This may sound unimportant but I am interested about how most writers compose poetry (as opposed to prose). Do you use a pen & paper, quill or some form of document preparation system like Open Office?
I used to write everything down with a pen or pencil in notebooks that I had purchased especially for the task. As I have become more confident with my typing ability & found that I can type much faster than I can write longhand I have started to compose poetry using Open Office or Abiword rather than my notebooks.
Is this a good thing, or a retrograde step? What do you think? -

Well I wouldn't say effortlessly. It can be very difficult to hit that delete button. Take a lot of will. Unless of course you hit it by accident!!!
It is majorly important to always save meticulously. How many of us have had a writing disappear into thin air without a seconds notice it is about to happen! Not that anything I've ever written is that much of a loss.

I have one of those. Never thought to use it to save my poemy thoughts though. That might be coolish. -
Freeword
The excellent AbiWord 2.8.1 is out now. This can open MS Word documents & if like me, you don't actually have MS Word on your computer, it is a really good alternative. Plus it is freeware.

Think I have two forms of writing. When I am writing a poem, I honestly don't have much of an idea what I'm writing till I have finished, then when it is, I correct any errors and that is the finished poem. Unalterable and final. If I ever rework a poem then it becomes another poem. I would hate to count the number of poems I've started but never finished, it would be many hundred at least.
When I am writing a story, a paper or an entry for a journal, then I am very deliberate and think about what I intend writing. -
I suppose it depends on where I am. At the computer or in my room. I'm usually on the computer, but I keep a notebook near my bed in case I have an idea that sparks out of nowhere. I seem to get most ideas when I'm sleepy. Also, if I want to put it on the computer in the morning, writing it up again is a good way to look over things and change as I go.

I think most people use a combination of paper & a WP. I have found that I am increasingly using Open Office more though.

I'm wondering if where someone writes, say, outside in a peaceful place rather than inside, would have a different affect on one's poetry. I like writing when I'm sleepy but maybe I should try writing under the stars. Different ideas and real beauty inspiring me rather than what's on my computer screen or whatever is on my mind when I'm falling asleep.

I think that a lot of people feel creative when they are near to sleep. It is possibly that you are nearer your subconscious. I tend to get visual images in my mind before I write, but once I start crafting the words that can be more secondary.
Possibly a good imagination & being able to visualise yourself somewhere else is one of the prime qualities of writing.
I also think you will need to write under some very bright stars to see what you are writing lol.

i used to write all my poetry in note books and on paper but as i went through a difficult time in my life i found myself writing too much for my hand to be able to cope with, i switched to the computer which was A LOT faster and i found that i could think freely just with less hand pain! however i now like writing my poems out as it just feels more personal, i can see how i felt during writing by how scruffy it is and for me it just kinda adds something to the meaning behind the words...I dont know ,i guess it depends on your head space and how much time you have aswell. :-)

I think both have their advantages and, at this point, I am comfortable with both. Longhand can be more convenient, I find, but more just for myself.

Remember Enderby, writing poems in the bog! There's a lot of use can be made of paper. Imagine using a word processor to wipe.

Yes, but think of all the trees that will be saved when paper finally becomes extinct. -
Dunno bout paper but i think pens have become extinct, at my house at least. They're only around when you don't care.
