To be a member of the marching band is one thing, to be a leader is another. I want to be able to make a difference, help our band become what it really can be. My life is marching band, and I know it's hard. That's why I want to help, I want to be committed to it, I want to live for it.
Why do I love marching band? Maybe it's the friends. Or maybe it's the music. It is a mix of everything. All the hard work we put in during hot summer ours and cold fall mornings out on the practice "field" add to it as well. Everything that we do to be prepared for a fiftenn minute show, it seems almost ridiculous. But until you've been down there, standing at attention, sweating and breathing hard, you don't know what hard work is. The feeling of accomplishment that runs through your veins and the pride you feel walking back to the bus is overwhelming. It's amazing.
I love the hardcore gropu called the marching band and I'd love to again be a leader in it. My heart is in the marching band, my soul in the music, my dedication in the drill, my pride on that field. It's a challenge that I can't live without.
"If marching band were any easier... it'd be called football." -Unknown
*NOTE*:
This is the paper I wrote to try out for the clarinet section leader again and I wanted to show everyone why I honestly do what I do in marching band. There are months of rehearsing and memorizing music and at least 60 spots for our drill. We strive to get the details as perfect as we can before competition when we get 15 minutes to show what we got before we step off the field. But you feel so much pride in the accomplishment before you and you realize that what you just performed can't be done by so many. When people say marching band is a sport... I say "screw you" because marching band is a sport, a committment, a family, and my life. I love it and I hope this paper somewhat expresses what I can never seem to put into words... only music. Thanks for reading! xoxo Meg
