So, today I found out I have the oppurtunity to participate in a local 'pow wow' this upcoming week. Apparently, in NC there is a surprising amount of Mete/Ojibwa families then I thought before, due to how my tribe is based up north going all the way into the borders and heart of Canada. We originaly did migrate from Virginia, so I'm guessing there could be a lot of people still here, but I found is shocking that the women who contacted me was from a full blood family. Wtf? Ok, Native Americas/First Nation people who are completly FULL BLOODED is so rare to find outside of a reservation, seriously. My dad was next in line for chief, but since he was given away when he was born, my uncle took over for the Manitoba reserve. My dad still had a chance to become second in command at the Eagle Head Mission Reserve, but he just didn't see himself fit for it, due to how he did grow up with a all american family, and is just now learning about the tribe itself.
I'm half white, but looking at me you can tell that I'm obviously mixed with something. I do have a lot of pride for my people, and I'm extreemly passionet about the rights we deserve. Unlike the African Americans, and other minorites that the US goverment have severly wronged, Native people and First Nation people have NOT been officialy and publicly apoligized to. Families are still fighting for our ancestors lands, and all the Goverment wants to do is shut us the hell up. That's not right. The only fucking tribes who are nationally accepted and paid off, are the ones who bought into advertisment and sold our traditions to fucking tabaco companies, base ball teams, and other meaningless logo's.
My people are to proud to do that.
I was offered to have the place as one of the Judges for Traditional Dance, but I don't think I'm going to accept. I do aprieciate being nominated, but it's only because of who my uncle and grandfather was, and since I know neither, I'd just rather not. I myself was raised "white" and "american", and besides the short time when I was little, I haven't been fully exposed to my tribe and all of the activities, little and huge, that they do on a regular basis. I will go, yeah, but I'd feel wrong, and kinda' stupid trying to judge somebody on something I barely know anything about.
