Background Contests? Really?

I just was scrolling through the contests, only to come upon YET ANOTHER contest that was not for poetry, but for backgrounds. Is it only me that thinks these are kind of silly in a site dedicated to poetry? These mainly bug me because then the "poems" come up when you click for random poetry, and because they take away from the whole meaning of the site. I don't know, am I alone in thinking this?

I have nothing against making beautiful custom backgrounds and showing them off, just maybe have a poem to go with them, especially for a contest? (although that isn't what this topic is contesting, just my opinion)
  • I agree with you
  • worst are the NO TILING contests

    I suppose it's believed <--(why did I say that?)
    the artist has greater range
    if they need not conform
    to matching
    the left to right
    and top to bottom.

This is a writing site, and contests should require some form of writing. Giving trophies away basically for nothing is not the intent of the contest process or in the spirit that contests were intended.
  • And only gold members can enter them because the rest of us can't upload custom images.

actually silver members can add custom backgrounds. I'm wondering where to look for them. I like the kind that has a border along the left side only and a white or pale background where the text appears.

I do think it would be fun to have people write a little poem for whatever background they present, on its theme or something.
