Why are we never happy?

Is it just a certain, artistic breed of us that never seem contented with our lot?
I've noticed over the years that some people can stick with and be happy with their choices forever, whereas some of us yearn for thing always yet undiscovered and untamed...I always thought this was an abnormality of mine until I discovered that other creative types seem to share this trait.

I wish most vehemently that I could just be happy and contented as others are, but always feel the pull of the next challenge. Do others get itchy feet too, or is it just me being strange? If so, why?
  • One can be happy even while having the itch to explore the unknown and confront the next challenge. The difference lies in those who do nothing but complain about their circumstances while being willing to do nothing to change it; either that, or they are greedy for the attention/material gain that advancement sometimes brings, and are never sated.

I think the truly happy ones are those who seek the next challenge just because they can, because they enjoy being stretched, and not because they're merely trying to keep up with those around them.

I find it some what funny that you said "Is it just a certain, artistic breed of us" as if only the people, group, or class that you consider your self a member of could feel unhappiness. I'm not trying to make you look narsacistic or anything. I'm just trying to point out that when we feel this sort of unhappiness we tend to out cast ourselves as if we were alone, but we all feel it at a different period of time and most people usually grow out of it. Some of us tend to dwell on what we have lost rather than what we have gained and grow into a sort of unhappiness that lingers on and on. It's all a question of perspective, Next time you feel down don't look at the glass half empty think of it as half full. It seems silly to think about it this way but when done right it tends to trigger an advance in most people.

Everyone has their own definition of happiness, I guess. And no one can make anyone else happy (or unhappy) and to me, I believe happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy. Or not. Yep

cause we are just bored nothing to do.
  • Heck, not all of us are unhappy, I'm completely overjoyed with my current state, and everything around here is as dull as it gets! I think it's a matter of your spiritual and emotional state of being, really.
  • Perhaps you think thisng though to deeply. Like Hamlet.

Exam in three days.. three days, three days...
  • I am usually really a happy person. ^_^ I just have been getting more upset that usual over a certain idiotic person who needs to go hang himself. xD
  • I can't really ever seam to stay on one swubject I stray off into my own little world and everything
  • I think some people are realativly happy people, but some of us have darker thoughts. Like me, I'm always mad. Like I feel like a freakin valcano!!!
  • Reality just doesn't live up to our standards.
  • Perhaps we already are, and fail to realize what happiness is...

My feet are constantly itchy, and I have to have change. So, unless I am abnormal...you're good. Besides, there is nothing wrong with not always being happy, or content, or whatever...I'd even call it borderline unhealthy if you are always happy, because somehow...a spectrum of balanced emotions seems more practical, more right.

Freedom is having the choice to move but to obtain that freedom you need the opportunity to move.
some need to be happy where they are at the time to cange some are motivated to change due to teir unhappiness, some like to change for an adventure or challenge, some for fun. everyone changes some more than others. and btw to be unique should not be weird.

  • Hmmm...

Happiness. I forget what it Feel's like really. I remember being Happy, Just not what it feels like.
  • I dunno about 'never', but then again I don't think we're supposed to be happy all the time either.

well, no one can be happy all the time. Things are always happening to people. Me, well I can't remember the last time I was truly happy....

Craftsmen are proud and happy with their work, artists are critical and unhappy with theirs, so if you want happiness, be a craftsman.

Why, I'm happy and I'm one of us.. of you... you get the point

Well, it's not just you. And I think that these "challenges" can make life more fun if looked at from the right perspective (not that there's a universal right perspective, but rather the perspective that's right for you).

I know what you mean about wanting more... We tend to concentrate on wanting what we don't have, and once we have that ensured, focus on the next thing we don't have. That's because we feel the need for what we don't have more poignantly... to oversimplify it, if you're very hungry AND very thirsty, but you have a lot of water to drink, you'll feel the need to eat more.

But I think it's a matter of how you look at it. Along with these things you want, try to remind yourself of what you have, of your reasons to be happy. Or just do things you like when you can afford it.

I know exactly what you mean, since I'm a rather melancholic person myself. But hey, put it this way, if you have "itchy feet" as you put it, why not be happy that you can and do face these challenges and live interesting experiences?
