Column of the Week

I've decided to make a 'Column of the Week', in which I will give tips on writing, new words to get familiar with, poems to read, and quotes to think about.
June 1, 2007- June 8, 2007

I wanted to try this out, and see how it works. I am going to be putting out a weekly column, which will include tips on writing, poems to read, words to be familiar with, and quotes to think about. I think this will be good for those of you who choose to read this, along with myself, when it comes to growing as a writer. This is my first weekly column:

*Writing Tip:

Writing poetry is much different than writing novels and stories. Make sure that you scan your poem(s) for 'filler' words, words that your poem could do without. Examples of these words are: but, and, then, etc. In poetry, complex and complete sentences are not always needed.

*Quotes to think about:

"Imagination is more important than knowledge..."
-Albert Einstein

"Poetry is what gets lost in translation."
~Robert Frost

*Poem to read:

Emily Dickinson (1830–86). Complete Poems. 1924.

Part One: Life

XXI

HE ate and drank the precious words,
His spirit grew robust;
He knew no more that he was poor,
Nor that his frame was dust.
He danced along the dingy days, 5
And this bequest of wings
Was but a book. What liberty
A loosened spirit brings!

*Words to use:

Paste these on your wall, use them in your poetry, or just think about them. Broaden your vocabulary.

Ulterior: beyond what is expressed

Obfuscate: to obscure; confuse

Offal: refuse; garbage

Licentious: morally unrestrained

Immutable: unchangeable

Hanker: long for

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below and I'll reply as soon as possible. If you want advice on any of your poems, leave the link to them as well, and I'll check them out. Thanks for reading, tune in next week.

i am excited about this and I am thinking of submitting my work into a contest. I would like some extra imput. I don't expect you to read all my poetry but if you could read one or two and let me know if I even have a chance at winning. That would be nice. I haven't written in a while and i want to get back into the swing of things. any advice would be great as well. Thanks!

Sure, I'll gladly read some of your poems. If you have specific ones you'd like advice on, just tell me. If not, I'll just look at random ones.

I think that this is a fantastic idea. Great first advice about unnecessary filler words. I like the vocabulary list as well. I love Emily Dickinson also. I bookmarked this. Keep up the good work!
