Pain Free Comments

I rewrote some of the author ideas to assist in healing. My hope is to give authors and readers food for thought. That words do hurt and destroy self esteem. They also have the power to heal.
The pen is mighty then the sword.
Plus I get to share another treasure from goodwill. I rescue old books, then recycle some ideas from it.
What does the word criticism mean: the art of considering merits and demerits and judging accordingly? The negative side is fault finding, hurting someone feelings.
By saying “do you know how to write?”
Criticism does not have to be painful to be effective. Criticisms that are negative are not effective comments to the author.

Let take out the word criticism and replace it with the word response. The word response helps identify the strengths of the poem. Next step is to identify the weakness of the poem. One lesson of self growth is to be open to accept our weakness. This is a normal part of the writing process.

Maybe we should focus on building a spirit of kind helpfulness. We are here to learn, grow and support the community of author’s and readers. For example give two examples of what the writer did best. Then move towards a suggestion for change. I wish your poem talked more about… Remember writing is a tool for commutation. Ask questions that stretch and improve the author work.

Communication is part of expression, awareness, acceptance that turns into creative thinking. Are we being fair giving each author the freedoms to grow in positive expression? Do we support the author enough to give him or her enough respect to let their voices be heard?

Another bias is about the length of the poem. There are dozens of poems that vary in length. Some are book forms. Some forms are very short. There are dozens of books of poems the lines vary in length. I have not found a hard and fast rule. That good poetry is short. This sentence borders are being a bias statement.

It hard to write in an environment that limits creative freedoms. To improve your art suggesting is challenging original thinking and expressing it better. This is a group adventure we share. We are to inspire fresh ideas we may not see. Open commutation says,” your are important enough to listen to and I care enough to tell you. We are here to share our love of language. Have the courage to believe inner poetry exists

I think this is an excellent column. I agree, poetry comes in many forms from short to long and inbetween. I also think positve spirited comments say alot about the commenter. Criting a piece is not about destroying the writer but assisting and building them up; making them grow as an artist of words. I enjoyed reading this piece. Blessings. Debby
