I know emo is actually a type of music, thatit is short for emotional, and that not ALL emo's cut. (I'm supposedly "emo" and it angers me that people hate them so bad to the point of starting anti-emo riots! So what if we are emo? It doesn't kill YOU does it? What do YOU care???)
Please explain this to me because seriously, I cannot see the point in these stupid anti-emo riots and anti-emo people...

  • Oh come on, another one?!

The site should just set up a system where an insta-ban is issued whenever a topic like this is posted. Bleh.
  • Also, you seem to know little about "emo". "Emo" is not short for "emotional".
    • ...It's not? And I'm being serious here. It's NOT?
    • I know that one cannot 100% understand or comprehend "emo", but before posting this topic I did my research, thank you very much, and at least 95% of my closest friends are also classified as "emo". And yes, it IS short for emotional. Notice the EMO in EMOtional?!? >.> And even if you think it's not, I have plenty of proof it is... I'm just too lazy to write it.. I also say that you don't HAVE to reply to the topic, and there's freedom of speech, and this was created over plain curiosity. You don't like it, you don't HAVE to read it.
      • You're kidding me, right? "Emo" is short for "emotive hardcore" or "emotional hardcore" (note: not the same as simply "emotional"), and stems from the Washington D.C. hardcore punk scene in the '80s. Lern2research.
        • Ah, so THAT'S what it means... Well, I did say it had to do with music too. lol, but thanks for the extra info. Now, I still want to know, why DO peple hate emo's so much?

People hate it because, like many trends, it got picked up by a bunch snotty, whiny teenagers who probably have never lived a bad day in their lives, and yet continue to lament how awful their lives are.

Yes yes, I realize not all emos are like this, but the vast majority sure seem to be.
            • Strange, because the people I have met that are "emo's" aren't whiny, they're usually just scared to express themselves... They keep telling me that when they meet me they feel they can finally pour out their soul to someone... I don't mind though... ^.^
        • lol Don't knock me on this one, I'm just making an observation that it seems almost like it's become a religion in some cases as well. ._.;;;;;;; Is that true, or am I just crazy? ._.;;;;
          • surely
they must having I dying need to pour tapioca into the void of their unacknowledged souls
  • ... Sorry, you totally asked for this

No, it’s not short for emotional. It’s emotive hardcore. A genre of music that I tend to really enjoy. But I can’t refer to it as the abbreviation ‘emo’ anymore because as soon as the word pops up people assume that I’m talking about this new trendy crap. ... You guys are giving me a bad name, just so you know...
You're contradicting yourself. You know that emo is actually a genre of music. And yet you still claim to be emo?
'Emo' as a stereotype has recently become associated with groups of teenagers who pretend to be depressed just for the heck of it, hurt themselves for attention. etc. I don't need to tell you this, you already know all about it.
I'm not saying that these things are true about you. But as soon as you stick the 'emo' label on your forehead people are going to presume these things about you.
Don't try to tell me that emo's just are people who are more free about their emotions/expressing themselves. And don't try to say that emo's don't even care about what people think ANYWAY. Anybody who spends that much time and money on their appearance obviously cares. I have a firm belief that people who decide to call themselves ‘emo’ are people who, for whatever reason (low self esteem perhaps?), would prefer to be hated.
You don't dress emo. You dress scene. I love the scene fashion, but kids have to stop allowing themselves to be defined by what they're wearing. Look at your display picture. The typical bleeding mascara, the black nails... what are you really trying to tell the world about yourself?
The world gets so sick of people who are just trying to be 'more special' than everybody else. You're going to get crap about it. People think this about emo's. We all have to deal with it. As a therian, I have to put up with mockery. Everybody has something that it’s easy to be made fun of for. But whatever it is, quit trying to use it to attract attention. Quit flaunting your so-called-pain for all the world to see because you know full well that that’s exactly what the people who stereotype you want you to do. They want an excuse to shoot you down, quit making it so easy for them!
If you really do have a hard life, if you've been bullied or abused or whatever then it's ok to be sad. If you have a mental illness that’s totally ok too. But acting depressed because its cool gets really irritating after a while! Most ‘emo’ kids have parents who love them and pay for their education and feed them and wash their clothes and then fold them on their beds every morning, middle class homes, a relatively safe country to be living in. Cheer the fuck up, your life doesn't suck that bad! The real reason that you're getting people who seem to be against you is because you have adopted a stereotype that you know full well you will be looked down upon for. The real reason that everybody seems to hate you is because somewhere along the way you got down on your knees and begged them to. NOT because they can’t handle how in touch you are with your feelings.
And you're dang right, not all emo's cut. In fact, before 'being emo' became so trendy and fashionable and all that crap, people who had problems with self injury were able to have their problem taken seriously. Now whenever somebody is actually in real danger society sticks it's tongue out at them and just says 'quit being so emo'. Feel like you're the victim of a real injustice? What about people who have REAL probalems are are not taken seriously anymore? They told Amer to quit being so emo and he died a few months later.
I’m not going to riot against you. I’m not anti-anything. You're probably a really nice person. For all I know, you could be the freakin nicest person in the world. But do you see now what’s actually going on? Heck, half of my closest buddies dress scene and listen to emo. And I love them to bits! But the rest of this trendy crap... just no.

