Do you think we should have old poet of the month for those 40 and older?

    No.

    What would be the point?

    • Expressions of appreciation received for my mature talent, wit, charm, good looks and stellar character - especially over and above that given to my peers - are pretty much my raison d'etre. I thrive on such ephemeral recognition, and I am not sure I could endure my existence without it. So long as I was the first and most frequent recipient, I think being named Old Poet of the Month would be a fabulous honor.

But what kind of a bright young thing imagines 40 is old?

    Hello jogn,

The regular poet of the month is a variety of ages from 20-100 plus.

The regular poet of the month is also old members, new members, etc. It's a variety of people.

We do that and the young poet of the month.
We do the young poet of the month for obvious reasons.

So I clicked on the Young Poet of the Month, August '08
    from the front page

    and the poet sounds smart

    anyway
    at the end it read
"There is ABSOLUTELY NO Bashing or Insulting ALLOWED against another member of this site. Please refrain from such behavior. It Will be Reported."

and I saw no comments on the collumm
nor was I able to make one

A reminder of the rules is sometimes good.

We've been disabling comments for awhile on columns to encourage personal interaction.
      • lol...

        'to encourage personal interaction'

in other words, someone (i don't know who ) interacted in an unpleasant way on one of the member of the month columns, and rather than deal with that one situation and move on, make a blanket rule that punishes everyone.

Sorry, I know you mean well, but i know why they really stopped allowing comments on those columns, and that reasoning you guys keep offering for stopping the comments ... contradicts.

There are a lot of reasons why the comments are locked that I won't mention here, and that's just one of them.
          • I'm really not attacking you..
I just think.. why bother with the cheesy explanation.

There doesn't need to be one. If you can't comment you can't comment.

Being on that front page puts people at risk of being harassed, even by nice comments, for days... that is reason enough to stop comments there...

The reason why we put that there is we get members that are confused iming us and wondering why the comments have been disabled. To save the hassle and confusion we put that there.
  • No, I say this because I've-I think we all have- seen several young poets(teenage poets) write with more insight and skill than most of the poets over the age of forty.
Respectably, I think it's pointless to start an 'over forty poet of the month.'

thought there was no bashing here, you up set some older writers
      • excuse me, I don't think I've bashed anyone. If your feelings are hurt, I'm sorry. I was simply making a point that it doesn't sound like a wise choice. don't make it a practice to bash anyone when I'm not in the pub, where it's expected. I was blunt in my comment, you seem to have deliberately overlooking my last remark where I said 'respectably it seems pointless'
        • Well, I'm abashed. I think someone did some bashing and got me by mistake! To whom do I appeal for a salve for my wounded feelings?

Y'all play nice! Riposte ever so gently; parry and thrust with good humor and respect, with comprehension of your opponent's address.

It's all fun until somebody gets an eye out or is sent to time out by the site managers for escalating rudeness or crankiness.

The main reason why there are two different ones is the answers and questions obviously can't be the same. What an older one can answer, a younger one might not be able to. That's just one of the many reasons.
        • that's really not a problem, having one for youths and one for everyone else. the problem comes in with the idea of adding to the list another for the elderly, there's no need for it to go that far.

Yep. We do four things per month.
Group Spotlight, Poet Of The Month, Young Poet of the month, and Active Contest Member Spotlight...

I think that all the basics are covered lol & then some
  • lol...

    i'm sorry

    no
  • I love to see elder ones receiving notice and respect and I sincerely care for people of all ages. But adding to the list of poet of the year, month, or week, is, in my opinion, just adding to something that is becoming ridiculously malpracticed poetically speaking.
Something that is supposed to move a person to feel honored through a much deserved reward is turning into nothing more than a battle of wits.

    • It's all pretty subjective in any case.

Each one who stays on the site long enough and posts poetry, contests, comments and columns is going to build a fan base. We are also going to find ourselves drawn to the works of certain individuals more than to others. This may be for many reasons starting with personal preferences and perhaps ending with personal growth and broader, deeper appreciation of the literary arts.

I have no idea of how AP site managers determine who is to be spotlighted or recognized. However diligent, conscientious and fair they strive to be, to me they are just folks on the site with whose judgment I'll either agree or not.

Still, congratulations to all who receive any positive recognition for their creative efforts and participation here. Be it a site spotlight, a contest win or generous applause, a little approbation is a pleasure to receive, and it's a cost-free way of making another's day just a little nicer.
      • Actually I find myself agreeing with you completely.

Also, I don't even read the columns of poet of the month(may check whom it is, that's all) I've often noticed and felt that in some way it's based on who is liked most rather than whom deserves it most through their work.

I think there should be a dish washing poet of the months

corse I couldn't expect to when the first year
      but enventually
  • I have been a dishwasher. It is a noble profession, without which the world would be much less sparkling and squeaky clean. Fine china would be a thing of the past, relegated to museum collections. Fine dining would be salads and coldcuts from paper plates with plastic utensils. Greeks would have nothing to smash at weddings, and Jews would have no wine glasses to crush. Civilization as we know it would cease to exist. AP would do well to consider Matt's suggestion, for it may be the salvation of our society. Or not.

Dish washing also gives many-a teenager a summer job.
    • I was a dishwasher too.

I hated every minute of it.

It's certainly thankless, but not noble.

I like to no what a simple suggestion has to do with bashing. The young need to be praised for their efforts, the middle honored for their endurance, and the mature recognized for there contribution. I don't see anything bashing or indifferent about it.And dish washer need love.
    • I am sorry that I laughed. The fact is, many of the 'mature' around here, aren't as mature as you would think.

I don't like agism .. even in the name of rewarding. I kind of get why they do the young poet of the month, but even that ... seems like we could do without it ...

Poet of the Month .. as it is, is a less than perfect feature, and I tend to skip it, I don't feel like the whole site is involved enough in it. It misses the point somehow.

Anyway, good luck with your endeavor, I do hope you find an answer that pleases you.

  • It's called Member of the Month now. You would think that would automatically rule out the ladies, but the current MotM is a woman. The selection criteria must be of an exceptionally esoteric nature.

I apologize for that ! Its really in the hand of AP and the majority of those who responded feel it is not a good idea. So I will delete it on July 28th 4 pm. For those of you that thought the reasoning was sound start an over something group I'll join.
    • No, no, the only one you have to convince is Kevin. The rest of us bozos can chase our tails! Stick to your guns.
  • Poet of the month is just another tiny blip on the radar of my unimportance. Another distant dream never to be mounted! lol
