What is up with poetry contests today?

This is something that some not all contest holders should look at. It might help the ones who are meaner than most other contest holders. Especially if they run in to an angry poet.
People running contests as of late make me mad. Not everybody is like what I describe next. Just within the last 2 weeks I was kicked out of 2 or 3 contests. One contest I was kicked out of because my poem was not up to par. Now to me that is a STUPID reason to kick a persons poem out of your contest. I mean if isn't the greatest poem in the world just don't give it a trophy. Don't kick it out! Sheesh! Another one of my poems got kicked out because she thought it didn't have any feeling. Another STUPID reason to kick a poem out of the contest. I mean people instead of being mean and kicking people out of contests for STUPID reasons just don't give them a trophy. That is the simple truth! And a lot less people get hurt. A lot less people that think their poetry is crap because you kicked it out of the contest on STUPID pretenses!

Now this paragraph is directed to those people who cuss at the people in their contests because they don't like their poetry! There is no need for cussing. That just makes the entrant madder than a hornet. And then they voluntarily remove themselves from the contest. Nobody needs to be told that their poem is a piece of crud. But some people use another word for crud on here. Nobody needs to be told they write like a 6 year old. Nobody needs to be told they trampled all over a subject. On here we write to each of our own ability. If you can't say nothing nice about what is written don't say anything at all. Because being rude gets you no where. Sheesh!

I agree with your second paragraph. Comments should be constructive and using profanity or blunt insults is not useful to you or your writing. That is just childish and useless.

However, as for being disqualified from contests, I believe it is the contest host’s right to remove a poem that does not correspond with the contest rules or match what the host wanted to read for their contest. As for me, one of the main reasons I disqualify entries that do not follow my contest rules is that other can have a chance and the posts that are not meeting my standards do not fill up the entry limit. In my opinion, from the contest enterer standpoint, I don’t mind being disqualified from a contest (it has happened twice) but I know there are other contests out there waiting for me. If you’re not satisfied with the way someone is holding a contest, just avoid their contests and look for something that suits you and your writing a bit better. Also, an Allpoetry contest is just an Allpoetry contest… it’s not a life or death situation.

Try not to be discouraged. Poetry writing is about self-improvement. Everyone can grow as a poet. Learn from your mistakes, heed constructive criticism, pay attention to the contests you enter, and don’t give up. Consider those negative comments (not the obvious bashing) and reflect on your writing from the readers view. What can be improved? Have I spelled everything correctly? What seems unneeded? Am I following all the contest rules? If you think about your writing from the readers standpoint, you’ll have a better understanding of your poetry and why you receive the comments you catch.

This was an interesting column. It stated your opinion quite well.

    Hmmmmm.....

    ....a terrific message ~

...however, since it was my contest which you speak of, I am a bit shocked that you would stoop to this level and replay EVERYTHING you and I talked about here today for the past 5 hours ~

It is not a secret that many Poets have disagreed with my reviews....and frankly, after the contest you were in today, and then DQ'd...and then allowed the re-enter, and then DQ'd again, and then allowed to re-enter because I had to tell you how to spell *you're*, well, I felt you had a valid arguement, but now, I am going to ask that you not waste your time entering into anymore of my contests again ~

This will settle that problem ~

I am a Fair Judge and always have been, and always will be ~

Am I going to Cater to your every need....no ~

Have I EVER said ONE curse word to ANY Poet.....No way...and I dare you to prove me wrong ~

Am I going to review your work as I see fit....yes ~

Am I going to try to work on the many issues Poets have brought to my attention....yes ~

Am I going to defend my right to DQ you at any given time....you bet ~

Am I going to change the way I run my contests because a bunch of Poets have cursed me via IM's, told me I was a horrible Judge, told me I wasn't fit to Judge, told me I didn't know what proper poem grammar was, told me I have gone overboard on my Judging.....and much more.......NO ~

Are you going to continue to try and prove your Writes are the best by writing incredible Poetry....I sure hope so ~

I know TravelinFool did not mention my name as the problem contest holder, but it is not a secret if you have been around AP today to see the other Link/s placed on AP all in reference to my contests ~

Kevin is a supporter of my contests, and he gave the go-ahead for me to create something that would be beneficial for everyone ~

Obviously he felt I was capable enough, or he would not have donated points himself to keep this Sequence of Contests Alive!

I am not a Professional....and frankly, I don't know of anyone on AP who is ~

Heck....I've been published 4 times and I have a Novel published as well.....but does that make me a Professional...or King of AP....NO ~

I am just a Poet trying to do something good for AP ~

I have spent the last two and a half months right here in front of this PC doing nothing but trying to keep Poets entertained and offer them something worth their time to partake in ~

If you are not happy with the way I Judge....then please don't enter and allow yourself to get upset when I Judge harshly.....or......just start your own Link about how cruel you think I am as a Judge ~

Now THAT, should get attention ~

    Peace,

    Bear ~