    I care
    • One thing, yes I agree with you completely, and as for my pic, I dress the scene sometimes, and I don't claim to be emo, I said that that's what they call me. I listen to emo music, and yes, not all emo's cut. Tell u more later brb
    • Beat you to it.
  • Fooish Mortal rules

'Do not start *A_N_O_T_H_E_R* thread about being emo'

Just making sure, you get the, aother, part...
  • dont listen to anyone who makes fun of ur opinions they aint worth it
  • Because when there are hippies in the vicinity, how can you compete?

  • they're only interested in your reaction
  • I've read through soem of this and some of this and I thinks some1 is being unreasonable... Acually EMO is short for emotional.. that is one def of it.. sure there can be others. I also have a lot of "emo" friends and most of us arnt "whiny" we just arent afraid to feel. Preps are ho's (no offence lol) who are too stuck up to admit that they too have problems... And honestly there is nothing wrong about "whining" because it is good to let go of your stress abdn breath once in a while. Because people like me have to "whine" and let it out or they have anxiety attacks. And everyone does have bad days. We should never compare our probs to another,, its unhealthy. Bad days are bad days and until you have lived someone elses life dont tell me that their bad day is not bad. I f'n hate that. Anyway, I'd rather be emo and admit I'm not perfect then pretend it's not real and go get drunk and have sex to forget about. Sorry but I think emos are more functional than anyone else, because they dont live in some messed up fantasy they live in reality and arnt afraid to recogonize it. sorry to be a bit of a btch and all but this is true stuff man, more power to ya and your friends Angel
    • "Acually EMO is short for emotional" -- Wrong; see my post above about this.
    • Also, you make the mistake of assuming that anyone who doesn't act emo is out having sex and getting wasted all the time. I can assure you, this isn't the case.

Your stereotypical attitude toward everyone else that doesn't whine about everything is just as bad as the people you're trying to rail against.

Yeah, my only emo friend is my only friend to ruin her digestive system doing drugs and alcohol before she was 17. She was sterotypical emo then, now she is just a music lover. She also nearly got pregnant a couple of times, any sterotype that emos don't get wasted and have lots sex is a lie, a total lie.
        • I think you and I have come to an agreement on this.

I'll be expecting a call from Satan shortly. He'll no doubt want his Hellfire and such back.
        • HEY! I have emo friends and no, none of them get wasted and/or have sex. I am not saying anything about stereotypes, so you saying that emo's not getting wasted is a lie is totally crossing the line. As far as I'm concerned, most stories of sex and drugs in my country (like, 98% of them) have been from so-called "pimps". Now, whether THEY do anything wrong, or whether they don't, it's THEIR problem, but please don't go saying that emo people are like that, because you can also just like the scene, or the music, or both and NOT be that way.

I said the sterotype they don't get wasted is a lie, just like with every other group there will be emo's who get wasted and those who don't get wasted. But to say that emos don't get wasted in a blantant lie and a false sterotype.

Please read what I write before making silly replies that make it seem like I am saying all emos are like my friend.
    • And everyone does have bad days

      yes
but when I have bad days
      account don't get deleted
  • also.. read through the long post.. even tho I dont dress like either of the following I'd rather dress in expensive dark and black stuff then wear the typical mini skirt with a thong hanging out of my ass and a push up bra to make my little boobies (wich they are lol) look bigger and stick a screw me tonight sign on my head and walk around looking stoned.. yup black sounds a lot better than that lol
    • Umm... That's just PART of the culture we live in. It just so happens that I know people frm my church that are perfectly fine dressing modestly (as am I usually) and they don't listen to emo music, in fact, they claim to never have heard it before.
      • that would be me too, its just in my school at least most of the people who dont dress like goths or emos dress like whores.. and its annoying sorry to generalize, that was wrong. It's just that I my school its pretty much 40% dark 40% whore 20% modest
        • YEs, but please bear in mind that not ALL enviroments are like yours and people might take that personally and feel very insulted.
    • Right, because spending a small fortune on clothing you probably won't be wearing, say, in five years is definitely the way to go.

Why do people hate emos? Because a hundred people start silly annoying thread about them and we've heard it all a hundred times before. That is why people hate emos.
  • why do people hate?
  • I dont hate emos everybody has there on style and there on you unique way of expressing things or themselves so if ppl has a problem with it just tell them to kiss yo ass lol
    • Yesh, we should do that more often. But I wonder still why people do anti-emo riots... It's deppressing.
  • I don't hate anyone who decides to call themself an emo. I just think their idiots. I thought I was emo about 4 years ago. Back in the Drive-Thru records days.

But I think if you have to dress a certain way and listen to a type of (rubbish and untalented) music and have stupid catchphrases like "I smoke and drink - Give a shit?" Then you're just really sad. What I don't understand is why people have to follow these trends? I don't have 'emo' friends because their all the same, I like different interesting people who have talents and who are actually interesting, to me someone who follows every trend which will chnage in another 6 months can't be that interesting.
    • I do think that way too, but I don't mind, I mean, I usually prefer ti hang out with people that listen to the same music I do, but if they're careless and cruel (like a so-called friend of mine who doesn't think of me as a friend, lol) then I'd much prefer to hang out with others. I also do hate people who call themselves emo then when the new trend is, idk, pop or something they redo their image and suddenly are pop. That has happened so much with my classmates that what I do is just ignore them. So if people hate emo's so much, why don't they just ignore them?
  • Maybe they tend to use the apostrophe in the wrong spots. Could be, I don't know, since I'm not emo. Don't use an apostrophe and an "S" to make a word plural unless you're referring to the word as more than one. I don't think that made sense. Crap it! Now I feel like a failure . . .
