okay, so lately I've been noticing people keep posting contests and failing to judge them. today I logged in and two contests I had entered months ago were deleted today due to contest host negligence. one of these contests I know was posted in August because it was posted ten days after my birthday. and it's not like these people aren't online either, or rarely log in.

is there some way that AP can limit the amount of times the user extends the contest date, or something along the similar path? like if you post a contest on November 1, say you have to have it judged by January 1 to at least try to discourage people from ignoring their contests? and then maybe if they violate these rules they can have a temporary ban from posting contests?

I do remember a contest that was posted before I was even a member of this site and it was not judged until this past April. but the contest host made certain to read and comment EVERY entry and treat it fairly and the host also kept us updated on what was going on and why it was taking so long to judge. I don't have a problem with that; in fact, I'd at least prefer an explanation than people who post new contests for whatever reason and fail to judge them.

I'm probably going to get attacked for this, as I realize this is a shaky idea and people have multiple opinions, but it's something I'm throwing out tentatively. I do wonder if anyone else is at least mildly agitated about this.
  • I have not had quite the problem you have, but I have noticed that a few contests were judged quite late. If it happens alot, I would suggest that something be done. I do get irritated when people fail to comment. I try to remember not to enter their contests again.

A couple contest I've entered have been deleted recently as well. I know that sometimes there's a good reason why a contest doesn't get judged, but it's annoying when people who are regularly on here don't judge their contests. You have a good point, maybe something should be done if someone fails to judge a contest more than once.
    • agreed. I mean people may forget or have limited internet access, and that's okay and it's going to happen. but some people just don't judge them.

If the contest is closed for a length of time, a mderator will step in and judge the contest.
If the host keeps extending the date, then it would still be considered open.

Unfortunately, there are no set rules as to why a contest may be deleted, and if a host feels there aren't enough entries (or sometimes as they put it- quality entries ) then they delete it. I think they should at least be required to send a note to all the entrants.
        • the contest host him/herself deleting it isn't my problem. I'm irritated with people who keep numerous contests open at a time and wait like three or four months to judge them. especially when these people log in regularly and even write poetry regularly.

I had this problem, and a moderator did intervene. But I had been unable to complete a judgement due to a missing box, in spite of trying repeatedly to fulfil my obligations. So, just occasionally it could be that one needs a "deus ex machina".
  • I think if the host is communicating with his/her entrants consistently, then a couple of time extensions shouldn't be an issue. However, if indeed the host appears to absentee, especially if it chronically happening with the majority of his/her contests, then by all means perhaps he/she should be temporarily banned.
    • I agree. I've been a contest where the contest host apologized for her inability to judge sooner. but she has judged all of her other contests I've entered on time.
  • I recently ticketed a contest that had been judging since October 20th. The contest holder hadn't logged in since October 6th. It has a total of 38 entries, 29 have not been viewed, 1 has been viewed, and 8 have been commented on. This contest had been open since September 5th. A moderator told me that contest holders get contacted when their contests have been judging for three weeks. It has now been 3 weeks and a day. Does the fact that the contest holder hasn't logged in since 12 days before the contest ended not say that they're not likely to respond to any warnings? When I ran a week past the closed for judging date on one of my contests, I got a warning that if I didn't judge within 3 days of that date, I'd get a points fine and my contest would be moderator-judged. So that's a total of 10 days after closed for judging. This person is now at 22 days after closed for judging. In the past, there were a fair number of contests that were judged by moderators, some after two weeks.
    • I've only been a member since January so I have no idea what moderators have done in the past about this issue but I think it should be made clear to people who like to host contests.
      • Absolutely. It just seemed to me that their regulations were tighter then than they are now. Your ideas are good.
