I like the idea. It would be rather helpful, I think.

I've got 7 tabs open on my computer already, I keep asking myself if I really need more.

I don't think he meant three tabs as the internet does, I think he meant sections like myspace does.

I was actually thinking tabs within the author page. Though that might be how myspace does it, I can't recall.

I don't have the use for it since I keep my page simple, but I think it's a good idea.
  • For the love of everything holy, Kevin, please don't turn AP into Facebook. It's getting a little old.

    Kevin...

I prefer the author pages as they are at present. Those poets that prefer to alter their author pages already do so

Part of my reasoning though is that they look kind-of ugly when they get as long as many people have them.

Being able to split it into "my family", "my favorite poems", and "about me" could be slick...

        Kevin...

I understand your point yet it seems as if it will simply place more constrictions. Those that have incredibly long author pages usually have them in sections already, as do those that prefer less on their pages.

If you implement the change would it be mandatory or optional? I wouldn't mind if it were another option because it would then please those that would like to format their page in that way and also please those who were able to keep their present format
      • Oh I like that idea! The "my family" would probably be my favorite because everyone who i have friended or all of my friends are my family and I love them, I think it would be cool for all of them to have their own tab

I was thinking more 'cocaine nights', 'marijuana days' and 'poems penned when straight'
      • I like the idea of optional too. If the tab titles you mention would go into place, it would be pointless for me. I don't do the AP family thing and I don't keep a list of favorite poems anywhere - About Me is at the top of each page - so I see no benefit.

I doubt I am alone in this.

A choice to have tabs or not would be ideal but perhaps not feasible.

  • It's a good idea and I would use one section for contest ideas and prompts. I often use part of the page for that now. Then I might use another tab for personal info and reflections though I find I am including less of that kind of stuff. Sometimes, I use part of the page for a poem I'm working on or a selection from Old Poetry.

I am sure everyone would have their own ideas re what to include.
  • how about if we could name the tabs ourselves, and have an unlimited number? that way, some might include family, about me etc., as well as contest ideas.
  • honestly, I love how my page is now. I just recently changed my myspace to the new profile thing... and I hate it. I am not computer illiterate, but I find it harder to navigate/change it the way I want it to look.
like Yvette said, if it was an optional thing I wouldn't mind it.
  • i think that it is a good idea, but i think is that it would be a good idea to make t optional

I voted maybe--I have to see it before I can say one way or the other. In my opinion, the simpler the better, but if it is implemented, making it optional would be a good thing...and would probably save you many headaches in the long run. I really don't think that there is a need for two Facebooks, so if this could be a little less Facebooky, that would be wonderful.

Yes. I know gold and silver members, with a bit of fancy coding, can do it (eg. Sharcu's page) but it would be great if free members could too.

it'll make ones page more orderly.

its annoying going to pages that take hours to scroll down by.

I want to see what you mean first. Of course, in the grand scheme of things it is not our choice anyway.

I would rather be able to add a picture to my contests. That would be super and more desirable than tabs on my page.

I think it would be especially helpful for those who have a lot of content on their page to be able to break it up.

    Holy Facebook, Batman!

If a page is far too long with people adding all sorts of things, I just click on the 'show poetry' tab, and bypass all their 'post this if you... abercrombie.... questionaire' things.

I think too that it would be good to make it different tabs
On some pages you really have to scroll endlessly til you find the poems

It's good too have that stuf on but it would be faster to find what you look for if there were tabs
  • I hate to click on someone's page and have to scroll forever to get to what I'm looking for. I think it's a great idea.

The penny hadn't dropped for me until I got round to reading the posts above. I had become irked at the way some people had become self-indulgent to an incredible degree, in telling those foolish enough to read their family recitals all about nothing of interest. I hadn't realised that this could be controlled by curtailing the space to put them. Anything to stop it sounding like an Oscar or BAFTA thanks list!
  • Hmm, I think I went off on a tangent having absorbed and probably responded to all the sentiments and concerns above, in one go lol So I deleted my message and will post my more relevant/personal thoughts and concerns

    1) I hate myspace and facebook, for the fact that I can hardly ever use them without having to wait an age before 33478476 things have finished downloading, and that's if my computer hasn't decided to give up hope and freeze or crash. We already have photo downloading and video streaming on AP these days, and my concern is the more and more "enhancements" are going to result in longer system response times, for all that has to be downloaded. Also note, not everybody has a broadband connection, some use dongles which have a 3gb download allowance, so the more you have to download, the more use of the dongle a site drains from the user. That for me would kill the AP experience entirely - I come here to talk to creative-minded people, to self-publish my poetry online, and to read the work of other poets. That is all!

