Hi Kevin, i was just wondering if maybe in the future you will be putting an option on weather or not people want to delete their accounts, because i have noticed there are so many people who haven't logged into their accounts for a few years.

I was just thinking that it would clean up the site a fair bit and also that there are a lot of user names that would be free. What you don't agree Matt?
      • people can change their user names on whim here

        I wish they couldn't

that would avoid a lot of confussion

but dying is everyones favorite solution
        to fading and failed correspondance
    • in bad weather, especially.

From my understanding his website is setup to where accounts aren't able to be deleted however if one doesn't have anything on their author page (poems etc.) that after not logging in for a good while their account disappears. This is supposed to be true but I know accounts of mine that I created back in 2002-2005 that I haven't logged in for a long while that are still there; of course at least half those are on lifetime bans so that could be a reason. But what's the excuse for the other half?

Of course, some of those names, as Matt mentions, that haven't logged in for years are members who have passed away. Would be quite disrespectful to delete their accounts, whether they had poems on them, or not.

I do agree with you. There are a lot of old accounts that people have not posted anything in that I think should be deleted as well.
        • It's not necessary
memory capacity is greater than input on the internets

I don't care about any of that All I care about is the fact that there are some names people would like to use but can't because of old accounts from members that haven't signed in
            • One could contact an admin for such cases

Oh, then that means old accounts might be deleted >3
                • that's not necessary
the account still could be kept on file
                  if the old user returns
                  those files could be retrieved

I would just like Kevin to answer this question for me.
  • See, the problem is that the people who haven't logged-in in a while wouldn't have used the delete function, anyway.
    • maybe the site needs to do some spring cleaning.

      urr, or summer cleaning now?

But then Kevin couldn't say on his front page "home to 250,000 members" or whatever it says.

I can see deleting accounts that have nothing in them but I have recently noticed that both my husband's account and my best friend from home's account have been deleted and they both had poems in them. My best friend's poem that appeared in my contest that I dedicated to her when I was first on the site, "Memories of Mombo", is STILL IN MY CONTEST but her name is GONE. Does this mean than someday, when I stop logging in, all my contests and comments will remain out there in limbo but without my name on them and without any homepage that anyone can go to?

I had always hoped that both of these very REAL people might come back. I do not, nor have I EVER, opened a second account here. My brother used my computer when he was visiting a couple years ago in order to write his coffee poems and what ended up being the intro - his experience making coffee on the border of Iraq during the Persian Gulf War - to my Coffee Anthology. Read it here: http://allpoetry.com/poem/2007067

Can I expect to see his account expunged in a few more months, too?

yeah, that's fascinating. It seems you are permanently logged in once you are deleted.

My husband and best friend are not dead. Why have their accounts been deleted just because they haven't written anything new since 2006?
They both had poems on their pages! I thought only accounts with nothing in them could be deleted.

I would still like an answer on this - not that I really care so much about my husband's page, since he still has most of his work up at poemhunter - but in terms of my own work, which I consider the contests I hold to be, I would like to know if my page and name will go poof someday, when I fail to log in...

I think a lot of people would be interested to know this is the policy here - even though their pages may have poems on them.

actually, it is a drag that you deleted his page - I sometimes did collaborations with him and would link to his page, with his name as the co-writer. The last one I did was for a medieval knights and ladies one that Sokarjo and her AP husband ran. Let me remind you, I am talking about my actual husband here - not an AP husband.

how totally odd of you to say. Did you not start this topic and is this not the place where complaints are supposed to be aired so that moderators can routinely review our concerns? I simply asked you (directly) why you would say to me "it dosen't seem like he'll be answering this in a hurry !"

    It's arithmetic. Membership numbers = advertising $.
    • Somewhere on this board, you will find a topic where the author complains about accounts being deleted. That makes for some odd maths.

My brother is back in Germany for his third tour of doodie, Kevin, so don't delete his account. It's possible I can rope him into writing here again; he'll be visiting me this morning so we shall see. Remember, Kevin, he's a real soldier, not some miscreant with an imaginary girlfriend.
