Poetry Writing Strategies

This is a column to help all poets of all ages improve their writing skills.
Top Tips:

1. Basic skills are very important such as grammer and puncuation. Without these readers find it hard and unenjoyful to read. Simply by re-checking your work before submitting could give you more comments and reads.

2. Word usage. Using words that you don't necisarly know the meaning of can make your write appear confusing and meaningless to the readers. Stick with words you know and are comfortable with to ensure your poem is understandable.

3. Rhyming/Non Rhyming. People differ and specialise in different types of poetry writing. For example, some people find Rhyming a easy and successful way of making a poem. However others find it difficult to find words which are alike. My tip if rhyming is to find the word you want to get a rhyme for, go through the alphabet and for each letter think of obvious words which may rhyme with your original word.

4. Interesting. Make the reader get a sense of an emotion. IE, make them feel happy or sad and pull them into your poem, get them involved. It is possible to make the reader believe they are in this situation with you and this pleases them much more.

5. Read other writes. By reading other people's writes you get inspiration and ideas for poems of your own. Also you could use the AP classes or practice pages to help you with creations.

6. Use yourself as a guideline. I find using my own personal thoughts and feelings helps me to create a good and meaningful poem. This could be anything from love to death to friends to ambitions. You tend to write with more knowledge when you write about something you have experianced. You can even make peace with yourself through writing about tough times.

And finally, enjoy writing. It shouldn't be a task or hard work, it should be fun, enlightening and stimulising.

Best of luck.
