Have you ever sat down and thought about what kind of music you listened to. Also why you listened to that style of music. We all have tastes in music on what's good and what's bad. We all have musicians and bands we love and we worship those musicians and bands accordingly. I was listening to one of the pop stations we have down here in Maine. Surprisingly this pop station played a few songs that I liked. One was by Nickelback and the other was by Evanscene. I sat there amazed. I was listening to the pop station for once in my life and I liked what I heard!
I think most of our musical preference is with at birth. I mean our preference for music is mostly picked up by what our parents listen to. Also what we listen to when we are growing up. I grew up in a pretty cool household. My mother loved rock music and other styles of music. I remember being a little kid and going through some of my mother's old records that she had lying around. There would be some really cool bands in there. One of my favorite bands as a kid was Steppenwolf and some of the early Led Zepplin stuff.
Around 12 or 13 I started to venture out of the musical nest. Well so to speak. Remember I'm big on stupid metaphors! I started actually going out to our local store. Which was an AMES in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. They had a decent selection of music. It wasn't the best. Trust me. I found this band called "Black Sabbath" the cover was simple the band name and the album name. I looked down at the cd I had in my hand. The case was all black.
I turned it over and saw a few songs I recognized. It was only two I knew. "Iron Man" and a song called "Paranoid". I remember my mother telling me about a band with a similar name. I bought and when I got home I popped it into my pc CD player. I played it and it hit me. This was one of the best bands in the world.
Mind you, when I was younger my parents had a tape that had a bunch of Metal bands on it. One of them was Black Sabbath and I think one of the songs was "Iron Man" so you could say. My parents at birth were forming one of the most dedicated metal heads on earth!
But before I found out about this band Black Sabbath.
I used to dabble in listening to pop music. To be honest and open. I didn't think most if at that time [1996-1998] wasn't that bad. You got some good bands and you got some bad bands. My favorite pop band at that time was Smash Mouth. To this day I still like that band!
I also liked a band called the Backstreet Boys. Yes, all you metal heads who are reading this can laugh now. I don't deny that I liked them in the past. My musical choices make me who I am. The music industry is one of the biggest entertainment industries around. There is no escaping that. Also music has become a very good escape for kids that want to express themselves. Learn an instrument start singing about what you wanna sing about. That in itself is a great escape.
I've also thought that we listen to the music we listen to. Because of how we feel at that moment. If we will fucking pissed off we are gonna listen to a fucking pissed off song. If we are sad we are gonna listen to a sad song. If we're happy we'll listen to a happy song. Get my drift?
I don't think we could fully explain why we listen to a certain band or a certain style of music.
You might come up an explanation why you listen to a certain band or a certain musician. That's primarily your opinion and pergotive.
I'm sitting her in a cold and damp computer room with my CD player in the background. It's playing the best of Grim Reaper. I scroll up the page and I've looked at what I've written. I'm shaking my head with disbelief and question. I'm wondering why I even started writing this. It's because I had an idea in my head and I wanted to share it. I've asked a question that can't really be answered. I mean we do have an answer for this question. It's not an real answer. It is more of an opinion answer. I know there is someone out there that might be reading this. If I post it. Thinking to themselves. "Hey dip shit. This is an easy question I can answer it!"
In my conclusion of sorts. I've finally asked a question that even I can't answer. The music we listen to and why we listen to it. It is a mystery even to me. My musical past is covered in everything.
Rock, Metal, Pop. Hair Bands, Country bands, Oldie Bands, Grunge bands. I'm a lover of every kind of music. The only thing in life that I'm really passionate about. Call me what you want. Just because I don't listen to METAL all the time doesn't make me a less of a metal head than you are. I've been listening to rock and Metal for more than 10 years.
In the words of Mick Jagger.
"I like it, I love it, I want some more of it."
I'll be a Metal head until the day I die. I'll lift those devil horns into the air with pride. Because this music is my life, my passion. And these metal heads are my brothers!
