Video Poetry!

I'm very excited to announce our newest feature - adding a video to your poems? "Wait," you say, "surely this is for gold members only?" Nope, it's for all members! Dust off that webcam, and record yourself now!

Next week, we'll be having a video poetry slam contest for a 3 month gold membership, so start practicing!

Look for details at the bottom of the poem edit page, or watch some (mostly by kevin, so far).
I hope you're as excited as I am about this The first few videos are of me being silly, but hopefully we'll have some real drama queens out there soon! Don't worry, we all look stupid, it's fun

There's a link to the poem video page on the main 'Poetry' menu at the top, and on the right side from the other poetry browsing pages.

Trying to get the upload process can be frustrating sometimes, so try to help each other out in the forums. I had some problems with the audio being static on some of my videos, but I just did it a few times and it worked.

See you soon!

I got the camera for Christmas. I have had to many people ask to hear me read out loud and many who want to see what I look like currently. Why, I am not sure. It would be nice to have some instructions to go with this. Once I post on Utube or do I have to post on utube. What is next. I can get it on to my computer, but I need help from there. Please ...

    Prison Time

You know what I think is funny, is that some day, some minor will slip a sexual innuendo into a vid/poem/farce/wasteoftime and it will get missed by the lazy moderators here, and Kevin, as site owner/creator/destroyer will end up in prison for distribution of kiddie porn.

    Nifty.

    Sorry, but I have to...

Absolutely opposed. I think it destroys the point of the site. Yeah, let's do a poetry slam, in video, because that's a GREAT way to honor the poetry, and not ourselves...

(If you don't catch the sarcasm here, you really are stupid)

Remember what video did to the radio star? Or to the radio?

    It'll do the same here.

i am not completely opposed to this feature on principle. different forms of media and art are increasingly being combined, and making it an option for people to incorporate other forms of expression is neat.

but i do have to say having pictures and/or audio available seems more practical to me than video, to augment and add other layers to the poem rather than distracting from or replacing it. a picture can help build an atmosphere and presentation that reinforces the piece and audio would offer a chance to experience poetry conveyed both with spoken words and text laid carefully on the page. but you cannot watch a video and read the poem at the same time. it is not supplental, but rather a seperate entity. like others, i cannot follow the logic of having this option available to all but not a picture or an audio reading of the poem.

also, as others have brought up, i think having videos on here creates a regulatory headache. there definetly needs to be a strong structure set up to deal with the huge potential for dangerous forms of abuse before it is introduced.

finally, i agree that having a big frozen frame at the top of the page is a big distractions, especially on top of the ads that are already there so that there is a lot to weed through for those just interested in the poem itself. perhaps there should be a link just above or better yet below the poem to "watch the video of this poem" in order to be less invasive, especially for those who don't want to be bothered by this feature. also, it seems to me video would gobble up a lot of space on this site, slowing it down a lot for those of us with slower connections who won't be able to benefit from this feature but will have to struggle to make our way though a site full of memory-hogging videos. perhaps there should be a seperate site where the videos are stored, which can easily be linked to poems by means mentioned above?

i think its a cool idea but there are a lot of serious issues that need to be addressed.

It's alright... But are the videos being scanned before/after being posted?Who knows what someone could put with a poem. And there are many young kids on this site...What if one of them had stumbled upon an inappropriate video?

There ARE people on this site that probably shouldn't be. (In my opinion at least.) If we're keeping this feature, then in my opinion the videos should definately be scanned at the very least; before being posted.

This topic brings up good points: http://allpoetry.com/board/topic/268537308

I think this is fantastic. If you don't like the idea, you don't have to use it, or look at it. And if you want to read a poem and not watch the video, just don't click play, it's that simple.

My only suggestion would be to have the poems below in a scroll sort of method or have the video go with you as you scroll, because I find myself following along and then you can't watch.

I say from the page to the stage. It's my business. I perform poetry as often as I write it and have for the past fourteen years. I actually pays my bills. LOL Go for it. It's a feature, an option, let the consumer choose. If it's not your thing, steer clear of it. I don't have a cam, but I do plan to get one, and this feature speeds up that shopping adventure for me. Thanks Kevin!

    Much LOVE ♥

Thank you for making this available to ALL!

I like the video option. Don't know if I would ever get technically up to snuff enough to post one but I would like to -- at least one -- so people could meet me. I was just accused of sounding "Draconian" by the dragon lady herself yesterday and I can only chuckle, knowing she must project her own personality onto others.

