I thought I'd make it a little more explicitly stated. I would appreciate honest-but-helpful comments, and I would also appreciate knowing who I can give honest comments to. And I know a lot of people feel the same way. So let's make a list. Then you can go to other people's pages on the list and leave real comments, and also get more comments on your own poems.
If you want to be part of this, put your name down. And maybe the name of a poem you'd really like someone to take a look at. -
I used to write good old five pointers, offering what I believed to be constructive criticism, and a clear statement to IM me at the changes that they had made. But obviously not, as all I got (and isn't it always selfish?) was a lack of even a curteous acknowledgement, though I occasionally got something like, "I like this." or "YaY, KoOl RitE!!!!.." with the exclamation marks extending to infinity. So now I have become adolescently monosyllabic. But I don't like this. Anyway, I shall revert to my current mood for brevity; Please sign me up for this.
-
I would appreciate this, although as I said in another topic in here I am not very confident of my ability to give useful critiques.
-
I would appreciate helpful comments that could help to improvemy own work and also whatI could use to help improve others, I mean I do like to recieve comment ssaying oh I love you poem, great write etc.. although I would also like helful comments too :)
-
Hoping I'm not too late to get involved. My attitude is that the craft of poetry resides in selecting the correct words and spacing to create the desired effect on the reader. This will obviously be subjective, but the only way to improve is to find out how the reader reacts. I tend to think that anything can be improved: One of my favorite poems is GM Hopkins' "Wreck of the Deutschland". If he were alive and listening, I'd tell him to cut the first seven stanzas.
I try to comment on how word and image choices, rhythm, spelling, punctuation, and spacing impact on my overall experience of what I took to be the author's intent. I generally leave the poets' intended messages alone; their motivations are none of my business (though I try to avoid suicide and unicorn poems). -
-
Excellent, We ought to start a little clique...
-
-
I'm in dire need of some good criticism, and I would love to increase my skills as a critiquer.
Does this message make this ^^^ possible? -
-
hey...i will look at all of your guys work...and try and leave helpful comments or critiques if i can...please check mine out! the only one that means alot to me is my violin, so please be moderatly nice to it...hehe; comment on anything and everything else and be critical if you must. thanks so much...this is cool!
-
-
Okay, we work in an entirely back scratching way, and hope to please with stoic criticism. If you wish to hear how much we can relate, then you need not bother, for this doesn't help you improve at all.

I hope this will come out on the Bulletin Board as I have posted it. I do love to give blunt and honest critiques to write-ups irrespective of the writer's opinion, as I am able to endure same. When they have been published for anyone to view, then you must be prepared for some types of comments, though they MUSN'T be scathing!
Please cliqu-ers(?), do view my poem titled 'dON jUAN'. It's my first post as I'm a new member. I'll return the favour. Thanks. -
Yes giving honest critiques at times can make someone sound harsh. Evidenced when another poet told me so in a comment of hers relating to a poem I had noticed many errors on. The poet herself didn't seem hurt, she fixed the errors I had caught, and even added me to her favorites. My opinion is that we all came here to get comments to improve our writing, and if someone critiques a poem in depth then that means they bothered to read it and get it's meaning unlike others who simply say "Great write!" without even saying what they like or why. Anyway I don't have a specific poem I want commented on...any one of them will do as long as you tell me what I should work on, and please be honest. I'm not sensitive...I admire honesty. Thanks again.

K i'll enter.

Hey translucent and everyone who is one this topic. I fully agree with Demon Loner and can say i'm the same way. All critiques are welcome in my book, but again... only those that would help me improve as a poet and a writer, is what i really appriciate. Critical critique is always wanted, don't ever think you are too harsh with me. Even though I haven't been writing for a while due to school, I was finally pushed back into one of my childhood loves: writing poetry.I recently joined this site, and completely forgot how beautiful and a true gift that poetry represents. Seeing that it's been a long period of years since I've wrote poetry or anything for that matter, i value peoples opinionated critique. If you happen to run across me, dont' be shy. I'm very open minded, and blunt with my comments as much as I can be.
~Silent Rei~ -
I would love for someone to honestly critique my work. I am attached to my writing, but I know I have room to improve. As my ability to write improves, my ability to critque will as well. I invited any comments on my writing as long as you tell me why you felt that way about what I wrote.
-
-
I really agree with windhover3, I believe that very few poems are written for no reason. Even if it was a spontaneous write, it still influenced you enough that you desired writing it down so as not to lose it. We all have poems close to our hearts because they are extensions of our feelings. I would love honest criticism on how someone else understood the emotion within my poems. What made you sad or how well you can relate to that situation. Tell someone that you like the adjective they used in their third line.
A simple "that was great" is unacceptable. We, as poets, have a responsibility to better the art. One of the best ways we can do that is get our material out and help other writers refine their own. True style and feeling is not a facade, it cannot merely be created. A miraculous poem will move you, and you should feel closer to the artist for having shared that feeling with them. That is what I believe, thanks for a place to vent.

