I have been warned on an image that I posted on a recent contest, that was removed for explicit sexual nature...I labeled the contest: Adult, raunchy, perverted, erotic and any other category deemed fit. Having this removed feels like, to me, a breach of Freedom of Speech, that I assume as artists we have to struggle and fight constantly in society, as to what is appropriate or not...I am offended by Christian and Spiritual poetry,so does that mean to others that feel that way and where Spiritual images are depicted, should they be removed as well? Where does it end, rather the statement that clearly states, "It is the moderator's discretion...I will abide by the rules and I do apologize for overstepping the boundaries and I will comply as I am supposed to. I will be more careful in the image selection I choose, but I am just hurt and feel like my rights as a citizen in a free country are taken. I am not looking to start an argument, nor looking to rebel, I just wanted my feelings to be expressed. I do agree with the suicidal images and all that follows it, but you even say it's ok for marijuana images???
Think about how that affects younger poets, that can see those images, because I am sure they aren't labeled Adult...Think about that.
I feel like all the good I have done, from talking to younger poets and older, who have been suicidal, out of ending their life and being a positive influence to them, but when I run an Adult contest, I fall under scrutiny
for an image, that is marked ADULT. I just don't feel it is fair to me and the others, who have had this warning, as poets/artists. -
totally agree. if it was labeled appropriately, then I really don't see the problem. I really feel that this MUST be a two-way street here! I don't understand why people, seeing it labeled fairly, still click on it knowing they might not like what they see! I mean, come one...we're all adults (who click), so what is the problem. If you don't like it, just walk away. If it were racist or sexist, that's another thing, but it was clearly an image of adult humor! i've seen worse out there...and nothing stopped it!!
♥Rianna -
I also agree with you. If you have labeled the contest 'adult' or 'erotic' or both, then it really shouldn't be deleted unless it's depicting someone being killed or something, as that might make people think that's okay. But something dark and erotic is sometimes beautiful to some poets/users and therefore shouldn't be treated that way.
I too am not a rebel as such, but I do stick to what I believe in.
I hope things do get sorted out though. Always here to talk if you need someone. -
I have to totally agree, if it labelled, then I don't see the problem. Whether it is tasteful or not is irrelevant, because lets face it, common sense prevails that something untasteful would have been highly unlikely to have been posted anyway. So, the only thing I can think is someone clicked on the link to view it, knowing what they would be likely to see just so they could get stroppy and complain.
Either that, or as is just as likely, it was one of the many halfwits on here who don't bother to ready anything that is right in front of their face and clicked to view with even knowing or caring, then got all fucked in the face about it (pardon my French).
I have to agree with all points, particularly some of the spiritual stuff on here, whether that be contest or poem that some people post and get away with, I find it offensive, however, live and let live and all that, I just ignore it. It gets right on my tits that people go out of their way on here to find stuff they find offensive just so that they can complain about it.
And most of them are supposedly adults.

Oooooooooooooh~
It gets tricky when it comes to images~ for as told to me...Poetry is Creativity but that can be defined by individual perspective along with what constitues~ 'appropriate' compared to 'inappropriate'~ I've seen some images that made me go~ Holy Mother of Pearl Jam...
my jaw dropped a few inches
but so are graphic images of reality~ with natural disasters that strike chords~but there are times that chords need to be tapped~ or the human emotion is not touched to evoke emotion to be released (in some)- it is like the Mind- goes frigid along with the Spirit
Pictures are Powerful but so are words
I don't know the depths of the image You mention but imagine You would show in good taste~ to serve a creative purpose. I do understand of what You speak~Best wishes Sweet One

Keep that quill dancing~
and much love~ Desire~*~
-
If you label it adult it should not be a problem, and I do not see why it is.
-
Why are they making such a big deal. Pisses me off that when we want erotic poems we should be able to go full out and not have to worry about things getting taken off! especially the clothes.
-
The image was removed because it violated site policy, which states that you cannot "post images that are pornographic, excessively violent, or otherwise disturbing, as determined by the moderators. Nudity is only allowed on pages that can be added to the adult category."
We did not delete your contest, we only deleted the picture that was on it. The picture was a cartoon picture of a very graphic and explicit sex act, and that is not allowed per policy.
Removal of images of this sort is not new. We try to allow as many images as we can, and this includes nude images, but sex acts, even when marked as adult, are not permitted. As Kevin says, this is mainly a site for writing, and the images are just extra. Its hard to 'unsee' an image once you have clicked on a piece, but not so difficult to stop reading something that you can tell is more than you want to read.
Just trying to clarify what was removed and why.

