Depends on what the subject is. I hardly want happy poems if the subject is about death. Nor dark poems if about love or children.
I look for adherence to the rules given. If I want cinquains, I do not want to read a lot of haiku. I always look for grammar and punctuation. And, I require all entries to be signed, or they will be overlooked. -

It depends entirely on the topic. Even within a topic, it would depend on the judge.

I'm agreeing with most of the others.... it would depend on the topic/contest, and how well they meet the contest criteria.
Plus, I make the final decision on how the poem made me feel. I've read technically perfect poems that were not very good. It's the overall impression that sets it apart for me. -
It depends on the judge. Everybody has their own tastes.

I look for neither dark, nor happy poems. I look for poems that are real - that artfully express tha human condition.
