Automatically showing contest option for multiple entries

I would like to suggest that if a contest setter has allowed multiple entries, that fact should be automatically flagged somewhere. Preferably adjacent to where it tells us whether we can enter prewrites/new poems.

    This would be very helpful.

agreeing with mairi and marcy ...
it would prevent entries being thrown out without notice from contests in which only one entry is allowed, by a contestant wishing to add additional entries ...
an automatic note would be perfect - since contest-hosts (including maa ) often forget to mention how many entries are allowed ...

      thanks for this thread !

  • Yes, indeed. I always state in my rules how often someone may enter, but it'd be nice to have it show up automatically to those who might enter like the prewrite option.

This would be a good idea. When we have haiku workshop/contests here, we usually allow three entries. But having it anonymous, it is hard to know until afterwards if everyone abided by that request. A way for the system to note if multiple entries are allowed, how many, etc. would be very useful.

      Cuoldn't resist this -

      Gravis nunc est meum cor,
      Gravius quam plumbum,
      Quandoquidem hoi polloi
      Clamant me "Tuumbum"!

I know - off topic - but you had to mention "Uranus"!

It's an thought, but it would lead to a whole lot of semi-redundant accounts, with few points in them. I guess you could then gift your points to your main entity and cancel the account, but it seems to be a lot of trouble to go to.

I think asking Kevin if he could kindly tweak the site for us would be a better option.

Could you tell me where this little four liner is from or who wrote it?

there was a contest where I thought I could make multiple entries
and found it useful because it involved
outlining a poem and writing the details in later

When you set up a contest, there are two boxes that you can check. One is to allow pre-writes and one is to allow for multiple entries (from the same poet.) Why does "enter pre-writes" show up but nothing about whether the contest allows for multiple entries?

I agree. People (myself included) forget to mention... I recall we used to have this option and wonder why it's no longer there, because it's very useful, and doesn't seem all that complicated, compared to other features we have.

Oh, actually, I think it'd be better if we could have an option, just as we have it to set how many entries total we allow, so that we might also set how many entries one person may enter. I think that would be a great help to both contestants and contest holder.

I have noticed this too, when the first entry is replaced by the second. It would be nice to know and choose that event, instead of hoping for two and getting only one.

Does it completely delete the first poem? Or does it just keep it in your poems, just not as a part of the contest?

I completely agree, by the way, that you should be able to see how many entries are allowed, if it is merely "multiple" entries, or perhaps you should be able to set a certain number that each person can enter, and then it would show that number.

No it doesn't delete it entirely, just removes it from the contest. It's particularly awkward if the contest doesn't allow pre-writes, because if you decide that your first one was the better poem, you would have to delete it yourself, and re-post it in the contest as a new poem.

I am glad to say it doesn't happen often; but these days if I have ideas for more than one poem for a contest, I usually IM the setter to ask.

I'm hosting a contest now for poems such as these that never see the light of day because they get booted when you enter a second poem. It's not practical to IM the host to ask if they accept a second write because they then know you have already entered and they are trying to keep it anonymous!

There needs to be a feature that shows whether the multiple writes allowed option has been turned off.
  • I agree this option should be included.

Whoops, that was meant to be listed on the contest page all along.

The real question here also, is whether the "Allow multiple entries" should be changed to "Allow [1] entry per person" (where you can type in a number instead of 1)...

Or should that be, "Allow up to [~] entry(s) per person"?
    • I like that idea a lot. Sometimes I only want two entries per person and I've gotten more than three...

Kevin, some of us are still waiting with bated breath on this. Stating how many poems are allowed per poet would be great! Thank you.