First of all, add me to the list - I'm getting bored with "Awesome job, I can really sympathize. Keep writing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", especially when I put out in-depth line by line analysis of a poem, which for the longer ones can be over 3000 words.
Oh, by the way, if anyone wants one of the critiques described, I'll do a few for you if you'll return the favor. I'm not going to be able to, however, past Sept. 8th.
If you want a fantastic critiquing site - one where you're expected to be thick skinned and really work on your skills and poems - everypoet.org/pffa is a good place to check out. Don't dive in too fast, though; check it out first and decide if you're up for the commitment.
pyrrhic -
Well i would appreciate honest critique any day. it tells me you have honestly and genuinely read my work and have the character to tell me your honest opinion. But i would also not mind if along with the problem i am offered the solution to it .. so i can know more clearly as to what i have to work on.

See, I have an issue with telling people what to do with their poetry. When a critic goes from simply telling you what's wrong to making suggestions to better the poem, it's equivalent to a movie critic telling a director what to do. I've used this metaphor before - when someone's making a cake with the wrong ingredients and you catch them at it, do you tell them what they're doing wrong, pull out the ingredients they need, then kick them out of the kitchen so you can make it yourself? Also, the moment a suggestion is taken, it becomes a collaborative piece between you and the suggestion-maker.
Just my thoughts...
pyrrhic -
-
Well, that's one way of looking at it.
But if you see someone making a cake with the wrong ingredients, do you say, "you're using the wrong ingredients" and leave it at that, or do you say "Watch out, you're using salt instead of sugar"?
Practically everything is bad when taken to extremes. I tend to take the "I don't think line X works as it stands, why don't you try 'JJJJJ' or something like that instead?" route. Which is better than either "You're using dull language" or "Line X is really bad, you should use my suggestion."

I think starting this thread was a great idea!
One of the main reasons I come on this website is to critique others because I love to add my opinion and add ideas as to how the writer can make their poem/story better.
Hopefully some of my poetry/stories can be looked at while I look at some of the people who have listed. :)

I would love to have honest feed back on my poems. There are so many false people on this site that seem to be only for their friends egos.
The best kind of critisim is hard critisim. Count me in.

I've been trying to improve my poetic skills (if any exist lol) but my only critics have been family....and all I get is praise. I am actually getting tired of this and would like a serious critique...no matter how harsh or severe. So I say...."PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sign me up for this!"

I'm really dying for something other then, "Wow, lol, that was really great." I want someone to tell me what it made them think and how it made them feel when they finished.
I'm really dying for someone to find a flaw in something I wrote, and to tell me how it should be changed so I can improve it. I don't write poetry, generally, because I'm really bad at it. But I do occasionally dabble in it when a story just doesn't give the right rythm.
I always think it'd be nice for people to actually read my stuff, not just sigh and wonder why it's so long.
So, uhm. I'd really like to get in on this. A lot.
-
-
I'm just wondering: has everyone here already tried giving the kind of critiques they want to receive?
-
-
I used to a little but I think a lot of people (or at least the ones I critiqued) got offend by the comments.
-
-
I know I'm a little late commenting on this, but this is the first time I've ventured into the bulletin. Anyway I understand exactly where your comming from its frustrating getting comments that consist of, "great job' or 'i'm so sorry this has happened to you'. First of has anyone heard of a narrative poem? lol, but that's my own little pet peeve. Well I think it would be a great idea to have a group or a list of names of people who like and will give good honest critiques, so if anyone starts one sign me up!
-
-
Well I started up a group called Trading Comments which is for getting good, honest comments that actually help. Come and join in your interested.

