Honestly, I've hosted about 5 contest so far, and almost all of them has been failures. I'm not blaming anyone here on AP, no, far from it...I'm just offering a few...guidelines that would be good to follow.
There is no such thing as 'crap' poetry...it's all in the eye of the beholder. Please, when entering a contest...
* read all the rules correctly and fully. Remember it is the contest holder that does all the work of making sure that the rules are followed, you should help them out. Even if the contest holder missed someone not following the rules, leave a comment to help the writer (of the poem) remember to put in the requirements.
* take the time to enter something worthwhile. (if anything, at least to you) I'm sure anybody who's held a contest can tell you they've gotten a bit of 'bad' poetry! The contest holder has worked really hard for those points, don't disappoint them.
* comment on poetry. Help others out,and get points for it...get reviews in response!
* comment on contest. Tell the contest holder, "Oh, this is a great contest", even if you don't mean it!
* try to contribute. Whether it's adding points, poetry, or comments. We must all help each other.
Currently, that is all that I can think of, but if anything else, this is a community for everyone...lets help each other reach out for someone with a fresh voice, and new ideas.
When entering contest, it would be smart to follow a few contest etiques.
