around you with a smile on, they joke, they try to socialize hoping that no one will notice that bruse, or the cut, or that their face is red from crying.

Being a true emo isn't a labal, its not a stereotype, and its not an industry. Being a true emo is about trying beat the fucked up life that you're in. its trying to cope and find help.

in my opinion...an emo poser is someone who walks around wearing their expensive hottopic cloths, showing off the cuts on your arm, whining about how horrible your parents and everyone else is to you because "no one understands what you are going through". Emo posers are the ones complaining about how people label them. guess what...if you don't want to be labeled as an emo than stop living up to that stereotype!

A true emo actually hurts. a true emo needs help. a true emo is the one smiling trying to find that one friend who might understand and finally help them cope...

yes this is one huge rant...i will most likely revise this later for the sake that this will offend people because i am just venting and not really backing up my point. anyways...let me know what you think either way.

Well, sorry for being a smart ass, but not quite.
"Emo", Emotional Hardcore, or Emotional Rock was a genre of music. A spin-off of punk, actually, involving songs with personal, painful lyrics, usually violent and loud upon the ears.
The whole modern aesthetic (dark hair, skinnies, stick straight hair filled with hairspray...) is known as Scene, despite the modern definition of Scene being bleach hair, scantly clad, waif-ish girlies who wear neon colors and live on myspace.
Misconceptions are what have lead to the chains such as Hot Topic to be "Emo" or even "Scene" in the eyes of the public.
    But...
Emo is not a mindset, that would be depression or trend following, in the case of some, which goes hand in hand with the wonderful genre known as Emotional Hardcore.
    Have a decent article: http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spring03/Seawell/history.htm

Ha this was brillant. You have told a lot of truth in this write, rant or not. You are right. If you were a true "emo" you wouldn't glamorize your pain and self infliction with black eyeliner, whiney pop music, and overly cliche poetry.

You shouldn't worry if this is going to offend people. Some people need to come to the realization that they need to wake up from their undying fantasy that they are trapped in.

  • i never realy knew what emo was about and truth be told i was one of those people you were talking about, following the sterotype.after reading this i realize i was wrong.im glad you ranted or people like me would still be ignorant

I love it!!!!!! And I agree with everything you said, every bit of it.
However, want to add that most of those "emo" children out there now aren't just emo posers, but posers to steampunk and punk itself.
You are funny when you rant, and this whole thing made my whole day better.