a real critique needs to be explicative and illuminative. We should be trying to help our fellow writers, and not solely with pats on the back. even the best poetry ever written could be improved. much of it in ways that i would be at a complete loss as to HOW. but i am sure that editing has made many great poems greater and sorry poems good.
i like to explore the meaning of a poem and see if it is a worthy one and how it was handled. a lot of poetry that we encounter here is overt and has no subtlety of theme. that's fine, but i like images.
aesthetics is also something people can be criticized on. we believe all too much today that every one has there own aesthetics, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." while this is undoubtedly true, that does not mean beauty is in the eye of the writer. everyone who posts poetry is not only writing for themselves, they want this to be read, and are, by implication, trying to create something that has a universal beauty, and can communicate universally. right?
anyone who would like to employ this kind of criticism to my work is enthusiastically invited to do so.
i will return the favor. -
-
I agree totally. The whole point of a critique is to improve the quality of writing, not to boost the poet's ego. That's praise, which can be a very good thing, or not so good, but I'm not posting for praise, I really do want to improve my writing.
Please, don't be gentile with my work. Tell me, not only what you think of it, but *why*
I too will return the favor.
-
-
Just so everyone knows, I've started a group - The Core - for hardcore poets and critics. Sorry to say, but not everyone's welcome, no matter how few members I get (the standards are pretty high) but the general idea is to start a workshop as opposed to a posting board here on AP.
-
-
well id like some hard core critiques on any of my writing...im not sure im good at giving good critiques though. :S
-
-
Yeah...I too want good, honest critiques! I kinda have this system that I use when I write one. It is on my author page! :)
*hug*
xxBelaxx -
I think it's a great idea to list a bunch of people who will try their best to give the poet some proper critique. I'd love to be a part of this. I always try to be as honest as possible but often times it's hard to know how the person will react to honesty. Not everyone cares to improve, although posting poetry on a site usually means it will be critiques some people just post in order to get comments and become popular. I'm going to start going to the pages of the people who have already replied to this and try my best to help.
-

I am new to AllPoetry or realatively new,and I do feel people should be honest with their points of view.If someones writting is not to your liking then simply state this is not something I am able to critique as it's not to my liking.Don't make stuff up or copy three or four of the other posters comments. Now for another gripe along the same lines.I could be wrong on this and if I am please some one tell me!The points we recieve for critiques are based on how long our comments happen to be.If that is the case have enough respect for the author and yourself not to quote half their work in your comment.I had someone use three paragraphs of my own story and their quote was something like "I loved the begining"(insert what ever swear words you deem fit).Is that fiar to me for some one to receive mucho points off my work? Can they be monitored for plagerism?Refer to the lines or stanzas by the numerical order in which they appear.
Please if I have the way points are given wrong let me know as I haven't found where that info is located on the site.

If you find people leaving such critiques, you can use the form at the bottom of the page to 'ticket' them. It's known as spam, and isn't allowed. However, it's impossible for the moderators to check every comment, so they rely on us letting them know. Use the form labelled "Inappropriate content on this page? Please let us know which rule this page is breaking."
Examples of spam are:
1) Using long strings of one character to get extra characters, such as !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2) Copying a large part of the original post into the comment.
3) Using the same comment copied and pasted for multiple different poems (this is hard to spot unless you go to the "view critiques by" on the commenter's author page.)
There are others.
On the other hand, the points that a person gets for commenting on your work don't come from your points, but from the site. Sure, spamming is very annoying and puts people off reading your work (or comments on your work), but you don't lose points from it.

