Is that what you see and feel?
-
how could they write anything else? The poems have to originate somewhere, either from within (feel) or without (see). When they make stuff up, it comes from somewhere. It can't come from out in the ether surely. It has to be something the poet is familiar with.
I feel this entry isn't originating very well. I am stumped for words. -

Imagination
Any answer to the question needs à priori common ground defining poetry - and thereon hangs a tale.
Poetry from "within" is not necessarily felt, and that from "without" is not necessarily either seen or observed. Methinks one could draw the line between left brain logic and right brain sensitivity parallel to that between invention and innovation.
Hindsight is useful when defining familiarity and there are some who say that after the first few words a poem writes itself ...

Agree with you
To wrinte is to put down on paper or otherwise what you went through and as such you need to stop & just write down your feelings, either real (99% of the time) or a figment of your imagination, but you really need a certain sentisibility or frustation feeling to be able to sit and write. -
How is nobody rushing to respond to this one?
I write more narrative style stuff than "straight from the heart" type poetry, but even those (if they're good) have a great deal of imagination to them. Sure, the ideas come from what they see and feel, but often it's the WAY in which it is written that makes it interesting to read.
There are thousands of poems about heartbreak, but it's the ones that have an interesting take on heartbreak or a strong imaginative ability to capture heartbreak that are the strong ones. -
'poets are said to be imaginative but don't they actually write what they feel or see'
"See the value of imagination" ~ Sherlock Holmes: The Adventure of the Silver Blaze -
Add "think"
"Think" can't be left out of the picture. I hope we always have a notebook handy ( I even have, but find it embarrassing to use, a pocket dictaphone; batterydriven, so safe in the shower, but you feel really daft using it in the loo), so that a casual remark by anyone which triggers a useful thought doesn't get lost. -
you know poetry can't be confined to seeing thinking feeling. you can't really say what poetry should be. It's different for everyone. I like to play around with perspective. I imagine how i MIGHT feel if i were someone else. Or sometimes i just write because it feels good to. There is no one way to write poetry. it's self expression. Thats the most important thing.
-
And although it can be self-expression, it need be nothing to do with anything you're actually feeling. Each poem, however good or bad, has to be able to be complete in itself, and preferably understandable, but certainly capable of standing on its own.
-
imaginative means to be able to create images in their heads
-
Create? Sometimes the images create themselves, it seems. But that's a technical detail.
-
mine are all personal emotions
i write my emotions, whether they are happy, sad, angry, dark, etc. I know exactly what all of my poems were written in reference to. It has to be from the heart and soul, or it's only writing, not poetry! -
Control
But you need to keep them under control, a bit like a horse under a fairly tight rein, so as to make the most of your emotions, maximize their intensity. Otherwise they just sprawl.
