This might be a pointless waste of time but I just wanted to say that I LOVE this sight. It makes me feel tottally comfortable being myself. I don't have to think twice about sharring any peice I've written. I love how all of the members respect each other, I've never read about anyone directly bashing another user.

    now for a few suggestions...
    1. Maybe you could add a more...definate catagory system? I don't know much about it but yea...

    2. Okay maybe you could add like a search bar for the contests. Its rather difficult to find contest I want to enter quickly, so add a serch bar where you can type in the topic. Also, it would be nice to have the option of only viewing open contests!

I'm not sure what you mean by the first suggestion, but the second idea is pretty good in my opinion.

There used to be about ten specific categories, then everyone wanted more and more, so kevin made it so that the author typed the category. There are specific categories that are listed just above the category box that a lot of people use, though.

In the "Browse Contest" area, http://allpoetry.com/contest/list there is a 'Browse contests by category' area. There's also an area to view newest contests, or all contest, or even those closing the soonest. All available from the Contest drop down menu in the above menu bar.

      Sorry, scratch the first suggestion

Yes but you have to go through the millions of topics to search for the one you want, instead of just typing the topic you would like to view. Also, along with the open contests you have to search through a bunch of closed contests, which can be annoying whnen your looking for contests to enter.

Just looking for the topic you want seems to be limiting the experience of a challenge to expand you poetic skills. Then again I could be wrong and overstepping my mark as I do not know your background and for all I know you may be a very skilled poet across all poetic forms. For the record I am not having a dig at you because I honestly do not know.

I always look for the topics that I am interested in. (Or, if there's a PW by the description, I'll skip over it... I look for contests to write for, not enter the same thing in over and over). If I'm in a comedy mood, I'll look for comedy contests... serious mood, serious contest. Or, if it's a form I haven't tried, then I'll click on that contest. I'd think that a lot of people do that. Then again, I may be wrong.

I guess the worst part for me is getting really excited about writing a peice for a contest than seeing that it's closed.

Contests close at the start of the day, AP time (located on the Help page). If June 23 is the date, then 12:00 AM, June 23, the contest closes... unless it reaches a host set number of entries before that date. (might be 2 am, which is the start of an AP day... not sure) It used to close at the end of the day, and I wish it would go back to that.

Some hosts let you reserve a spot, but it's best to ask first.

I can agree with both of you ..... if I come across a contest on form I will look amazing what you can learn and tweak your interest. As for doing a piece only to see the contest closed even more so when the site goes down as you are posting only to get it up again and see the contest closed...but I will still post and acknowledge the host/contest in my author notes....I do wonder the reason for entering a contest be it for the bling or the challenge. As for the closure number many hosts elect to close early guess it really comes down to deal with it get over it and move on...just enjoy the challenge and excitement you felt all the reasons behind the write.

the contest can't be for the challenge as the contestants rarely compete

Perhaps. Could be there are so many contests posted daily or not enticing enough who knows that would be up to each person who views the contests. I was thinking more of a personal challenge then you are competing in a way against yourself. The challenge of creating within the boundaries of the contest. Still if you miss the closing date no biggie ... thinking to self 'Oh Bugger'

I guess I like winning and competeing in contests because it gives me the feeling that my poems are good enough to compete with some of the other beautiful peices on this site.

How do you know the contest you want actually exists?

For example, in the search bar you type "Salvador Dali picture prompt sonnets" and then Hey Presto! a contsest appears bearing a Dali picture asking you to write a sonnet based on that pic?

Or am I taking it a bit to litteraly.

lol not that specfic. For example, I want contests that take entries about Abuse, so I would type in abuse. The atvantage would be typing the word abuse, insead of having to search through all the catagories for it.

also, everyone missunderstood what i ment about the contests being closed. When you do contest serches under certain catagories they bring up closed and open contests, if I'm looking for contests to enter I don't want to waste time reading about the closed ones. I forget to check if they're closed or not so I get excited about entering them, only to find out they're closed. I don't like using the newest or closing soon because that limits my catagory.

There is a search window on the 'contests overview' page...

And with categories... if you don't like the default ones listed, you can add your own. If you wanted your own to be listed above the 'popular' ones, well, it wouldn't if we only had a set list of categories
