This is a survey course that covers six basic metrical feet (units of rhythm), how to describe and combine them, and how the choice of meter affects the overall tone of the poem. Each lesson begins with a demonstration of the meter in action, a brief discussion of the form and how it can be used, and some examples from well known poets.
Each lesson has a quick and easy quiz, followed by a short writing assignment to let you try writing your own lines in the meter.
There are a total of nine short lessons. The first three introduce the terms used to describe elements of meter. The remaining six lessons each focus on a metrical foot and give you a chance to experiment.
Taught by Epistomolus. Teaching assistants: lianonsidhe.
