I'm writing a book called "Regimented Nonconformity". The basic point of the book is that nonconformity and conformity are just two means to the same end: giving popular trends and the whims of others way more power over you than they deserve.
How do you let teens know that they are each unique and special just the way they are... and don't need to prove it with dress, fashions, or interests?
How do you make someone think for himself or herself?
Is there an answer to nonconformity?

Nonconformity is a contradiction in itself. Because one way or another, your gonna end up doing atleast ONE thing everyone else is doing. The only way nonconformity will ever happen is if everyone but 1 person is obliterated from the face of the earth. Because as long as there are more than 1 persons, there ARE going to be trends to follow.
So your question of "How do you let teens know that they are each unique and special just the way they are?" is a good question. One that I am sure people have been trying to answer for eons. (oh yes, i said it)
Life wasn't supposed to be about knowing who you are from the get-go. You have to discover and learn as you grow. Thats why (thank God) we are teenagers, half of what we do won't matter in 20 years. If all of lifes questions were so easily answered, I think we would all end up killing ourselves becasue we wouldn't have anything to debate on.
If people REALLY want to be different do their own thing, they'll do just that; their own thing. They'll do it no matter what anyone else has to say about it.
you have your questions answered by now I'm sure. This is just my opinion and it shouldn't be taken seriously. -
Everyone is extremely unique.... just like everyone else. This is a hard concept to grasp when your looking at the world today. Everyone... just wants to be some one....
I just let them know that they are who they are, and hope they learn from my (and other people's) mistakes, in hopes that they won't have to go and figure it out for themselves later in life. Keeping in mind that it's too late change what you did, and who you used to be... hmm... if that makes any sense at all.
Hahaha... though, I am only 15, people tell me I'm wise for my years. So I can't say I've learned as much as others (experience wise) in my life time so far, but I think I've pretty much got myself figured out, and that's who I am. So I think, why would I want to be... something I'm not...?
ahahhah, right well... I don't want to go on a rant now. I'm a very opinionated person, and once I get rolling, I just get carried away. So yeah... XD

no thats EXACTLY what i was looking for
ive got a bunch of myspace replies to these questions to and I think I have a solid idea of my opinion on the matter
You cant MAKE people think for themselves... its even more a ludicrous idea than the idea of nonconformity itself.
If we want society to function rationally we must ALL want it to... and function rationally ourselves. As long as there are a great many people making decisions based on a sad desire to contradict what they know, there will always be subcultures, and the challenges they bring to our youth