Actually, not really. Allpoetry is privately owned and when you join the site; right at the bottom before you hit submit it states:
“By joining, you agree to our terms of use.” with a link to the terms of use
http://allpoetry.com/home/guide Also on the terms of use is a link to the site policy
http://allpoetry.com/home/guide/rules which states (under the “you cannot” section #8):
“Post images that are pornographic, excessively violent, or otherwise disturbing, as determined by the moderators. Nudity is only allowed on pages that can be added to the adult category. View the image guide” with a link to the image guide http://allpoetry.com/column/show/991975
In effect when you join Allpoetry you have already agreed to these rules and policies. So no, it is not within your rights to post images or anything that goes against the terms of use or site policy.
Of course the site owner does try to allow as much freedom as possible, but there is a pretty clear list of what is not allowed to be posted here. The moderators follow those guidelines in dealing with complaints on images and anything else that is reported to us.
We do not pick and choose whose images get removed and whose don’t. We receive a complaint, check the issue, if need be research it and handle it within the site policies laid out for us. I’m sorry if you do not agree with it, but in reality…you already have by joining the site.
-
-
The policy clearly states 'as determined by the moderators', and yet you're telling us that you don't pick and choose which images get removed. Which is it?
Consider reading over your posts before clicking the 'Submit Reply' button. -
-
When i was a moderator there was an image room which was regulary checked by moderators and determined whether images were suitable or not...
Unless it has now changed and the image room is no longer...
-
-
I remember that. I'm sure it's still there, otherwise all they'd have to rely on are the complaints of people who can't 'unsee' such soul-scarring imagery.
-
-
No, since the implementation of this new system, images do not have to be approved anymore. We do rely on complaints regarding images.
-
-
Thanks for the clarification, it's interesting, although strange since it seemed to be an aspect of the system that was working just fine. Now, essentially, the few with tender sensibilities end up deciding what's best for everyone on the site.
-
-
As always, just because something is reported, that doesn't always mean it will be removed. Yeah, the old system worked pretty well, but we're used to this one now. lol
-
Only if they see it. I'm thinking that the amount of images has grown exponentially as membership has grown. I'm guessing that what worked three or four years ago wasn't practical anymore (unless you think Kevin ought to employ someone full-time to screen pics).
Personally, I can't muster a give a damn about this issue. I know what a nipple looks like, so pictures are redundant. -
-
a 3% anual interest rate is expodential in growth
and doubles every 23 years
-
-
And?
-
-
to say that something is growing expodentailly
does not mean that it is growing quickly -
-
Which is not what I meant, anyway. If one person posts ten pictures, that means that each additional member will increase the total picture count by an order of ten - exponential. So that 1000 new members will contribute 10,000 pictures - and the membership has grown by far more than that in the last three years.
-
-
so most people post as many pictures as they can?
-
-
I think that some do and some don't. I haven't attached a photo to a poem in years, but I bet for everyone like me there is someone who posts as many pictures as they possibly can - I'm only tossing out these numbers by way of an example.
-
-
fair enough
how many pictures a day are corrently posted? -

Beats me.

it's just a mater of a sql command

The images are no longer checked by the moderators when they are loaded. We only enforce them on complaint. This change took effect when we moved to the "new" AP a couple years ago.
-
-
Yeah now that i think on it, Kevin had a column about it too..when the site changed.
thanks Gypsy

