I'm considering making just the 'few lines' what gets emailed out in the future, but thought I'd ask for peoples opinions first before making another change.
Sorry that I didn't ask this earlier in the process; I hadn't thought it through well enough to realize it might be a controversial topic.
My other defense is that the feature was originally conceived for journal entries, which might make more sense (imagine sending your friends and family updates about your travels in europe, etc).
Anyways, thanks for being a member of allpoetry, and for your patience while we work through adjusting updates

Question
Do we have to disable the feature separately on all the network sites then- like -do I need to disable on All Journal and Share Poetry and StoryWrite as well if I don't want to send or receive notification of my posts or those of others from any of the netwrok sites, or will disabling on AllPoetry disable it for all the other sites as well? -
Kevin,
I want to start this comment by telling you how much I have enjoyed this site since joining. I have become a silver member. I have posted a couple of comments related to my disatisfaction with the new email notification system. I was hoping to be able to disable the function. Apparently I do not understand how to do this or the bugs are not yet worked out of the system. At first I planned on leaving the site if I got no response to my comments or was not able to disable the function.
I am no hoping that by putting all AP information into junk mail, my email will not longer be cluttered with these notifications. I am also hoping that no notifications of my poetry will go to other peoples email. Can you tell me how to determine if my settings are correct to prevent this?
Mike

Why not just go to "My Account", and look under "personal Information". Then click on "Edit Email and notification preferences".
Every option your heart desires is available right there.
Why is this messing with so many people's heads? (it may have had some problems at the beginning, but it seems to be working just fine, now. Easy as pie.

Friends

[after a few minutes of thought]
ooohhh ... friends
...
I don't want anybody emailed when I post something in the poetry section.
Will there be a do not email button? -
I haven't posted a poem since this feature became available, so it really hasn't impacted me.
However, if I understand the feature correctly (and I really might not, as I haven't as yet used it), I think it would be prudent to include defaults like what most blogs, Facebook and other social network sites offer regarding notifications. That is, you can (a) affirmatively permit or not permit your poems to be sent to friends, and (b) you can either permit or block notifications of poems being sent to you by friends.
I receive enough junk mail in my various email accounts, that I really don't want them cluttered with any new notifications that I don't specifically authorize. Plus, I check some email accounts far less regularly than others.
Most social networks have gone to such permissions for a reason -- user reaction is overwhelmingly negative to receiving notifications that the user did not have a say in receiving.
Again, though, my sincere apologies if I am misunderstanding the new feature such that this post is superfluous, as I have not as yet used the email notification feature and thus may misunderstand it. -

If people on your list of favourites/friends have posted, you will have been sent an email about it . That is, if the email address you have registered here is functional. It appears to be a going out and a coming in thing, which (it would appear) can be disabled or enable separately, but you need to physically opt out of it if that's what you want.
That's how I understand it anyway.

