both sexes at birth! what do you do about it?

Should you choose what sex the child is going to be at birth or let it grow up and choose for its self?
I was reading this book called Blackwood Farm, by Anne Rice, and one of the characters is both sexes. That fact got me to start thinking. What if i were a mother that had just had her baby found that it was both male and female. I came to the conclusion that i would let the child grow up and choose for its self what sex it would be. I realize that that would be tramatic for the child to grow up and not feel like either a man or a woman, but i would like to have a choice wether i would be male or female. i would like to have a say in the matter.

I brought this issue up with one of my freinds. She said she would decide which sex the baby would be by how much complete sex organs the baby had. If it was dominantly male then she would want it to be male and visa versa.

I want to know what other people think about this subject.

I live not far from a woman who has this condition. She has a complete set of both organs and the both work fine. The reason this can be is that she is a chimera (She has two blood types. While in the womb, her and her twin brother fused together, though the only part of her brother that survived the fusion was the penis and one pelvic bone. Her parents made the mistake of not telling her that having both was not natural. So she was raised a boy even she acted like a girl. As she went into puberty, she started to develop breasts. You can imagine that her life fell apart. After several blood tests, they discovered that she is less than one percent male. In addition, if not for the one bone and penis, she is female in mind and body.
The best way to approach the situation is let them know at a reasonable age the nature of things, and that there is not any way to tell until you hit puberty. On a side note, I believe she is the only person in recorded medical history to have both sexual organs and both be fully functional, but because she has two blood types, it is impossible for her to have a baby.

There is no choosing to be a male or a female, that is a combination of personalitiy and physique (not just physique), and is determined at conception.

First off, I would be very surprized. But i would just let the child grow and decide for itself what it wants to be.

I'd let it decide for itself. Puberty is traumatic so not sure at what age it should make the decision (ie start or end of puberty) but childhood's a pretty androgynous time anyway (ok maybe just for me I know lots of people can be brought up by stereotypes). I'd treat it as a kid and not as a boy or a girl.