P.S. Thanks for upgrading our features, hopefully we could get graphics from other sites on our accounts here too for non-members that would be great.
P.S. What is the pricing again for Membership? I'm in Canada. (Did you ever cross over the memberships? Just wondering.

Kevin, you've always made this site lively. I have spent a lot of time on AP and I really enjoy being here. But Kevin, please do not start this feature. I'm afraid it will be used in the wrong way.

Poetry is meant to be read and not seen. Maybe you should start another site for films or theatres.
I have a very bad feeling that this feature is going to be used for "checking people out." But, I know you'll think a lot about this. Hope you make the right choice.

    God Bless,
    Josh

Poetry is theatrical. Loads of poets like to use multimedia and loads don't, I think you giving the choice of adding short films cannot be a bad thing. Some people will make thicky vanity videos where their hair's more important than their poetry but hopefully some will make more interesting use of the feature.

There is something very special about hearing a poem read in the writer's own voice. Some people seem to think that 'performance poetry' and 'page poetry' are binary opposites, I don't, I think if there's any line at all then it's a lot more blurred. There's a stuffy, academic snobbery that urges page poetry's somehow more grand and valuable than any kind of performative, staged or voiced poetry. I mean go in any library and amongst the thousands of books dedicated to poetry on the page there is very little material focussing on more recent poetry as a performance medium. This seems kind of weird as obviously the earliest poetry had to be performed just in order for it to survive and perhaps in a way some of the work on allpoetry which gets bad reception for dull things like spelling and grammar might even lend itself to a performative format where vocality's more important than technical bits and bobs? Who knows. It's another way for people to experiment at least and I think it's pretty exciting. Some people perform badly, tough, some people write badly tough tough, some people's poetry might be more condicive to performance than page and vice versa.

I'd rather listen to Ferlinghetti's recordings than read him any day, even the ones with really dodgy music. Plath's voice poetry works way better performed than read and listening to Jackie Kay read her stuff's yummy.

Dylan Thomas would fume at anyone suggesting poetry's not theatrical. Even on the page it's dramatic.

Yeah you'll get compared to youtube. Youtube's filled with a lot of crap and a lot of beauty - as is literature, as is music, as is cinema, as is telly as is everything.

maybe turning this option into just sound would do a lot for both poetry/lyrics
poetry is meant to be read aloud not to be seen
(maybe open another site alltheatre.com and post videos there ?)
afraid all this video thingy is going to turn this site into a hybrid between wanna be poetry and a dating site

this site is great for what it is
    youtube already exists

Actually, silver members can post an image as well. Gold members can post multiple images to one piece.

I, in keeping with the theme of irrelevance have no idea the why, but I am glad this new feature that is available to all. Yay!!!

You're kidding right? Is this really still a poetry site? Are we expected to read while watching the videos, vice versa, or one after the other? Not that anyone on my favourites list, or others with a decent shred of respect for poetry (with a hint of socializing) rather than SOCIALIZING (with a hint of poetry) would give any consideration to this new "feature" anyway.

I clicked on one of yours and I thought it the most ridiculous thing. I at least expected it to be off in some corner not dead center in my eyes.

Ok, playtime's over. Time to get back to the POETRY, yeah?

Yeah ... I hope we have the mods out there making sure that no explicit content ends up on those videos.. could make for quite a dilema. I like the idea though... too bad I do not have a web cam or video recorder.. we should make it so that we can do just audio recordings instead if we so choose... for those who do not like to be seen on camera..(and do not know how to make a cool video.. LOL)

Maybe you can work on that one in the coming months.

I still think it sucks we cannot use any type of music we want on our poems.. I understand the copyright thing though... but isn't there a way to get around it???

As for the rest of the site... I think it is in great shape... though I would love to see the home page and message pages in some sort color... rather than blah blah gray. Maybe have a thing set up where we can choose our colors... that would be neat... and it would be those colors til we changed it.. would be kind of fun I think.

Thanks for the great uprgrades and for fixing the poem sample things.... I really was not feelin the slashes... Keep up the great work!!

I just canceled my automatic payment of my monthly Gold subscription when it expires on August 10th, I'm done.

I am not interested in paying for features I won't use, am not interested in, and was never even polled about. Perhaps in the future if a more systematic and better thought through system of implementing and/or removing features from the site becomes apparent, I will again become a paying member.