Are there people that actually want the allpoetry network sending their poems to people unsolicited?
-
I would prefer my poems not to be sent through email at all. if my friends/favourites want to read my poetry, it will show up on their homepage when I post something new. and if it is not on their homepage, they know how to navigate to my page.
that's my vote... -
I don't want to be emailed when someone posts a poem at all and nor do I want to be bombarding other people's inboxes when I post a poem.
If I want to see what my favorites have written there is a button conviently under Recently Added.
Is there way to turn this off?
-
I'd prefer that an e-mail not get sent. If the people who have me on their favorite's list want to see whatever new poem I've written, it's pretty easy to find.
-
I don't want an email sent, or even a link though that's what I voted - you had no option for no notification of anything, please and thanks.
I want to prevent these going out to all those who have me as a fav. Do I have to put them on ignore one by one, delete myself as a fav, and scurry around doing it again if they link me as a fav again - to stop this from happening? This will take an awful lot of effort. -
Right ..... based on the views of the people here NO email should be sent to anyone when a poem is posted.
It seems no one wants it.
This means the idea should be binned completely.
-
this is an absolutely terrible idea
there is no way i want an email sent out to anyone when i post a poem.. if they are interested they can come look at it on site...
Kevin... it's a terrible idea on facebook
and an even worse idea here... what are thinking?
Why would anyone want this?
What is the advantage to it?
-
Where's the option to not have the notification emailed at all?
-
I neither see the point of email notifications for poetry, nor do I want them ~ to be notified of other people's posts, or for my work to be sent out. I like to keep track of where it's being posted; I can't do that if it's all being sent out to email addresses I know nothing about. There are some people on here, including myself, who at times post a lot of poems in one go. I don't want my inbox being clogged by that; I've had enough of that with Facebook, mailing me over every trivial comment when I was reading and responding to them on there at the time they were sent anyway!!!!! These discussion threads only perpetuate my concern, Kevin, that you're focusing on needless minutae, and trying to make the site compete with/resemble the likes of Facebook more and more, despite protests from members on various boards here that it's the last thing they want!
With the exception for Mods/yourself/Admin to contact a person by email about AP matters, why on Earth does a poet's email have to be used by the site for ANY other reason? We are here ... our poetry is here ... if people want to read it, come find it! It's really that simple!!!
In the old days you kept asking for improvements that could be made to AP, and how AP could be made into a more polished site for poets and poetry, with more credibility. The simplest and most effective way to do this is to stop pondering on gimmicks, and enhance the poetry-writing and reading aspects of the site foremost. Polish the page image ... keep the basic page colour and border formatting, but get rid of all those horrid, tacky, garish themes and backgrounds. The "community" aspect will more or less take care of itself. We don't need endless gimmicks and new tricks ... it's essentially the profile pages and poetry through which we all network, connect and socialise anyway!
I dislike the new concept of "Friends". Return to the old favourites list, or better still, do what Editred.com do, and have what is simply a "Readers-List". A considerable number of people on my contacts lists here are neither Friends nor Favourites ... they are people generally whose works I read occasionally, or whose username is put into my Favourites if they have asked me to do some critiquing or editing work for them, so I can better keep track of them. Of course there are a few people such as Poet2Angels and Night Hope for instance, who I do regard as Friends and Favourites both, and who I have known a long time. A Readers-List also gives the site more polish, and a better public image as being a poetry site worth being taken seriously. Run annual opportunities for AP anthologies to be published and sold, and for all entries to recommended/voted on etc. Link the site with Lulu and such, and focus on offering info services and publishing lists, all the latest news on the poetry publishing world. Those are things that could improve AP, not Profile-Tabs, Emailed-Poem Notices, or anything such. You're just creating more work for yourself (and for we who have to read/delete the emails we get), rather than making real changes that really would be of benefit - to the site and all its users.

Your comment was added:
I have deleted all my 'favourites' except for one, but the counter on my page says I have 2favorites. The Bear have deleted all of his except one, and he apparently has 3 favorites. In the light of all this email spamming by the site, this worries us. Who are these other invisible favourites who would have been able to access our email in box simply by posting on here?
[worries] -
how have these notifications been sent? does it show that the site is sending them or does it appear we are overly ambitious and sending out our poetry--- ?
-
The good thing about receiving these blue background complete with AP bannered postings is that your friends can potentially comment on your poems from right there in their emails without having to bother to come here, but then they try it and it tells them they need an updated browser.
-
Well currently I am not receiving any notifications...phew! I checked or unchecked(whatever it was lol) and that seemso be working. Should there be an override on that I will have no choice but to delete all my fries and favourites
-
kevin,
when was this started? i have to figure out how much damage control i need to do. -
-
I don't think anyone who has you on their favorites list would blame you for the emails. (The system started about a week and a half ago, maybe two weeks.)
Another note: the default setting resets notifications every time a person logs in - so anyone who comes here once or twice a day will not receive most notifications (the system pretty much assumes that if you are logging in you know what your faves are up to). So, really, the only people who got notifications would be the folks who aren't here every day. I received maybe a half dozen notifications before I shut them off this morning.
-
-
maybe this is my blond moment but... erm...
i didnt know email notifications were sent out when you posted a new poem. -
Basically, my problem.
If there's an option to "judge a book by its cover" -- or say, just by the first few lines.
OR
View the entire poem in email, that'd cause a lot less people to voluntarily view poems just because they read it first in their email, not on the poet's page.
So.
A like would be dandy. -
I would like my poems to be a surprise. I want them to take time to visit my page n read it only if they want to...not for it to be shoved into their inbox. Then they feel obliged to read it n thats not how I want my poetry to be viewed. Thanks for the option ne ways but personally i like it the way it is!
I meant in the poll. It's as legitimate a choice as the rest.

Kevin