    2) I have paid for a gold membership to put together a profile page with text, poetry, different fonts etc., to make it informative (and hopefully interesting) for the reader/person viewing my work and wanting to know more. I do not think "tabs for all" is fair on the site-supporting membership-holding users, if the same options were available to a free user as to a paid up one, and meant free users could upload photos to their tabs along with other things; plus if they are only free users, as many on the site are, then they would have nothing to put in the other tab sections anyway. As I use photography on my profile much as a way to illustrate and headline text sections, I would hate for photos and text, for instance, to be divided on different pages by a tab system.

    3) I now like (and others expressed their enjoyment of) my profile page exactly as it is, with the different fonts, sections (which I headline and start with a different photo each time) et al. A space/text-limiting tabbed-out system of profile page would be constricting, and I would hate that. It would likely look clinical and be possibly restrictive ... like that of the "profiles" on Editred.com, and other poetry sites (which I rarely ever use for the lack of creative control they offer).

What would be nice - and I endorse Kevin's comments - is if the ugliness and tackiness of some pages could be eradicated. ie. the "If you know someone who ..." graphic things, those awful, stupid surveys, the kinds of things that often scatter over teen profiles. It makes the site look cheap and nasty. But you know ... I think that over time I have found the use of different backgrounds (on poetry pages) contributes greatly to that ugliness ... whereas a nice white/black/plain background with a font like Book Antiqua (esp if italicized) can work wonders. We can already add photos to illustrate, so those awful garish backgrounds are not essential anyway. The standard AP font, I feel, is rather large and ugly. Perhaps something a little more subtle and classy would be better? ie ... Calligraph, Times New, Verdana, Georgia, Book Antiqua, Garamond and Gothic Franklin are good fonts, and I would suggest keeping the plain backgrounds (ie the different colours, for Border and Page), but omitting the more hectic/garish multi-coloured backgrounds.

A decent profile, I think, should simply contain photographs of the poet, and a bit of auto-biography. Thoughts and personal matter. I personally use the option to hide profanity, and hate seeing it splattered over someone's author profile page - it should be banned from there, though not necessarily in poetry. Profiles are, after all, the first impression point for new people coming to AP, and for those already on AP who first visit that profile. Nice clean, clear layout, a few imported fonts or whatever, if you're a gold member. But the changes should be optional Kevin - because to clear up the "ugly" profiles, by force, would mean people like myself who take time to make an attractive profile, would be forced to surrender that creativity to accept a tab-system that's likely going to seem bland and clinical. I would not want that, and would likely be deterred from taking out a paid membership for it. So to keep everyone happy, you'd need to have 2 or 3 different page styles - the Tab, the Customized, and the Basic. Would that then not make the site seem disjointed in format and style?

But I agree, AP could be more polished in areas. Then, I do feel that whatever is done, should be for the benefit of Reader and Poet/Writer .... not to make the site more attractive to the young, which at times seems to be the case - because that always ends up being detrimental to AP's chances of being a centre of excellence for amateur poetry etc. i.e. I always hide the Chatbox which almost always was filled with flirting, teen-chat, things usually not much related to poetry and which didn't give the site a good "look". Also, though I use them myself at times, and know a lot of people use them, I find emoticons (especially/more so the moving and colourful ones) are also capable of making the site less than attractive.

And a final point, on the subject of what makes AP profiles look "ugly" ... is all the stuff about "cutting". Sure, some people suffer self-harm as a psychological condition, but then there are those who just add it to their page to fit in with the modern "image" of the emo/goth cultures. I don't believe it should be given room on AP, considering we have vulnerable minors, junior-aged kids using the site to learn about poetry etc ... parents can filter out adult content and swearing, and yet the whole cutting thing tends to be "acceptable" on AP, without any subjection to any kind of filtering system. I think THAT should be far more a concern for site-management than whether profile pages would look better split into a 3-tab unit??????

Well, those are a few (hundred) thoughts!

  • I pay for my gold membership. At least give me the option of keeping my page looking the way it does right now. I like mine and will not change it. If it does change, you're guaranteed to hear from me. And I won't be happy.
