Stereotypes?

Are there really stereotypes of people, or are they just groups that people get cast into to make it easier for others to choose whether they are able to accept them or not?

    Sorry, but I have to . . .

    Everyone's a little bit racist
    Sometimes.
    Doesn't mean we go
    Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
    No one's really color blind.
    Maybe it's a fact
    We all should face
    Everyone makes judgments
    Based on race.

That's pretty much what stereotypes are. If people are doing that then stereotypes exist. It's a bit like asking "Are there really trees or are there just big green leafy things covered in bark?".

I have always believed; a person is who they wish to be. You can't really figure that out, until you know them. (And I mean really know them.)

For example...my mother and brothers; I know what type of people they are. I have lived with them, I have been through everything with them. I know when they are having a bad day, and I know when to be happy with them on a great day. With that being said, I really can't see how you would get all that from a stranger. I don't think people have a problem accepting people...humans have a hard time giving up time. It takes time to get to know someone. It takes time to tell the difference between this person and that person. Frankly, I doubt some want to put in that effort. It's a shame, but on some level we all do it from time to time.

Does Play-Doh still exist? It seems like something Health & Safety would have umm, outlawed.
        • Really?
It's nontoxic and a great toy for kids...fosters creation, helps motor skills...

there was a kid in my class who use to eat play-doh though...I bet it tastes good...nice and soft...

It probably tastes salty. Oh, wow, yes, that kid couldn't have had much fun on the toilet.

When I was a child, I played with the (original and superior) British alternative - Plasticine. Apparently you can't eat that, though.
            • I love plasticine! XD

Did you ever just get bored and roll it all into a big ball, and then regret doing so after it all turned brown?

                You're right, of course.

What did you play with when you were a child? Were you one of those butch girls who built airfix planes, owned a model railway, collected diecast cars and traded football stickers with the boys?

Yes. I played scalextric and subbuteo with my brother. And lego and I had a rocket as well. Ooh and Mechanix:

I did have a Barbie when I was about 5... and a little pink convertible... but I realised that all my brother's toys were far superior.

You're always mentioning this brother of yours... if you love him so much, why don't you marry him!

Yes, toys aimed at boys were far superior. Boys had action figures/dolls too, but I never played with them... 'cause I wasn't gay.

Ah, yes, Action Man. All those action figure/doll things are shit toys.
What did you play with other than plasticine, then?

We were poor, so whatever I could find in the local landfill, I was allowed to play with. I played doctor with the hypodermic needles I found in the medical waste bin...

                        That's not quite true.

Lego was my favourite toy, followed by my model railway, followed by my Matchbox diecast cars. Oh, I had toy soldiers, too. I did spend a lot of my childhood BMXing around the block, 'cause that's just what kids of the 80s did. Oh, and, sometimes my eldest brother would let me play on his Commodore VIC-20 and Amstrad CPC464.

                          I didn't think it was.

                          Yeah, Lego is the best!
There's a boy my age who spends pretty much everyday BMXing around my street and the local park. I sometimes think he should come to the pub with everyone else, but he's probably much healthier!

Oooh I had even considered computers and games consoles. Sonic on the Sega Megadrive, of course. Then later the playstation and Metal Gear Solid, Command and Conquer Red Alert, Final Fantasy, Time Crisis, Porsche Challenge... Medal of Honour!!
I'm not sure if it was still your childhood when these came out...

Yes it was. In fact, it probably still is the best toy in the world. James May claims it's the model train set. I disagree, because of its lack of portability, the fact that it requires electricity, and that the actual trains themselves cost anything from £40 to £200. £200 for a train! Think of all the Lego you could buy with that.

Oh, yes, chavs have ruined the BMX. We all had Raleigh 'Aero Burners' and rode them up and down steep slopes innocently. Nowadays, chavs have Haro Freestylers and ride them up and down off licences, waving knives and guns at everyone.

Back in my day, computers were capable of displaying both black AND white. They had the capacity to display at least 2 whole pixels at any one time. That's not entirely true. My early gaming experiences involved the NES, Master System, C64 and Atari ST. We had the very latest 386 PC, too, which had whole megabyte of ram and clocked at a massive 12 MHz. I did eventually get a Mega Drive, though.

Other than just basic lego where you make whatever you want, I had a lego hospital set and a lego police station set. Oh, I really want to find them now. You've put me into full on nostalgia mode.
This is the exact one I had!

I suppose it's not the original Lego or anything, but I loved it.

They are very skilled on their BMXs with all the waving of weapons and riding at the same time.

It's pretty amazing how much things have changed in not very long! Although, I don't know what a lot of those are! I only recognised the Amstrad one because of Alan Sugar...

He does. That's not Lego! That's an abomination! It's just one massive block and a pile of stickers. No, Lego stopped being Lego after about 1996. If you're a loser, you might like this website: http://www.brickset.com/browse/ You can browse by theme or date. The late 80s/early 90s sets are obviously the best. Early 80s stuff didn't really look like anything, late 90s sets consisted of a couple of huge blocks so kids couldn't swallow anything.

I know, it's amazing. When Doom Shareware was released in about 1992, I thought it looked life-like. Nowadays, you can see just how unrealistic the blocky 2D sprites are. I wonder what it's like to look at some of today's games (which are life-like) through the eyes of a child. When I was a kid, I'd spend weeks playing games that only take about 20 minutes to complete today. We still just about used our imagination. I'm pretty sure kids don't need to anymore.
            • Never heard of it...when I go overseas, I'll have to purchase it...

have you ever played with silly putty?
I use to chew on that...never swallow, but when my teeth use to hurt, it was soothing

                • It could:
-be molded, pulled, and twisted like clay
                  -bounce like a ball
-stick to the wall without a mark
                  -pick up newsprint
-"It is used in large quantity by physical therapists for rehabilitative therapy of hand injuries."
-"Though primarily used as a toy for children the material is also used therapeutically for stress reduction. In the home it can be used to pick up dirt, lint, and pet hair, and because of its adhesive characteristics it was even used by Apollo astronauts to secure their tools in zero-gravity.[1]"