I think this is a great idea! I don't know if anyone is still checking this seeing as it was posted a long time ago. I'm new to AP but so far I'm really enjoying it. The best of the comments I got so far was completely honest, it stated what they liked about my story, which I appreciated so much! And also let me know what maybe needed some work. It was on my story "A New Beginning" and it is a rather long story, the lady that commented went back and actually found a line with a rather confusing typo in it, from probably half way through the story and pointed it out to me. I really appreciated that, it showed she really did enjoy the story, had actually read the entire thing, and wanted to be constructive in her commenting on it. So far I haven't given much critiscism in my comments. Mainly because I wasn't feeling too confident on my ability to advise well when I'm so new here. Today, however, a few things were noticeable to me and I pointed them out. I would really enjoy having someone who was willing to be honest and let me know what needed worked out in my poems or stories. I also would attempt to be honest and constructive with others. I think that is the entire point of this site, so yea a list is a great idea!
~Stefani~ -
Yes, I'd love to get honest comments and critiques. I am new at haiku writing and I love this site. People seem to be very nice here. I would love to make friends with them and know them better, and, for this, honesty is important. I'd love my haikus to be reviewed. Thanks!
Charishma -
i agree with you and i would also appreciate getting critiqued this way as well. I hate when you read some simple rhymed cliche bull crap and your thinking "i bet people tore this one up" and read down and all the critiques are like "well this was so good it really inspired me" bull you thought exactly what i thought and if you didnt; more than likely your poems and writings are like the one i just read or your a very very very warm hearted person, usually i am to but this writing i take it very seriously, i mean everyone deserves a good job for writing but i suspect that people on this site are somewhat remotely serious about their writings and want a real critique so i get mad at people who just say it was really good..blahdy blah blah because your arent helping that person out at all yah some of my stuff is horrible crap that i wrote in 8th grade i just put it on here to see if i could mature it or something or to show off the talent i had in 8th grade and i expect to see good (not like my poem is good but like to do things good) critiques on them and i get crap WHY I ASK WHY?? LOL throws hands up and drops to knees WHY?! but so critique away at me please! :)

I think that honesty and constructive criticism are crucial for improvement.
I leave real critiques, and long to get more. -
I am not sure if I did this right, but here goes. Sign me up for critiques. I try to be honest in mine. I point out the good things, then gently, I hope, point out the errors. So far, I have only received on obnoxious reply. I told her that I would not be reading anymore of her works. And most of the reviews I have received have been honest, even if they did not like the poem. I am tired of reading "Ooooo, this is the best you have ever done" "you are the greatest poet I know" etc. And for heaven's sake, I wish some of the reviewers would learn to type. I just want to delete some of my reviews, they are so hard to read.
-
-
sign me up too! I mean I like the whole: "wow! awesome! I love it!" But what does that DO to help my poetry? so yeah, I want people to be honest even if they tear it apart at least I can know how to improve!
-
-
ooh add me to this list. i am relatively new, but the lack of substantial comments is getting rather gritting. i am also shocked by the reaction i get when i leave a critical comment on a poem-- lots of stammering and "thanks, i guess" moping bs...
anyways, point being, an honest opinion for an honest opinion sounds like a good policy to me. no one's missing an eye for that. -
I'm not really a very new entrant to poetry and had a few of mine published here and there. When I joined up this site I really expected some understanding criticism (+ve or -ve doesn't matter, but at least which woild mean they've UNDERSTOOD the poem, not just gone through it). Y'know, people who understand real poetry criticism and who have a good knowledge base maybe... THAT is what I really need because I post poems here only to check if they're good enough to be sent for publication.
I've been searching the site for such 'understanding' critics since then. Hopefully here I found some.
- Mandy -
I'd love to have real critism on my poems. Sure, its great to hear how much people like your work, but I would jump at the chance to get really, honest feedback. I really want to improve my writings, but it's hard if I can't get any feedback telling me what swrong with my poems. I really don't care which of my poems you critique, I'd greatly appreciate it no matter which one you did. I will also try to do the same in return. I am not that great of a critiquer, but I would like to impove my ability in that as well.
-
-
I'm completely with the same thoughts.
I would love all comments that point out places where I can improve (besides punct on poems because my punct has become a habit but as for my stories hits to contest I invite all to please do your best to critique me)
I do try to point out places where one could improve even if I dislike the poem or story, but sometimes I just can't find places where things can be done or there are too many.
-Tate -
I'd love to have some real commentary on my poetry- not necessarily criticism, but comments that show the reader has some real poetic knowledge.
-
-
Brilliant idea. I would love someone to critique my 'Sinner Again', as it is newly written and in need of extensive bashing. I would be happy to take a look at a few of your writings, and offer ways to improve. I believe in honesty foremost ; if something needs work, why sugarcoat it? On the other hand, if something is brilliant, I'm not hesitant to say that, as well.
So, add me to whatever 'lists' you have. Cheers! -
There is nothing that I love more than a positive criticism that enables me to improve and nothing that I hate more than a hypocritical "Wonderful job".