You may want to read my post again Gio and take your own advice. Perhaps the issue is in the reader's interpretation?
Yes the quote states 'as determined by the moderators'.
But my post also states:
"We do not pick and choose whose images get removed and whose don’t. We receive a complaint, check the issue, if need be research it and handle it within the site policies laid out for us."
The site policy is what the moderators use to determine what is and is not acceptable for the site; when we receive a complaint.
-
-
Right, and when you do have to make that determination, policy dictates that you decide what's 'excessively violent', etc. The policy is so vague on the issue that it's completely worthless, and is obviously only there so that you types can justify abuses of power.
-
Wow, sounds like you've a great chip on your shoulder over something.
"is obviously only there so that you types can justify abuses of power. "
And this is relevant how? There was no abuse of power in this issue. I do believe you just like to argue Gio, in which case I am quite done. I believe I've answered all that need be here. Have a nice day
-
First of all, reading comprehension, I was referring to the potential for abuses of power, and rules that allow for such are detrimental in any system. One would think that rooting out these kinds of rules might be a worthy endeavour that all of us here would want to get behind.
Believe what you want, but some of us live in the real world. No amount of trying to paint me as someone who just likes to argue will change that. -
-
True, but unfortunately rules always have gray areas, no matter how concise they are. Something always comes up out of the norm.
I'm not trying to paint you as anything Gio. I'm just trying to answer the post here the best I can and not argue with anyone. -
-
So the solution would appear to be to ignore the problem? That's just crazy enough to work.
The word 'argument' gets a bad rap, in my opinion; originally it had a positive definition: a discussion in which reasons are advanced for and against some proposition or proposal.
(edited to remove insults)
Anyway, I'll stop now, as I'm fairly certain none of this will register with anyone. Maybe I am just wasting my time and energy trying to improve this place. -
-
Gio, if you want to make a suggestion regarding a policy that does not include direct or indirect insults of staff, we will make sure it is looked at. As far as your insults toward any staff members, yes, you are just wasting your time.
Make your suggestion and wait for Kevin's response. We will be sure he sees it.
Any more insulting will be considered harassment.
sym
-
I appreciate your answer on that one Gio
Ingoring issues never resolves them and I do agree with you that there are issues in the policy that need addressed, clarified and amended. Meanwhile we do the best we can with what we have to work with
I do admit to having this very same closing feeling as you many times over the years. "Maybe I am just wasting my time and energy trying to improve this place"
But I do keep trying LOL. I must get to work. Have a good day.
-
There were no insults in that post, Becky, don't threaten me. That's harrassment.
Giovanni, Member -
Gio, statements like
'it irks me that some of your colleagues seem to get their kicks out of snuffing dissenting voices rather than attempt to actually listen to arguments that challenge their comfortable worldview.'
serve no other purpose than to harass staff.
It's an unfair and untrue accusation and made for no other reason than to rile up staff, and you know it.
No threat, just a warning, Gio. -
-
some silence dissenting voices because they don't want certain ideas heard
-
-
Matt, we are trying to make sure this forum is not abused. This is not the Pub. Complaints and suggestions are welcome though, just not abuse!
-
-
-
I know no such thing.
That statement serves the purpose of me expressing what I perceive. If you want to clarify then do so, don't prove me right by trying to snuff my dissenting voice with unwarranted threats.
And you wonder why staff gets accusations like this? Please. -
"Maybe I am just wasting my time and energy trying to improve this place."
what a joke that is

GIo, Mods dont "pick and choose" which images get removed. If someone complains about it, it is dealt with. It used to be that every image loaded to allpoetry went into an image folder and the mods online would scroll through it looking for innappropriate images, but not anymore, if someone complains then it is looked at and if it is deemed innappropriate by staff following Kevins guidelines then it is removed. I had no trouble understanding what she was saying...I think maybe you are jsut looking for a fight...tsk tsk...so unlike you.
-
-
-
-
Why?
-
What part of "privately owned" do you not understand. The owner (and his staff)CAN pick and choose, delete, omit or color your ass purple. It's his site. You agree to his terms when you apply for membership. GEEEEEZE...........
It is NOT a democracy. It is NOT fair. It is NOT about YOUR rights or whining. It is run to the extent that it makes him money and safegaurds him from liability. -
-
a little in insurance in case he destroys your property

I think if they made the contest for a set age limit 18+ that way the younger brats cant get into the contes & see the pics
it would allow you to show the pics and keep those who are the reason for them being removed from seeing them
