A little column about Christmas

Joint effort between myself, Immortal Obscurity and Daughter of Christ.
My bit

The true value of Christmas has been lost in a sea of commerclisation and advertising. People should remember the true meaning of Christmas, that of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, His son, our saviour.

But people don't. They are seduced by the latest 'must have' gadgets, the parties at friends' houses. They take His name in vain, near-constantly. In schools too, education focusses away from Christianity, on both sides of the Pond, and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Instead, it focusses on Islam, on Hinduism, on Sikhism. How, I ask, can they be relavent to a soul trying to follow His path? How can learning about the Ganges help somebody become closer to God?

Immortal Obscurity's bit:

So many people are caught up in the 'spirit of the season', that they stress too much over things like shopping and finding that perfect gift. The legend of Santa Claus is a fun aspect for young children, but as we grow older, we need to remember that the real reason we celebrate Christmas is to commemorate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

The secular aspects of the holiday are just another part of attempts to make Christmas more politically-correct, so as not to 'offend' anyone. But how is keeping our culture and celebrating our holiday offensive? I mean, Muslim women are allowed to vote while wearing hijabs, yet the Bible has been banned from most schools, and Christians aren't allowed to even say, "Merry Christmas", for political correctness' sake.

Ten years ago, in Ontario, Canada, the mayor of Toronto sparked a debate when he decided, in the name of political correctness, to change the Christmas tree to a "holiday tree", so that Christmas would be 'unoffensive' to everyone else. The Christian people were in an uproar, for obvious reasons: After all, the Jewish community would be pretty annoyed, if we just called their Menorah a 'candlestick', as would the Muslims, if we called their hijabs simply, 'scarves'. People don't realize that, in bending over backward to please everyone else, Western culture is becoming obsolete, and its people are slowly losing their sense of identity.

Daughter of Christ's bit:

In the so-called spirit of Christmas when it's a time to pay homage to God for sending His son Jesus to save us, the majority of people seem to have forgotten why we even celebrate! It's SO much more than giving out gifts and being broke to spend on family members and friends! Yes, family is important but what's more important is the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

No one else could've paid for our sins and set us free from all of our many iniquites but Him! Not Buddha, nor Mohhumad, nor Allah, but Christ Jesus. So many people are caught up in the lastest technology, the lastest fashions that somehow we've forgotten what really matters! People don't even care anymore! They blasphimize the name of the Holy One without a care! I think it's time to regain that respect back, don't you?

This really jumped out at me, and showed me that people really AREN'T celebrating Christmas for what it really is. I just don't like it that sometimes people say "Merry Christmas" to everyone, in the belief that people would take it in a good way... but otherwise that, I agree that you have all made some great points. I am not even buying gifts for my family, but my mom is buying me yarn and I am MAKING them all presents! Won't that be fun. I have finished some, but not all.

But, my greatest gift is seeing my dad this Sunday.
I haven't seen him since February.

I hate how holidays have been commercialized, despise it.
It is about the fact that it was the day Jesus Christ was born.
My family are quite religious, well most of us. I might not go to church every sunday etc.But I do like to have our christmas based around the celebration of the birth of christ, I respect it, as it is always how it has been

When I have children, they will know why we celebrate christmas and I mean the real reason

Thank you for writing and sharing this, it is important and needs to be shared
