I was wondering if we could bring the serious board back? If we bring it back the teen board and the pub can be separate places where people can have fun and start whichever topics they choose and the serious board would be geared towards serious topics obviously.

I tried one recently

Thanks for the link.

The problem is who chooses what is a serious subject? What might seem a serious topic to you and I might not seem serious to Matt (for example).

It's clear enough that something like the Song of Solomon thread in the poetry forum was intended to be serious and it's clear enough to anyone following it that someone was sabatoging it by posting lines out of order. I made the suggestíon to keep it serious and posted an additional thread for "thoughts, both serious and humorous" about the Song of Solomon for people to do whatever they wanted, but, interestingly, when I ticketed the problem spot in the original Song of Solomon thread, I was told by a moderator anyone can post whatever they want in it and the moral of the story is: it's impossible to keep preserve the sanctity of a serious thread.

I plead guilty for posting one out of order but I wasn't trying to sabotage the topic. It was more being a bit silly and not thinking about others pleasure.
So yes, I think it's difficult to preserve the sancity of a serious thread.

I know you didn't mean me ea. But I was guilty once! I would hope the Mods would be fair and even handed with everyone when it comes to deleting posts!
-
-
It never feels "fair" when it happens to "you" but when it happens to "you" repeatedly, even while your own requests for deletions on your own posts go ungranted, it really feels unfair.
P.S. I would appreciate your not responding to this comment. It isn't about you, it's about me. -
-
It's not fair
post on a different board
opps
I should have read the post script
now, you'll have to punish me
feel free to be self righteous

I understand that, threads rarely stay on topic, but a board made specifically for serious threads should give the idea that the people in that board are going to more or less stay on topic.
Don't get me wrong I have no problem with people wanting to stray off topic, I don't really care, for other people it may be a bit intimidating to go to the Pub and that alone prevents them from starting a thread there. But with a serious board anyone could come and without feeling intimidated.

The only solution I can think of is self-regulation, most of the boards operate that way.
-
-
howdoes a conversation self regulate
by bullying deviants off a topic? -
-
We don't have to bully more like ignore.

There's always the cafe... which seems to have some serious topics.
Even if they're not serious, then start one.
Most topics stray from serious when different opinions get posted, and the originator doesn't want to listen to any opinion but their own. It turns into an argument, which soon becomes some farce.... then no one but a few actually post to it any longer, since everyone else couldn't give a damn any longer. It's like... there are many topics on the policy forum that have sunk to argument and insults that have nothing to do with the topic... people even post things that have nothing to do with 'Allpoetry Policy, Complaints, Suggestions'.
You(collective) can't control what others post, but you can control your replies to them. Not rising to their pettiness goes a long way to keeping a topic 'serious', or on-topic. -
-
I'll give the cafe a shot. Hopefully it'll surprise me.
-
-
Probably the best way to keep a thread 'on-topic' would be to totally ignore the responses which deviate from the thread in general.
-
-
or ask them to stay on topic people like to be adressed
-
-
Sometimes that can have a negative reaction. Not everyone likes to be told how to act.
-
-
most like to be informed of the guildlines
they can be ignored afterwards -
people like when they are asked to contribute
