When I publish a poem on here do they take the copyrights?
    Do all right remain mine?

You keep the copyrights, only granting us the rights required to post the poem online for you. You can delete it at any time....

  • Hello Rasperry,

  • I am new to this and have a lot of poems that I have only shared with a few friends but would like to add them to this site, any suggestions?

Kevin--I know that if I post a poem here on AP, it is considered to be published. Does that remain the case if I remove it? Presumably, it does, but I wondered whether it would still be possible to submit such a poem to magazines if it has ever been seen here, as many magazines want first publishing rights.

Also, if I post a poem here and label it 'noguest,' does that constitute publication?

That is known as "unpublishing" and technically, you can submit it for first rights publication, as long as it has not become "archived" (after a certain amount of time on this site), which is something I myself recently ran into.

If the poem is in a list that idenifies it as a certain form, it is easier for an editor who is checking the title in combination with the form (such as a sonnet) and have that come up. He asked me to remove one fresh poem from the site because it had not yet been "archived" (it was fairly new) and that he would consider, but another, which had been up for a year, he wouldn't consider.

This may or may not always be the case and I think a lot of places aren't that strict when you are publishing on-line in a critquing community like this. They will allow you to leave it up or take it down and still publish it in print. It just depends. If you put it in "noguest", they can't search for it unless they are a member of AP.

Is there a way to know if a poem has been "archived?" I have a number of poems I posted on here that I have considered submitting and want to make sure I do not go about it incorrectly.

        Thanks!!

I'm not sure but I think anything over a month or so old becomes "archived". Of course, if you delete it, it's no longer there. The reason the editor could see that mine was archived was because I left it up when I submitted it - like I said, some editors do not mind if it is left on a site such as this for critiquing purposes... but others, like this guy, expect you to take them down after a month or so, after your critiques. To me, I would rather have them all archived somewhere though because what are the chances of finding a publisher? Especially with a small time internet publisher - those will just disappear after a while anyway, as I can personally vouch for. Unless it's making it into print, I would not delete it.

Got it, thanks!! I had misunderstood what you meant about archiving. I am going to pursue getting published in print (I honestly know little about internet publishing, and kind of feel that it's less "real" if it's not in print, though that may be a bit foolish.) Is there ever any reason to delete before the publisher accepts or is it only necessary subsequently? Also, do I let them know they are on here?

As someone who knows the world of publishing a bit, if you would let me know if you think my poems are quality enough to get published, I'd really appreciate that.

I would look at the submission guidelines of the kinds of magazines or journals you are hoping to write for; they should clarify any questions as well as give you an idea of type and caliber of poems they publish.

The reason that you might take your poems down is so that an editor who receives your submission doesn't then run a google on them to see if they are previously published, which is what happened to me. Perhaps you can avoid that by putting it in noguest if you intend to send something out but don't really want to delete your history of work here.

I don't know how often editors are saying that they can't be internet published or if they would still be willing to publish it if you took it down.

I pulled the "Poet's Market" out of the library and it said that if a poem has ever been on a site that did not need a password to view the poems, publishers who do not accept "previously published" work will not accept them. I wish I had known that before I posted without putting "noguest" in my categories as that would have made the difference. I'm going to have to do more research I guess.

Ea--Thank you for your answer! That helped a lot. I think what I will do then is simply not post anything here that I want to submit for publication. That just sounds a lot easier.
