Changes to comment rewards - earn more points!

Everyone wants more reads, and the best way to get them is by advertising your poetry, either in the featured box, or the 'rewarding comments' page via the poetry tab .

Featured box items now automatically always have a reward for people who click them, so they're encouraged to comment more.

Rewards now *double* the amount of points you get for a comment. Our hope is that this will encourage longer, more critical critiques.
Adding a reward is now the same as asking for a critical comment, and adds a note before the comment box saying a critical review is appreciated and rewarded with bonus points.

Our hope is that this will encourage people to comment more, and reward good comments with more points. We're not completely happy with the way points are awarded currently, so expect further tweaks in the direction of MORE points for comments!

Happy poetry writing!

Is there any way of promoting columns that aren't written by us? One thing I liked about the old system was the ease of promoting writes you liked from others

Only charging for clicks = 60 point per comment cost

The thing people don't seem to understand is that this is a COMPETITIVE system - so the reason the cost is so high is because there are other people fighting for the same views as you.

In the past, we've tried only charging when people comment - and the cost skyrockets. I prefer having it this "affordable", and that comments are a good idea, but not required.

As to the other suggestion - if we charged people to click the featured items, then gave them back the points if they commented, guess how many people would click things in the featured box? Not many.

    Just an idea...

For the short term maybe you could cap the cost to promote at like say 18 points per click... that would hopefully get people use to promoting at that cost again.. and would enable those who can't afford 30 per click to promote once again... and since, I'm sure, more would start promoting again.. you could rotate the featured box?

I dunno... just throwing thoughts out there... trying to help.

I'm pretty sure there's a snafoo somewhere in the system... Once upon a time I'd promote a good poem and between the applause and returning the favors, I'd actually wind up ahead on points even with a reasonable percentage that didn't comment. Granted the poem had to be worthy, and I've always tried to leave a meaningful and often lengthy footprint behind when I have commented in return. As to people who don't leave a comment, I generally assumed that there were some that just didn't like the poem or didn't relate to the poem and therefore didn't comment because they are afraid of getting flamed for their honesty (some authors are overly touchy about even diplomatic comments on their lesser efforts).

At 30+ points per click, no comment clicks add up fast. But bribing people to comment seems terribly wrong somehow. As a matter of fact, it's likely to promote boiler plate comments like "I really enjoyed this poem. I'm glad I stopped by. Best of luck. Keep up the good work." (sound familiar to anyone?)

So if I had my druthers, I'd recommend no comment - no cost to the author and no credit to the clicker. If you don't want to leave a comment that's ok, you shouldn't have to because no one is getting charged for it. For people that leave meaningless boiler plate comments, I'm sure that it will affect the manner in which their favors are returned.

Like Barbara, I've only be receiving the same amount of points as usually, unless maximum points per comment is now 4 and that's being doubled.

Looks like it may be working right now. I just commented on a reward piece and got the extra points. It wasn't doing that for me yesterday So maybe the magic extra point fairy came out and sprinkled a little more fairy dust on the system overnight

There has been a bug with the auto-reward on featured items that people click, which should be fixed soon.

Does this mean that featured poems will have bonus points in them? I just made a comment and got the usual points for it...no bonus anywhere. Or, am I missing something?

What galfalfa wrote I support wholeheartedly. Poets who invest hard earned points in featuring the fruit of their mind deserve better than scores of visitors just dropping in to gain points. I would like to go even further and suggest that negative amounts of points can also be accumulated by clicking featured poems without bothering to leave a comment. When they have reached minus a certain amount of points, mods should perhaps inquire why they never left a comment and if they continue their conduct warn them or remove them from AP. I appreciate measures are being taken to rid poets of their frustrations and support those who take writing poetry seriously. Take care,

    U

Great idea..i do hope they get the points subtracted if they leave no commnet in the featured section. That will stop random clickers ..who click , see a bunch of words and cry " Dah, i can't read all this - oh well i got points just for clicking anyways, on to the next.

I've read the 13 comments to this news before mine...I think this is a good move on your part... it seems that you are listening to 'the ap people' and trying to find ways to make us happy. Remember, you can't make everyone happy all the time... you're doing a good job Kevin, I'm sure it can get frustrating at times so I thank you for all you do...

NOW... for a suggestion... and this relates only to the featured box...

I actually think that if a person clicks on a featured poem and doesn't comment.. that points would be charged to them... that would greatly discourage (spelling) those who click and don't comment... I quit using the featured box because of the many who click and leave... I think that if they knew they would loose points by clicking and leaving.. they'd stop doing it.

Thanks for listening... and thanks for the wonderful job you are doing...

    I'm confused as usual

Does this mean that "Rewarding Poetry" will no longer appear on the front page? Does this mean that rewards will no longer be given - rewards as they stand today?

    Sorry for my confusion.

rewards are given as they are today. They're not showing on the front page for now because of other (unrelated) design decisions, but they may come back. For now, clicking 'Poetry' at the top is the way to get to them.

    Vultures are still here.

I welcome your increasing the points for 'clickers' on Features and Rewards, but how is that going to stop the clickers who click and don't comment ?? I have wasted thousands of points from this practice and advocate the policy of "NO COMMENT - NO POINTS" and then that would be a fair thing, but I can't see anything changing with the latest move.
The effect of the system as it has been until now was to reduce the amount of Featuring and Rewarding because it was just a waste of hard earned points.
I know that in the past whenever this point has been raised, that a big proportion of your paying members are pissed of with the clickers who don't comment and I am certain the proposed new system won't change their minds. However, to be fair I will give it a brief trial, but must admit I believe it will not change for the better, and if that is the case will have to rethink my reasons for being a member of this site.
Mate, Fair is Fair...... but why punish you paying members ???

      Click = No comment

Certainly not only the paying members who are a little p**ssed with the click - no comment people, it take some long hard work of commenting to earn enough points to promote and I for one promote others not myself so much, but to see those points go down the drains, frustates me, has ever since I joined 6 years ago!! Some things will never change, no matter how we whine about them Bazza... but glad some of us are on the same page here

I applaud you for trying Kevin , and let's see what comes of this. I just hope that it does not encourage lenghtier but worthless comments , just for the sake of points, but we will never know unless we try eh?

i also agree with kendell on both reasons but i am looking forward to the more points part. And being a beginer myself i do know its hard to not give anything lees than good praise. So i am a bit mixed on this subject as most people are about anything that has great benifits and drawbacks. So i say continue onward on your point attempt and have a happy poetry writing for you too!!

    Yay

    Does the cyber happy dance.

Is there an emote for that?

I think that this will encourage more clicks in the featured area for sure and more comments of some sort. The good thing about getting people commenting is that practice tends to change the way we comment. I know that when I first came to the site, I was a bit apprehensive of saying anything less that good about a write, but the more I commented the more I was able to learn to interject my dislikes about a piece along with the things I liked in a way that it could be heard and appreciated.

I am certainly ready to give it a whirl Thanks Kevin.

While I like the idea of more points, since I run a lot of contests, this isn't the way to go for more critical comments. An understanding of poetry has to take place before you can give a critique. A lot of people come here as beginners and just aren't equipped to critique - myself included. The promise of more points will do a few things:

    1) Drive the cost of promotion up even further.

    2) Encourage faster, less thought out comments from people eager to gain more points. In most cases only to promote their own piece.

It's nice to see an attempt being made, I just don't think this is the right direction to take.
