Subjecting Yourself To Other’s Comments

Please keep in mind when placing people on your block list.

First off let me start by saying everyone is entitled to their own opinions and what not, correct? And that in this country we have the freedom of speech. If I’m going to be commenting you, I’m not going to be kissing your ass to do so. I’m going to tell you what I really think, whether or not I think it’s good. If I leave something you deem is negative, it's not. It's merely a suggestion, and an opinion. Take it, or leave it.

Regardless if people have given you comments about how good it is, and if I don’t particularly care for it, I’ll tell you, it’s not really within my taste. Who knows, maybe it’ll grow on me, and you’re one of my new favorites. Recently, I have been placed upon two people’s block list because I told them what I really thought of their poem. I didn’t put them down, I told them something positive, made a few suggestions, asked them to message me when they edit so that I can re-read and re-comment. I didn't put them down in any fashion, and what happens? Ignore list!

If you don’t want to subject yourself to other people’s comments when there is a strong possibilities that they won’t like it, please don’t enter it into contest, especially if the judge specified that they would be really honest, regardless of previous comments, or any possible “bias” remarks. Be courteous, and if you put someone on your block list, then please, have a creditable reason to do so!

You show so many, manys points in this. Your one of the only ones... actually--THE--only one that's told directly how the blocking this is. i'm not on a blocked list... yet... nor have i ever blocked anyone. it doesn't really seem to be a sensible thing to do--when someone tells you what is right or wrong with a poem, then they're merely telling you, as you said (and i VERY STRONGLY AGREE) their opinion. i've gotten several comments that kind of hurt me, but then i know what i have to fix, so it all works out in the end!
    very good job on this!

I totally agree. People sometimes just take things the wrong way. I would much rather someone tell me they don't like something (provided they have a valid reason) than for them to tell me they love it. It's one thing to be cruel and put them down, but it's another to be genuinely honest and tell them how you think they could make something great even better. I applaud everyone who is able to take Constructive Critisim (constructive being the opparative word here.) But yeah, so I totally agree.

Sometimes a suggestion can be construed as negative feedback. I try to never be "negative", but sometimes the tone is misconstrued. I feel that critical analysis is a positive thing, and would much rather recieve honest feedback, than "ass-kissing" or "ego-stroking". If trophies and accolades are what makes some people most content, then they won't understand (or encourage) suggestions from others. I , personally, respect those whose intent is mainly focused on critical analysis, most.

    Great Idea!

I think that you just about covered it all, if you submit a poem then you are at the hands of the judge. They aren't always going to have mercy on you. So get used to it!

    Amen sister!

I think that anyone who is going to enter into a contest and knowing that the critique is going to be an un-bias, honest opinion then they need to be a little more receptive and maybe ask some questions about why you felt that way and try and get some suggestions...Granted I have a hard time swallowing rude and disrespectful comments, but as long as they are not as such I can handle it. Not one single piece of poetry on this website is perfect, otherwise it would be in a published book and the author would not be a member of this site, they would be on tour. Please take criticism with a grain of salt and take pleasure in the fact that not everyone has the same taste in poetry as you do. Depending on how someone reads makes a lot of difference in the flow of a poem as well. Know, that if you are extremely sensitive to criticism, then a contest is probably going to only discourage you and you will resist writting. *steps down from soap box* Have a great day!

I don't ever think that there is a reason

to leave anything negative on someones work (that they worked hard to create)
granted as long as it's not utterly horrible
and your just adding to the list of horrible comments the poem already has...
I never left any one anything negative on thier poems because this isn't a site for bashing or critisizing anyones poetry ..
its a site where we have trophys and points to make being a member on this site more rewarding...
I don't think that anyone should leave the site due to mean comments on thier work
that they are just trying to share with everyone here...
no one should ever have to leave here so upset that they had to block anyone because it bothered them so much....

i would never leave anything negative on a person's work. the most negative thing i've left is a solid critique. honestly, i understand that people work really hard on their work, but please, do understand this is a writing community for people all over the world who have very distinct and different tastes.
