<< reply to 'What do emos become when they grow up?' by hendiadys
I think emos are definite candidates to be fired into outer space! -
<< reply to 'I think poets are flies and emos are the maggots. You only start being a poe' by DeathLight
It is really hard to kill a maggot. Even if you stomp on them they survive somehow, But for a fly all I need is a flyswatter.
But to be honest I am not sure my take on emo as I don't rightly know what emo is. I was just beign a smart ass. -

but that was what you just did.you are saying how emo poetry is all i-cut-myself-to-feel...but have you ever actually taken the time to understand how it actually helps some people.it's not just for show. -

we're trying to open up.but we're just getting shit for what we are feeling.it's kinda hard to write other stuff when that's all that is acceptable. -
<< reply to 'Emo writing is... blech. It's for angsty, immature teens. Now, I'm all for emo' by FluorescentFixation
there are lots of crappy emo poems, but some do make me feel something, which is rare, so i need to have that in my life.i don't want to be alone in what i feel.even if most people only want attention, i want the support. -
Emo isn't a genre of anything and it's certainly not a genre of poetry. The very fact that it's called Emotional (and it's actually called EMOTIONAL HARDCORE, as explained below), as though it's somehow cornered the market on anything involving emotion is asinine.
Emo (or at least what people incorrectly call emo nowadays) is a music scene that is more or less based on fashion and to a lesser degree a really bad derrivative of the Hardcore (hence the name emotional hardcore) genre called "metalcore." It's not the "emotion" in the music that makes it laughable, it's the fact that these bands go out their way to make a caricature out of their feelings, as though they somehow feel "more" than other people, then write overly dramatic songs to catchy hooks and riffs to tie it into a song.
Further more, what makes emo emo is the style of music that accompanies it, the words are ARBITRARY because it is defined by the sound of the instrumentation. Therefore, definining emo as a genre of poetry is not only incorrect, but stupid, not to mention the fact there hasn't been an emo band since the 80's.
For the same reason there is no Punk poetry because musical genres are defined by the music, not the words, despite recurring themes that tend to come up in such genres. -

Emu wrote poetry? What would Rod Hull have thought of that? -
What do you thick about Emo poetry
I don't thick about Emu at all. Why didn't he just start a show of his own? -

Your sense of humor is just so on target.

People who write emo poetry because they actually are depressed and angsty should not have the poetic community biased against them, because although they may be crappy poets, they are writing as a way of venting and expressing, or even as a way of staying alive. I remember back in the days when I wrote emo poetry, it was because I had no one else to talk to. Venting is important if you have angsty emotions locked inside you, and calling yourself a poet does make yourself feel romantic and good about yourself, even if you are a crappy one. People should try and understand the true emos of the world, who are not poets, but are most certainly suffering souls.
Some of these people coincidentally do turn up good poetry, while others write crappy poetry. And this is why being emo often leads to becoming a poet who can write happier poetry on wider subjects. This doesn't always happen, but that's why so many poets start from emo-ness.
Also, it's true, emo poetry is easy to write. Tragedy is easier to write about than happiness because in the course of a lifetime, sad things happen more often than happy things, and people know that emotion well. Also, blood and darkness and knives et al used to be very strong images (before they became cliche). This may be why a lot of people who aren't depressed started writing emo poetry too.
An emo poem could be crappy, but that doesn't mean the author is too. My rule is to understand before I judge, and to always judge a poem two ways: first, for the emotional origin of it (especially if it tells a true story), and second, for the technical stuff (such as figurative language and word choice, etc).
My rule for life is that with understanding comes tolerance. Let us recognize the necessity of emo poetry's existence and tolerate it. We do not need to love it, and it's okay to be annoyed by cliche angstiness - but let's not make 'emo' such a negative stereotype just yet. -

<< reply to 'emotion is what makes poetry good!!! that is what poetry is all about' by Behind.These.Eyes
not necessarily i don't usually write poetry based on emotion. It's usually more imagining. -
-
Isn't imagination "emotional"? You can say all you want about how it's best to avoid emotion or work from a place without it, or claim, like Holck that it starts with a "word" and that may all be true, but unless it evokes emotion in others, it fails.
