New search form for your poems @ contest prewrites, featured box

Instead of a drop down box containing all of your poems, it now displays your most recent 75 poems, and a search box to search the titles of your poems.
As always, a fair number of minor bugfixes were included as well. Please let me know if you have any issues with the new system / etc. Thank you allpoets!

will not accept a long title

I tried to search for one of my poems which is called- The rare case of the walled up witch- it would only accept up to UP so this caused me frustration

Thanks so much for putting in that "all" option if we want to look at all our poems. It works really well. You are the BEST!

Thanks for listening to us and acting so quickly!

Kevin,I appreciate that you are always looking into making ap more user friendly but please could we return to the old drop down where all the poetry could be found,at least for say a month to give all the poets chance to organize their poetry so they can easily find their poems? Many thanks,Yvette

I prefer it the old way, with all older poems appearing in the box. The searchbox is all right, but the old way was much better. This was not a positive improvement. I think Artis has some good suggestions in his post.

Kevin . . . thank you for all the hard work you do here on AP, helping to make it the most user friendly poetry site on the net . . . however, I'm not crazy about this latest change, it does seem to put limitations on those of us who post on here often . . . I found it to be more useful when I was able to locate older material at a moments notice.

As long as older poems can be found, then it's all good.

I prefer it the way it was, especially since I have a bad memory and can never remember my titles

So is there no way to access my old poems, unless I can remember the titles? That is scary. I have way too many on here to remember for a prewrite contest, or for other times when I may need to find another poem. I like that the sight is constantly being improved, a lot of good things have been done lately; but I am curious what the benefit for this change is.

I ran into a 150 poem limit months ago, and deleted all but those that I wished to keep online. The older ones were not being read anyway, and many of them were not very good.

that's wonderful for your weekend writers, but I have over two thousand three hundred poems here, and remembering the titles is mind boggling, thus I sit and scroll like some ancient biblical scholar to find what i need for a prewrite, or a newspaper colu

column or for a request from a fellow poet or friend. This can take hours when the need for some work is long. The alphabetical setup was wonderful, and granted ease of discovery, why would anyone need to search that often for the last 75 written, I wrote at least twenty today alone. They are fresh in my mind, but that poem from 2001 is lost in the fog of what you soon will also know, short term memory malfunction. Streamlining is great for overwieght jockeys and fast cars but poetry collections should be archived in alphabetical order, in case the poet dies, so that relatives , friends and fellow poets can get to his/her works and print or publish them. Yeah I know, I should be saving them elsewhere, but you are and have been my library for years. I don't think they make a disc large enough for all my works. i currently have over 4,000 poems, over half stored here. Anyway that is just my opinion, just one lone poet spending long nights perusing what was easy two days ago. but there are many others with hundreds of poems on here, and your old system made it so easy to find relics, and gems. Ah, well...thanks for all the improvements otherwise, you are a grand host Kevin but occasionally your magic wand is an ax! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~Artis---p.s. why can't the drop box, move from the first 75 to the next 75 and so on, thereby saving such excrutiating searches??

Yeah, they do make a disc "large" enough for all of your poems. What sort of burning program do you have? Nero 7 should do just fine. You can burn data discs as well as audio and video discs with that. I have only posted less than a handful of my poems here on allpoetry, and the rest I've saved to the D drive, printed off a copy and put into folders, and also backed up onto disc, just to be safe. And, I'm glad I did. A few months ago, we got a really nasty virus, and our computer crashed. We lost everything on the D drive, our large drive,(250 G, and almost everything on our C drive, our small hard drive, (40 G. We took our tower to a local computer repair store, as we feel that Best Buy, although an awesome store, is a joke when it comes to fixing computers. Their "Geek Squad" is nothing more than ppl who can basically just do a disc recovery or reformat your computer, they have no real training in computer technology.
So, we took our computer tower to a local computer store, and they did disc recoveries on both our hard drives, and fortunately, recovered most everything, but it wouldn't have mattered that much anyway, bcuz all of the really important stuff, we had backed up onto disc.

I like the search function but not the 75 limit.... If someone has many poems posted here it's so not easy to remember all the titles, Kevin! I prefer the old system with the search box option. . Thanks for the search function though.

It was MUCH better the other way.

It's a real pain to use now as I have to have two pages up at a time in order to do a search for the url for the poem I want, and I often can't remember exactly which poem I need, and since I can't see the titles, I have to search through all of them to find the one I want.

I can see how having the long lists might be a problem, but I didn't have THAT many poems posted here. I gather some people have a thousand poems and I am sure that would be a problem.

As far as the comment about people keeping track of their poems, I had a computer crash and lost everything. The only poems I have now are posted here, and there's no list or index of them anywhere else. Most of them are published and in books, but I would have to search through several hundred books to find the one I wanted in many cases. That was a dumb comment from whomever said it.

I kind of liked it how it was.. only because I tried to enter a few of my older poems and didn't see them there.

I think I preferred it as it was. I wonder if there are any others in the same situation, but since I write a lot and have many poems on here, it sometimes happens that I forget the title of a certain poem I'd like to enter in a contest. The complete drop-down menu helped with that. But maybe it's just me.

I'll confess that a big motivation for changing it was that showing the complete drop down for poets with >200 poems was causing site slowdowns and crashes So hopefully this will be faster too + hopefully it's cope-able.

If you come up with a suggestion for a 3rd way to do it, please let me know

That's understandable. After all, it's not the site's fault some people don't keep track of their own poetry

That sounds great Kevin! Is there a way that we could maybe have a feature where we can alphabetize them? It could prove helpful when we are looking for a particular poem. Thanks a lot!
