The Colour of Normal
Of course, the question could be rephrased as 'why is normal the accepted term for the everyday'? I spell colour like this. Many people don't. To me that is normal. -
Normal,
I think that normal is what is accepted by most people at a particular time. Therefore it is forever changing. What's normal today, was abnormal once, or will be in the future. At least that's my take on it. -

From the Jazman
The statement you made"I think that normal is what is accepted by most people at a particular time" is indeed what most people think, and is generally accepted. But lets go deeper into the minds of others as a single unit. The thing I focus on is what you think is normal, for you . We tend to overlook what is normal for self,to consentrate on what is normal set by general standards. However, based on said double standards it is the majority that will judge you. even if doctors rule in your favor that according to your set of standards,is normal. -
The statement you made is actually what society dont need. May I repeat your statement,"I think that normal is a question for sociologists and philosophers". Much respect from the Jazman for your input.

Probably because all they ever do is talk about it, right?
Kinda like this thread. -

Bringing home the Bacon
I've told you those who can't teach, teach sociology. What did Francis Bacon say about philosophers; "they make imaginary laws for imaginary commonwealths; & their discourses are as the stars , which give little light because they are so high": Advancement of Learning part ii.
-
-
Society would be better off with no intellectual pursuits into the social sciences? Care to back that up?

I think that normal is a question for sociologists and philosophers. Normalcy changes with geography moreso than time, so keep that in mind.
I disagree that what's considered normal is "forever changing" there are many social taboos which have remained over centuries. Incest comes to mind. Murder is another one. Every society has a concept of justice, and within the realm of justice often fall taboos that are considered "evil" or unforgivable. -
-
those that don't repent can't be forgiven
as that would set a precident that such actions ar acceptable -
Taboos
That is not strictly true. It is often culturally relevant. The Ancient Egyptians practised incest, brothers & sisters would often marry, because the Pharaohs did it. To the Ancient Greeks Homosexuality was considered virtually normal.
When these two cultures first met they were horrified at each other, incest was an abomination to the Greeks & homosexuality was likewise considered an abomination to the Egyptians. It is one of the first known cases of cultural dissonance in antiquity.
The Ancient Celts would have mass human sacrifices & feast on the brains of their enemies. They also used to murder their own children as 'sacrifices' to their pantheon of gods & goddesses.
As to moral imperatives & categories I suggest you read Immanuel Kant's 'Groundwork of the metaphysic of morals' & 'Religion within the limits of pure reason'.
